Rumor: Bennett contract AAV could eclipse $10M?

Nobody adjacent to even the worst management in the league would say to E.J. Hradek what they'd pay a specific free agent while the dude is still under contract and playing hockey.

Which means the only potential source here is the player's agent. The same way it's been for basically every "story" like this for years. Not news, not a scoop, just detritus.

If someone hands him 10+ million it has to be only for a few years.

Which honestly if your team has cap space and then he signs a sweet heart deal a few years later could really work out for him and the team.

That's the kind of contract a GM gives you when he knows he's being canned shortly. Spiteful future planning.

I could see Toronto offering him 10M as a replacement for Marner.

Logic would be to replace one of the biggest playoff chokers with one of the most "clutch" players in the league.

Tavares could be shifted down to 3C where he'd succeed as he gets older.

The only way this happens is if the Leafs step up to overpay Bennett. Because no other team or GM is that stupid. Except maybe the Avs....
Does Brad Treliving being the guy that traded Bennett out of Calgary make the Leafs more or less likely to acquire him as a UFA?

I seriously don't think it happens, but oh how the tables would turn on Brad Treliving, the guy who traded him out of Calgary for peanuts is the one to offer him a 10 million dollar yearly salary.

Love how people don’t think this could happen. Look at the bad contracts that have been handed out over the years. Like the Clarkson contract, for example. GMs make stupid decisions all the time.

To be fair to Treliving, two 2nd round picks was a solid return for a guy who was stagnating and couldn't even hit 30 points for 5 straight years.

I think it more likely that Bennett wouldn't sign with a team that would pay him that much. UFAs don't always take the most money, they're looking for a balance.

Even with the rising cap, players want to win and paying Bennett that much makes it almost impossible. He'd probably take 7-9 mil on a team he thinks can compete with him.

With the cap going up and the shortage of 2C’s in the league, I wouldn’t be surprised if 8-10 million a year is the new going rate for them

This i agree with. The only viable source of actual information could be the agent which immediately tarnishes the message.

Fans are eager to take on any info and that why this stupid click bait environment thrives.

Sir Sam will get paid what a player of his impact is worth but this isn’t the message that informs us other than the bait the agent wanted out there.
