Rumor: Bennett contract AAV could eclipse $10M?

Honest question. Who would you rather pay $9 million AAV for this summer…let’s split the difference on these fantasy 3 year deals which would be stupid for the player and the full boat 7 year deal (which IMO is likely but let’s be a little more prudent than GM’s):

$9 million AAV x 5 years

Sam Bennett or Nikolaj Ehlers?

I would not sign Ehlers if I were planning on contending. He's a guy you overpay to keep your rebuilding team afloat and then recoup assets on at a future deadline.

If I'm managing a contending team and somehow have that available space and need, I'm okay with overdoing it to land Bennett. But overdoing it is relative. I question how many contenders can justify THAT cost.

It’s not all about production, way two people are obsessed with points, would you rather have bennett or rossi?

One hits sixty the other hits 50.

Is he worth 10 million, probably not, but the salary cap is going up significantly, so in three years second line centres are gonna be making around 10 million.

Honestly, he’s probably worth around 8.5/9m right now, overpaying him by another million is not gonna do effect much in the long run

People aren’t ready for the new contract “norms”. $30M in cap increases in 3 years is going to result in an unprecedented amount of cap space for nearly every team in the league.

July 1 is going to be an absolute sh!t show on HFB with people complaining about billionaire owners spending money that they’ll never see on millionaire athletes they actively support (when it’s their team spending the money).

Get ready for non-stop outrage followed by homer cope when it’s their club doling out the free market rate contracts and they suddenly become enlightened to the new financial realities of the league, for better or worse.

I don't see why the Sharks wouldn't throw that kind of number at Bennett if he's willing to keep it to four years. I'm sure a few teams would also be willing to do that. I don't think that number is an outlandish possibility but it's going to be either that on a shorter deal or 7 years at like 8 or 9 million.
Not sure why the sharks would go after Bennett. Sharks are not competing for a cup for at least another 5 years or more. Bennett value is his playoff play.

Good conversation going on here

Take Bennett off of Florida and put him with a pair of league average 2nd line wingers. What does his production look like? There’s no conversation to be had. He’s a really versatile 2C and definitely brings a playoff element, but there is no conversation to be had at $10M.

That same team ready to offer Bennett, is willing to overpay Ekblad as well. They just have to find someone to take Zibanejad (he’ll also waive to), buyout Krieder, and trade K’Andre Miller for futures.

The sweetener for taking Zibanejad’s 5 years, might be the craziest we’ve ever seen. The problem for the Rangers is, they can’t do the things they want to, without him no longer being there, and he’s not going to accept a trade without being happy with the fit. Speculation is, he’s only approved 1-2 teams. So to do what they’d like to do, it’s gonna hurt. That’s regardless of getting a Bennett and/or Ekblad.

I don't think his value is just his playoff play. He helps create an identity that is good for any club.
True, with that said, going from Florida to California tax situation and a cup contender to a non cup contender is a big pill to swallow and overpayment would be necessary if im Bennett to go to the sharks

You’re mixing taxes and level of club. Pick one.

Sam Bennet never got past 50 pts and in the playoffs he has like 50 pts in 80 games untill this year. Giving him 10m is beyond idiotic. Maybe if he was a constant PPG player in the playoffs you could give him 8-9/year.
