Rumor: Bennett contract AAV could eclipse $10M?

I would gladly welcome him onto my team… But I would be shocked if he gets 10M. I could see 7+ even 8+. But getting north of 9M that gets eyebrow raising unless it’s on very short term.

People are about to be shocked with where the Ufa prices go. Not just Bennett. Expect very mid UFAs to get $7+. Highly sought after ones, much more.

I like Bennett as a player, but anyone paying him above 8M is going to be kicking themselves within a year or two. That type of player rarely ages gracefully. I also wonder how much his production is a product of Florida and how they play in the playoffs.

Not to say he wouldn't be a good playoff guy regardless, but I kinda wonder if he'd be able to replicate that near PPG status elsewhere.

That would be the worst thing they could do. Replace a priceless 100 point player with the most overhyped 50 point player available.

Leafs have Matthews at 13. Signing Bennet at 10 would mean letting Tavares walk. Or would they do Tavares at 7 and go 30 mil AAV for three centres?

Playoff Bennett was a meme in Calgary as well. The guy know how to up the intensity in the playoffs. Was our best player one series but then somehow we put him back in the bottom 6 the next year.

Either takes a team friendly deal in Florida, or some team looks back at the team altering mistake they made singing him to far more than he's worth. Tale as old as time. But Florida might end up having to overpay as well.

Ultimately, nobody escapes the cap.

I can definitely see a 10 x 3 contract.

Lets say his goal is 60 million over 8 years
Thats a 7.5 million cap hit.
The first 3 years at 10 - back 5 years at 6 million

31 year old Bennett who plays Center with a cap at 113+ definitely could be worth 6 million.

I think a guy like Bennett, if he chooses, would buck that trend though this off-season. It’s just that people have a hard time wrapping their head around it.

I also think Bennett is far from a playoffs only guy. He’s a culture setter and a fantastic all-around center. He’s got traits which are valued and rare at a position that almost every team is dying to add somebody of his type to.

Yeah…he’s almost assuredly going to get overpaid if he wants to really grab his market value this summer. So is every UFA this summer. And the next summer. And so on. And the thing is - he’s going to get paid so much because his quality and style of play is valued and not easily obtained.

You get 50 points out of him during regular season

Normally that would be max 7M player, taking the cap going up into account

10M is crazy crazy money or anything close to it, it will just turn fans against him and he will be labeled the same way as Seabrook or Vlasic once they got paid
