Rumor: Bennett contract AAV could eclipse $10M?

Kevin Hayes got 7.15 in the summer of 2019 under and 81.5 million dollar cap. Cap adjusted that's 8.4....
4 playoff goals across 40 games, career high 53 points.

Maybe it's not Bennett this off-season, but 2C's with unique skillsets/ value adds getting 10 is only a matter of time, life is different under a cap that's 95m and rising than one that's been flat for several years.

It would be such a Sweeney move to sign him to that for no reason other than that he bodied the Bruins in the last few playoffs, except he won't bring that during the life of his contract because he's older, has more mileage, and power forwards never age well at all. We'd be saddled with another Belesky (who Sweeney overpaid after one decent playoff run and never produced shit otherwise).

Kind of a catch-22. You sign this guy because he's money in the playoffs. But if you sign him to this money you suddenly don't have the room to build a Cup contender. So unless he signs with an up and coming team with some nice contracts, it's likely this will only be a win for Bennett.

Can't see him signing for a contender that's not in a tax-exempt state

Sam Bennett is possibly the best role player in the league. But he's not the guy you pay 10M to unless you have money and capspace to burn, like Chicago, Anahiem, etc. I suspect he will have to decide between a huge payday from one of those teams, or a smaller payday on a more competitive team (like staying in Florida).

PV knowing his ass is on the line to make the playoffs this year:

I think he takes 7 - 7.5 to stay in Florida, personally. Idk the exact numbers, maybe someone could correct me but 7-7.5 in a tax free state has gotta be almost equivalent to signing for 9-10 in a non tax free state or Canada.

I also think Florida keeps Ekblad in the same price range, and let Marchand walk.

Habs are paying Laine $8.7MM to be a PP specialist and playoff ghost, $10MM is a bit rich for Sam but not my money and we desperately need a 2C, trade prices are outrageous and with Hage coming up they can swap spots in a few years with Bennett dropping down to 3C.

Nhl gms love to overpay players like this. He will get a ridiculous contract. He's been good for fl and was effective in Calgary too. Not overly productive player but effective in the playoffs. Could be worth it for a team that's almost there.
