Imagine being a Leafs fan.

You get out of work early after a long day. You drive in from Vaughan, crawling down the 401 at a snail’s pace while trying not to cry in front of your kids.

You pay $60 to park, drop 2 months of rent on upper bowl tickets for you and your kids, and drop another $75 on a lukewarm beer and some slices of overcooked pizza. This is your first in-person Leafs game in years, might as well splurge.

You sit down (finally) and by the end of the second, it’s already 4-0 Panthers. Matthews is twirling his mustache and looks like he’s about to cry. Marchand is leaning over the bench and chirping at your boys in blue.

Some guy in a Tkachuk jersey is dancing two rows down from you, pointing at his ring finger to rub it in your faces.

The old man next to you whispers, “Next year’s the one,” like it’s a prayer. But deep down, you both know: it ain’t happening in your lifetime.

AJ Greer scores and it’s now 5-0 in the 3rd. Your kids are crying and ask if they can go home. Might as well beat the traffic.

On your way down the escalators, the crowd goes silent again. 6-0. Bennett. The fan exodus escalates.

You’re in the parking garage, sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic waiting to leave. You turn on the radio. 6-1. All that money spent and you didn’t even see the Leafs score.

Enjoy the drive back to Vaughan. Hopefully the traffic clears up.
