Prospect Info: Bedard Topic 2

To go from a 27 goal pace to 23 goal pace with roster improvement is disappointing anyway you slice it.

Adam Gaudette literally has as many goals as Bedard which is kind of depressing to think about. While being in a 16 way tie for the 102nd place in goals scored.

A 27 goal pace last year, isn't close? Lol

If he didn’t get injured do you really think he keeps that pace up as an 18 year old rookie?

I don’t.

He definitely would have faded and probably pretty hard. As he should have, 18 year olds aren’t built to play 82 NHL games.

You know, I compared him to Kane after he was drafted, and never considered him to be of the Crosby/McDavid level. I guess I'm just disappointed that he hasn't scored more goals. I thought he was a lock for 30 as a rookie, and he hasn't come close to scoring 30 in his first two seasons.
My God man, he literally has no one to get him the puck. He is surrounded with no talent.

You have a weird way of s'ing tfu.

Right now Bedard is a winger, not a center. Should be playing wing. Also, currently Nazar is a better player, up and down the ice.

Also, his shot is the same “pull it in and shoot” every time. Have to believe that every goalie is looking for it, as well as the defender. Would be nice to see him just fling it without the pull drag move every time he shoots. Highly predictable. Mix it up a bit. Haven’t seen that though.

He's putting up the same type of #'s as Patrick Kane(Hawks legend, all-time elite HOF player) at the same age on a far worse team.

Knowing this.....unless you're worried that he's not going to be as good as Gretzky/Mario/McDavid/Crosby("generational" level)....then what is there to worry about? Visible frustration? Really?

IMO it comes off like some of you just want to make stuff up to be worried about. He's been much better since earlier in the season and is coming along just fine in general. Wondering nonsense like "well what if he's like Svech and never cracks 70 pts" gets you nowhere. Its silly.
90% or more of the frustration I see from him is from him not getting a lot of calls when he should and getting penalties called on him when they are soft as warm butter.

Last 5GP only 1a and -7= pretty bad..
However in light of Connor McDavid relatively poor (for him) last 5GP = 1g 3a ONLY and ALSO -7 and getting
slammed and heckled by some Edmonton fans for this slacking off, you can say that even superstars go through sone bad stress of goes..
But I do not think it is acceptable that aside from 1 of his last 5GP where he generated 5 shotsvon goal that he has only a combined 4 shots ongoal inthebither 4 games during this stretch...
8 shog total for a 15 period stretch is just unacceptable for any nhl player playing on his team's top line and with top PP mInstead.

So just because McDavidcnot upto his high standards in his lastc5GP ,it does notcexcuse Bedard's deep check-out in aisle 98..

I came across a interesting stat but di not understand what it means...

The stat is : Created Goals-actual goals expected ...

Apparently Mitch Marner is #1in this stat and Connor Bedard is #51 but somehow a few spots ahead of Austin Mathews?

But what does this stat mean?

That a player shoots or passes and a goal is scored by him or his teammates that wss not expected to go in???

Does this indicate deflection goals? Longer range goals resulting?

I do not understand if this category is valuable to have leaders in or not that important an ability.

at this rate you have almost a 2 year sample size of him at center in the nhl and his offensive production is not elite, move him to the wing, we didn't draft him to be nico hischier

What does Nico Hischier have to do with Bedard?!?

Is Nico Hischier the only type of center you can have in the NHL? There are more than one type of 1C in this league. You don't have to be a lower end 2-way 1C or be forced to become a winger.

Bedard has had more points and a higher PPG in each of his first two seasons in the NHL. Bedard was also the best player, offensively, these two seasons here; while Hischier was maybe the best player on his team in his sophomore year, but was easily behind Taylor Hall in his rookie season.

Bedard is much more similar to the other recent 1st overall Devil, Jack Hughes, except Connor's first two seasons have been considerably better. Should Hughes have been moved to wing?

He hasn’t looked good for a stretch. And for those complaining he has no linemates - his linemates look better than him these days. Nazar and Slaggert are doing more than him.

I thought his D was a little better last night. my bigger concern is I thought he was a better skater. he looked like he was laboring to keep up. IE you can tell when guys are skating fast naturally and easy and when guys are trying to muscle up or effort up more speed. which doesn't really happen

His skating is 100% the reason he doesn't generate more offense than he already does and the reason I feel like he'll end up at wing long term. Skating is weird, some guys can make huge strides and other guys seem like they can put every offseason into getting better and they barely do.

He's capable of playing center, mentally, and his positioning has improved there a lot, but I really hope he can find an extra gear skating wise.

Bedard playing very poorly last 7GP ...only1a -8...not generating chances either forvhomself or for kinemates...esoecialky 5x5 ...Hawks Pp has been great but he is not on onlast 2 touches before the finisher scores..
It is perplexing how ineffective he has been these games..

