He's 18 years old. He can't play in the AHL until after next season.

That is right, IIRC a prospect has to be 19 and turning 20 on or before Dec 31st of the current season to play in the AHL. Mostly just the late after sept 15th birthdays, Akey has a February birth day.

Of late the Oilers 1st round picks aside from Broberg and Jesse are late birthday’s.
