Rumor: Bennett contract AAV could eclipse $10M?

I’m sure some teams would give him $10M+. Problem is, they wouldn’t be playoff teams.

I think he’ll end up signing for around $8-8.5M

There's 1 maybe 2 guys I would go over 10m this FA. And he ain't one of them.
Who would be?
Even if Marner and Ehlers get the big bucks, Bennett is likely the big fish at center. Teams will probably line up to try to get him, and the % of the salary cap (at 10%) wouldn't be much higher than some other 2C's.

I think Bennett hits FA at the Perfect time for him with the cap increasing. My guess was 7yx9m or 8x8 if he stays in FLA but he could get more in a bidding war of course. The Main issue is that if you sign him to a 10m deal, whereas he scores 50 points over 82 games, you may end up with a Tavares effect where your young players ask for the moon as soon as they outscore him.

Maybe a club like the Avs see Bennett (even at 10 AAV) as the ideal 2C behind Nate?

I don’t see how that could fit with their cap

Are they just trading Necas then or what’s the point of paying 3 forwards 10+ and not one of them being Rantanen?

2/3 over 10M players can’t be overpaid which at that point they would be

He's the type of player the Devils could use to help them in the playoffs.

Move Jack to LW and use Bennet as a 2C.

6.5 to 7.5

I don't see it happening though. 10 is overpayment.

Cap is going up a lot n a couple years it will push 110 mil.

Either takes a team friendly deal in Florida, or some team looks back at the team altering mistake they made singing him to far more than he's worth. Tale as old as time. But Florida might end up having to overpay as well.

Ultimately, nobody escapes the cap.

Is there a desperate team that needs C's and toughness, thats always willing to overpay with an owner that has no patience to build for the future?

Someone please hide Alvins and Rutherfords cell phones July 1

I really wouldn't be surprised. It'd be stupid and a massive overpayment...but we've got at least a dozen teams absolutely desperate for a 2C and at least trying to enter a contending window. There are also next to no viable Top-6 Center options available right now. Free Agency has practically nothing other than Bennett if he hits the market.

Beyond him, it's like...Brock Nelson (probably headed to Minnesota), and guys like Tavares (PJ Boy probably stays with Leafs), Granlund if you really view him as a quality Top-6C, and i guess Donato (if you're a total sucker and want to pin your fortunes to an outlier career year on a terrible team). That's pretty much it.

Trade market has practically nothing really available either. Maybe the Isles retool and make Barzal available? Possibly Zegras could be pried out of Anaheim if their front office don't think he's big enough or tough enough? Rumors that Rossi might be available...but that largely just cancels out because that'd almost certainly mean they're landing Brock Nelson taking him off the market. Everyone else is either keeping their Top-6 centers or actually looking to add more.

So yeah...due to the combination of extreme scarcity, extremely high demand (half the posts on this trade board are about trying to get a 2C to whichever team), and the big cap increase....i could absolutely see at least a couple teams throwing caution to the wind and just throwing a blank cheque at Sam Bennett like that. Probably a disaster, given how players who play that physical sort of game tend to age into constant nagging injuries and have their bodies break down. Also a player who has only ever really found success with one team that plays a pretty particular way which makes it extra risky. But he's a Top-6 Center who "plays the right way", he's got a real "winner" label to him, and if he does become available on the open market...it's gonna be a bidding war.

Well I guess one way a team can look at it is that some players get paid a HUGE amount cause they are awesome in regular season but suck in playoffs and never win… So why not pay a guy that’s very good in regular season and a absolute stud in playoffs and knows how to win.

It’s all about winning Cups

It’s a risky game tho cause if a team pays Bennett a huge amount and they win a Cup, the GM looks like the smartest man alive…. But if they never win a cup, then that GM will have a lot of questions to answer

I can't believe 18 yr old Sam Bennett is already 28. I'm so pissed we mismanaged his development. I was so happy Edmonton drafted Draisaitl instead of him. (dodged a bullet there huh, oof)
