I've heard quite a few talking heads say that Beck had to be sent down to be eligible to play for the Rocket in the playoffs. I'm guessing this is why he was sent down.

I don't think that's true. Him and Dobes were sent down/paper traded for that reason

No. Just on paper. And we're passed that date anyway. Beck and Dobes were sent down on a paper transaction so are eligible for the AHL playoffs.
Yep they need to be. The players on this team have to figure things out....ain't no help coming.

This year's team is a Bergevin team. Maybe they squeak in. But it would be a Cinderella story if they advance deep into the playoffs. I'm still more looking forward to the future. Deep down I think it would be better to finish top 5 again and add another slaf/Demidov/Reinbacher piece, plus have gotten 1sts and 2nds at the deadline to help put together a package for a real 2c in the offseason. Would have been better to live to fight another day, imo.

I'm guessing Laine will either be in Pez's spot or MSL is trying Gally with Newie and Roy in practice, but Laine will be there during the game. We'll see...

That lineup is ugly from line 2 onwards. I don't see much of an NHL future for Roy anymore.

I simply mean that the Canadiens are moving into phase two of the rebuild. Next year we're going to have RB, Demidov, Beck joining and we'll be playing for the postseason. I suspect you'll see a guy like Mailloux dealt off because we're going to want to get better faster.
Roy is an interesting case. We'll definitely be adding another center on the 2nd so that means the top six is probably full. Where does he go? Newhook is probably moving down to the 3rd line. So that means Evans, Heineman and Newhook.
I just don't see where Roy slots in. Only way it happens is if there's an injury or if we decide to move on from Laine, Newhook or somebody else.
So... yeah, this audition is pretty important to him. I wanted him to have the full year here specifically because of this reason. I wanted to see what he could do and make a decision from there. I figured he'd probably put up similar numbers to what Heineman was doing before he got hurt. Be in the running for the Calder in the top ten (not up with Cellebrini/Hutson.) But it didn't work out that way. Some of it is his fault but we were such a shitshow to start the year it's hard to see how he could be successful. Then when we started winning we were going to call him up and he got hurt.
So now we're here. Hopefully he shows something. He's not a Gallagher/Heineman type player. He's not going to go around hitting people. He's a cerebral offensive player who needs opportunity to score. He's going to be playing with Newhook and Laine. Not exactly murderer's row right now.
I don't know. I hope he can show something. We'll see.

Curious to know your take on Roy. Is he the one they should have called up?
I’ve suggested someone like Laurent Dauphin, a centre with NHL experience who is doing well in Laval and leaving the kids down with Vincent to perfect their game.

I definitely support the decision to call Roy up. Ultimately the role of Laval is to develop NHL players and he has a legitimate chance of achieving that goal. He will be back in Laval for their playoff run so going up to the big club provides the opportunity to boost his confidence and raise his overall level of play. I think calling up Dauphin would be a tough call with Roy playing so well right now.
Both options are reasonable, but I think they need to give Roy another opportunity that he has earned and likely expected. Dauphin is not a part of the future and although he might play well, he looked over matched in previous NHL call ups . Dauphin is average or below average in every facet of the game at the NHL level. Roy has some traits that may play out to be above average and he needs to learn how to use them in the NHL. These call ups are often a great opportunity for young players to re calibrate their tool box as there are things that work at the AHL level that do not work in the NHL and the only way for him to discover this is by trial and error at the NHL level.
Management are taking this opportunity to get a better read on Joshua as well as allowing him to try and translate what he has learned in the AHL to the NHL and learn things that he will not learn against lesser opponents.
Just my opinion as Dauphin could very well have proven to be a more effective call up.

I keep hearing these arguments but if they truly wanted to make the playoffs, they would’ve picked up veteran depth. If you’re fighting for a spot, you don’t fill holes with Beck and Roy to get “a look at them” . It’s not the time.
I mentioned as well that Dauphin would have been the better choice. He’s not part of the future, but if you’re watching Laval games, he’s probably the most deserving forward for a call up. Regardless, I’d rather he help Laval anyway. The Habs are sunk.
I mean, Roy has played 4 nhl games this season, Beck has played 12, Mailloux has played 7.
All three players were only called up due to injuries, which is pretty much the standard procedure of all hockey clubs.
If a combined 23 nhl games between three players is "forcing" their way to the nhl, then it's a pretty loose definition.

Dauphin doesn't have an NHL contract just an AHLC. He would have needed to be signed to a one year NHL contract for 2024-2025 then put on waivers before the Trade Deadline. Montreal could have lost him to a team like Philadelphia, SJS or Chicago who just want players to fill out the roster to end the season then Laval loses him.
It wasn't worth the risk.

You also need to bring players up who seem close so they get a feel for the NHL game and understand where their games are versus actual NHL players. You can't learn everything in AHL. Just practicing with NHL players is helpful.
It's works as both motivation and experience.

One guy who would have deserve it was Farrell. One guy who will never be able to succeed in the NHL is Farrell. So at one point, it's not always who deserves it. It's who can somehow be the best at making up for us not moving at the deadline....