I agree with an above post that he looks slow in his skating.. Also just does notcseem to "connect" with linemates...like hevis off on 1 plane of existence and they inanither.

For lsst season and this to date the criticism of the Hawks iscthat they failed Bedard by nit giving hom competent linemates who can help him succeed..
But at sone point the criticism needs to shift the question to why id he nit lifting linemates to be effective?

Is it not the point when you draft a guy#1that he must elecate his linemates to production?
OR even if theycare so bad that cannot hapoen at least the star pitential of a #1 overall shoukdvtranslatecto hom creating his own chancescandxscoringbforvhimself.

Weare getting neither many self scoring chances nor setups to his wingers lately.
This is not just a bad luck /creating danger but failing to finish story...but rather an eye test showing dis-engagement and inability to make a difference.orceven look dangerous anymore.

Do not know if this is "checked out Bedard" or fizzled Bedard who cannot seem to do much with the puck or even get to open positions to receive the puck anymore..for certain he looks "out ofvtge okay" and if he touches the puck (5x5( it does nit stay ling on his possessions defenders lean on him..shove him down, take oucksxaway ..His shots when he even gets them off look easy to handle and stop by opps goalies..he looks so "ordinary " and becone a no dNger threat.

So is this just checked out Bedard slumping mentally or is the eye testof slower that expected skating causing his ineffective/nothingburger play.

This version cannot be the see kid we drafted#1..regression to nothing?

So the put him with Nazar and Slaggert last night..They were the worst Hawks line in terms of production and possession.
For sone reDonBrdard is not able to jell with anyone on the ice with him..

This downturn in Bedard's pkay is very concerning.

Perhaps there is an injury he isvpjaying through that is slowing him down..ifvso our vaunted media covering g tge Hawks has not exposed anything on that .
if not a physical problem, then sonething mentally wrong and it is affecting his level of play?
.Bottom line = he seems dis-ebgGed from what the rest of te team is doing..that is unacceptable.

I'm not too concerned.
He's clearly tired but also learning to play the center position in the NHL.

Look at the 1st goal last night (Martinez.)
Bedard gets to the front of the net, draws both defenders to him, and screens the goalie.
Otherwise it's an easy save. He gets no assist on the goal but so what? He made the right play.

Bedard’s issue is a lack of agility. He turns like a 747 on ice. I’d be shocked if we saw any significant improvement in his skating in that regard. It makes the top speed of his being on the high end a misleading number.

Funny how Bedard’s skating went from terrific and above average to the thing that’s holding him back.

On a positive note, the play where he entered the O zone, did a 360 scan of the ice while still moving toward, and then flicked a backhand to a trailer (Bert?) was pretty crazy. Kid always has his head up.

His skating looks different to me lately. Any chance he might be working on it mid season or is that strictly an off season thing?

He’s got some heavy feet. It’s really surprising honestly. Guys with his stocky build and height are usually like bulldogs on the ice like Nazar, Trochek, Point, T Johnson in his prime. Explosive and heavy on the puck. Bedard is the opposite. I almost wonder if he could benefit from losing some weight in the offseason. He seems even less agile than when he came into the leavue

If I had one gripe with Bedard's offensive game it would be this...

He needs to get his shot off quicker. During yesterday's game, in the 1st period there was a turnover and Bedard got the puck in the slot. He was all alone. He took a stride or 2 to get into a better scoring position. He let a half toe drag shot go and the goalie saved it.

He should have left that toe drag in Junior. It doesn't work in the NHL now a days. Matthews brought it in when he was a rookie but everyone has adjusted to it.

I hate to tell Bedard how to score goals because what the hell do I know. But I just want to see the puck on his stick and off his stick as soon as possible. Don't give the goalie a chance to get into position, set and ready for your shot.

He's been bad for a few weeks now. Not sure if it's him being tired (doesn't sound like he rested any during the break), or is nursing an injury, or if he's upset over the Jones situation (which Pat Boyle confirmed did rub some players here the wrong way). Whatever it is, it'd obviously be nice if he can snap out of it.

His skating isn't great, but it's fine. He's generally been the best, or among the best, here in the transition game. He's not a speedster like Jack Hughes is. He's a guy that often pulls up at the blue line and waits to hit a rushing teammate with a pass, similar to what Kane was known to do a lot here.

His speed won't hold him back from being an elite player. It didn't for Kane, or Kucherov, or Kaprizov. All of them are wingers and maybe that's where he winds up long term. I've personally been an advocate for him at center and felt that he's done well there at points this season.

Don't think him playing center or his overall skating is what's causing these issues the past few weeks, though. It hasn't been an issue before. Just gotta be patient with him and remember that he's a 19yo kid. I think most, though certainly not all, of us here know and have seen what he's capable of, so we can give him the benefit of the doubt a little bit. He'll be fine, even though he's not fine right now.
