A long time ago, before the Sabres went through with the tank, there were reports in Buffalo that they wanted to sign Shane Doan in free agency, It was right after Pegula took over as owner and he was throwing money around to players like Leino and Ehrhoff. The needed leadership and Doan was the target. The AAV was reported as $7.5M.

The Sabres offered that to Doan because they knew what he provided was exactly what the Sabres needed. Fast forward to now, and Bennett is exactly what the Sabres need right now. I wouldn't be surprised if that type of contract was offered by the Sabres.

Bennett seems like one of those players that would be a great add for a contender that might just need that extra bit of bite to their top six. But he seems like a disaster signing for a team that's not a contender and blows all that money on him.
