The Cure’s new record is no joke. I had middling expectations, but this thing might actually be as good as anything they’ve ever done. The question isn’t whether it’s among their best, the question is if it’s the best album they’ve done. It’s right up there with Disintegration and Wish. I’d say it’s better than the latter, but my debate of between it and the former. Worth every year of the 16 year wait.

I'm glad I didn't finalize a list yet. Kim Deal's solo album came out this week, and based on my first listens, it's a contender for top spot.

Top 3, in a year that , for me, wasn’t the strongest for new music, but a few albums stood out.

3. MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks

2. Vampire weekend - only God was above us

1. Cindy Lee - Diamond Jubilee

I will admit the run time is a little long in this one, but some of the most interesting music I’ve heard in awhile. Catchy, reverb(y), dreamy. My favorite album of the year.

Geordie Greep - The New Sound

As is typical of me, I downloaded this album like a month and a half ago and only got round to listening to it today.

It’s insanely good, phenomenal production and writing. Oscillates between smooth/latin jazz and noisier sections. Very artsy and avant-garde as you’d expect from a black midi member. Exceeded my expectations despite all the hype surrounding it.

Thucydides’s post reminded me that I need to finish that Cindy Lee album. I think I got through like half of it, what I heard was great.

Also excited to check out The Cure’s new album based on what The Marquis said.

Rolling Stone UK got it right

I considered this one for my list, and it's a good record don't get me wrong, but for me, it feels like an album that doesn't know what it is. I really struggled to enjoy it as a whole. The songs individually are another matter, but I hated the flow of the album, felt clunky.

I think that is totally intentional. An album called "Romance" with a crying heart as the cover art leads me to believe that Romance is clunky by nature.

Probably. It's weird though. The first 3 tracks are SO damn clunky. It's sounds like a compilation that starts off like a slow Bauhaus song, followed by something by The Streets then a regular pop tune by Oasis. Jarring to say the least. The consistency approves greatly after that, but I'll be honest, it is filled mostly with fantastic songs.
