Rumor: Bennett contract AAV could eclipse $10M?

If Peter Chiarelli gets rehired then I could see it. 8 mil a season is too much in my opinion. 40 pt average for his career, even with his physicality does not make him an 8 mil player in my opinion. Guys that play his style also almost always age very fast in their early 30s. I think he is definitely a guy that by 32-33, people will not want on their team at whatever overdone contract he gets. I like the edge he plays with, but he is a 40 pt player with great physicality to his game, but not a lot else. I also think he is the kind of guy that blends well with a really talented team like Florida, but if he goes somewhere not as deep the expectations for him to produce more pts will be higher.
Bennett is very physical in the playoffs, but he doesn't hit that much during the regular season. He picks his spot. He averages 154 hits per year during the regular season and pace at 344 during the playoffs. His regular season pace is less than Trocheck, Slaf, or Svechnikov. We're a far cry from Lucic or Wilson.

I like Bennett, but jesus fkin christ. I know hockey is the most popular sport in the world, of course they should get paid like ones... oh wait. With the cap rising every year what could possibly go wrong.

I think the Flames will offer 10million. I’m sure there will be other teams.

Kinda reminds me of Kadri. It seems like an overpay at the time, but it really isn’t.

I can definitely see some GM offering him 10mil a year if it's a short term deal, but long term? It ain't happening.

He likely comes in a hair under 9, especially if he leaves Florida and the media will swoon about him benevolently giving a discount

Elite money is 14+ now

10+ for Bennett is not that wild. You're paying for a playoff performer. There are great teams who would gladly overpay for that. The Leafs are definitely not the only team looking to break through in the playoffs. Dallas and Carolina have to be frustrated about how awesome they are right up until it matters most.

The whole point of everything is playoffs. As long as the team has a lot of players better than Bennett, he can ride that wave and give the group what it needs to win deep in the playoffs

It works especially if that team has bargains elsewhere. The team's total cap spending matters more than individual AAV

Perfect for Utah?
I'm not sure specifically what their cap situation is, but yeah - he feels like an amazing fit there. They could probably move on from Hayton and Crouse to create some room and gain some additional assets.

Cooley-Bennett-McBain-Stenlund down the middle would be a pretty terrific spine with a lot of different skillsets. Bennett and McBain would be just such a physical punch. Stenlund with additional size and pure defense and then Cooley is ready to take that next step to stardom. Or keep Hayton at 3C and just have McBain on the wing. McBain and Bennett would be fun together.

It’s also a fit because I think Utah’s owner is going to want to make a splash for year two and isn’t going to worry about splashing cash. Grabbing Bennett, who may very well be coming off two Cup wins…would certainly qualify. They are a franchise I think that will do something big this summer.

Bennett is the type of player who cashes in in this environment where teams have money to spend. He likely wouldn't live up to his contract, but pretty much every team in the League looks at him and says he brings elements we lack.

But if I'm him I leave a couple mil on the table to stay with the Panthers. They have such a good thing going he's not gonna find that anywhere else, and what better place to spend the rest of your career? They also believed in him and traded for him in the first place.

I know in the end it's leaving a lot of money on the table but for me it'd be worth it knowing I'll be comfortable.

But I'm not him so yeah.

This is the NHL's official Twitter account header page. Leon Drisitle and Sam freaking Bennett. Has anyone checked his shooting percentage in the playoffs ? Or are we all just going to pretend he's on the same level as Drisitle ? All 50 points of him.

What are his advanced stats ? Or are we setting those too for cliches? He's "a dawg" and everyone needs dawgs, here's 10 million over 8

But is "bennett" willing to go there? If he gets "paid"? why not?

Probably his only chance to cash in but I would make the argument that it is the Panthers system that made him this money and he will underperform his next deal.

JMHO

These are the kinds of things that are always said to justify a crazy contract. And they almost always turn out badly. He is 27 years old and could be out of the league in 5 years, nevermind being a playoff hero.

With his play in the post season the past few years, he may be worth it. I consistently see him as one of the best players on the ice when it matters the most.

Maybe term is the answer to the age issue. Even on the Panthers, Marchand is a perfect example about how a player like that can age well.

And yes some GMs will be desperate enough to sign him to 7 years knowing the last 3 will be brutal.

However I think you may be one of many fans who aren't calculating cap inflation. Even cap percentage doesn't show the whole story because the cap growth year to year is expected to be crazy too.

I think there would be more incentive from a team like Toronto doing it because you can bake a certain amount of the $10 million price tag (hopefully it’s not actually $10 million) into taking away a key playoff performer from a division rival.

If a team views themselves as a contender for the next 3-4 seasons but has a hole at 2C and money to spend, I can see Bennett getting 10. It will be rough at the end of a 7 year contract but would be worth it if a 2C puts a team over the top in the first half of the contract
