I have been travelling to OHL venues for over 15 years. One of my guilty pleasures was getting Alexanders Keiths at the Duty Free on my way back to Michigan. If I felt like treating myself, I would get a draft at the game. It was usually a dollar more than the other beers offered. It was also my go-to beverage at a East Side Mario's (where I first discovered it).

I have noticed now that Alexander Keiths is no longer available where I have been going, neither on tap nor in cans. It also wasn't at the East Side Mario's in two different cities (Brantford and Windsor) in the last year.

After some more reflection, taps are not as prevalent at sporting venues in general in the states. And I much prefer a draft beer than a bottle or can, so I just don't get beer anymore.

I don't expect this to be a long thread. I am just curious if there is a reason why Alexander Keith's has gone into the shadows when it used to be something I looked forward to when I would visit Ontario.

Keiths is a Labatt’s product so it is not like it is a Micro Brew or anything like that. It is a very popular beer but like any other popular beer, they get replaced by other popular beers as they emerge. It is not at the level of Bud and Bud Lt for popularity and volume sales for Labatt but it is a pretty highly placed seller. Odds are pretty good that either the bar or Hockey rink went to another featured product from the Labatt lineup or they signed a contract with Molson’s.

See the Labatt lineup here.

While the self-serve grab and go bottles are becoming more prevalent at arenas, I haven't noticed a drop off in draft beer stateside. I always drink draft beer at the Dow and I recently went to a Wings game at Little Caesars and they not only had draft beer but they have multiple bars that are accessible from the concourse. Comerica Park had lots of draft beer and even if you go to the Loons, they have lots of options of draft beer especially regional.

Real IPAs got more popular and everyone figured out Alexander Keith's despite its name is the farthest thing from an IPA

Plenty of draft options in Erie.

Technically "real India pale ales" were more like Keith's as they were initially brewed in the 1700-1800's with a bit more hops to allow them to stay fresh on the journey from the uk to india. The more modern IPA's are associated with microbreweries where they tend to focus more on the hops as part of the true brewing process as opposed to it being a preservative like additive. Keith's has been around since 1820, when IPA was different than the 1980's onward IPA

Alexander Keith's IPA as a beer hasn't run through since 1820, it's marketing. The hops historically were added at the end as a preservative like you say but that resulted in a much more bitter beer. There is hardly a hop to be found in Keith's "IPA", let alone enough hop content to actually work as a preservative for a long journey. It's brewed with a lager yeast and their own website calls it a blonde Ale.

There are real ales that exist in England and elsewhere in Europe that have actually been consistently brewed going back hundreds of years but they're nothing like Keith's "IPA" (and yes nothing like most micro breweries modern IPAs either).

The MLB ballparks between Miami and Houston seemed to all have gone to the self-serve with an attendant to just check ID and confirm you paid. I used to walk all around the concourse when traveling to games to find one local brewery to sample, or at least something I could not get at home. And I certainly would try to find beer on draft (draught?).

I may have skewed my perspective of draft beer options because of the college football stadiums I have attended in more recent years. Likely, those stadium concessions stands were not originally designed for alcohol sales (keg storage, line routing, etc.), hence they have cans only. But I will say the arena in Grand Rapids has only four beers on tap (Big Brand, Big Brand Light, Second Big Brand Light, and something else) at multiple concessions around the concourse. Similarly, Capital One Arena in DC was the same way at least if I remember right.

You are correct about the Loons. Actually, the Whitecaps and Lugnuts both have a craft beer taps at some point going around those ballparks.
