Beating A Dead Horse Thread: 3 on 3 in overtime during the playoffs

Why go after the poster for posing this question. It was used to decide a world championship and you never know what the NHL will do to attract viewers in the sunbelt!

It’s also a good idea to try to remember that there are (hopefully) a lot of young NHL fans who only know this format at this point.

Us old hockey heads can remember but not everyone who is following the league now was following back then

I saw that exciting game between the USA and Finland where it went to 3 on 3 in overtime.

Do you think having 3 on 3 OT during the NHL playoffs make it more exciting?
Wait, you thought the 3on3 overtime between USA and Finland was exciting? How?

We have to remember that 3 on 3 IS a gimmick. The league knows this. These changes were made to eliminate ties

Wrong. The shootout was introduced to eliminate ties. Then they introduced 3v3 to try to get more games decided without having to go to the shootout. Which, ironically, in a roundabout way is the NHL admitting that shootouts are a lame gimmick. Their solution was just another gimmick.

In fairness, there is no non gimmicky way to solve the problem if the NHL insists on not having ties.

What I don't understand is people who want to get rid of the loser point while keeping the 3-on-3 overtime format. That's not real hockey but I can stomach it in the regular season. But I also don't mind shootouts as much as some people do.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Also, NO!

That's a big NO. I don't know why so many people want to change the greatest overtime in sports. 5v5, sudden death, unlimited 20 minute periods of OT--there's nothing like it!

Exactly.
And I still think its better than a shootout, which the biggest sports event in the world has.
Soccer shootouts are the same as a hockey shootout. Yes, they’re now ingrained in the sport even to the point of a World Cup final game.

These gimmicks are still a joke from a sporting point of view. I’d call it a bastardization of a great game that’s not broken.

3 on 3 is a gimmick that was brought about to try and avoid an even worse gimmick called the shootout. I don't like either in the regular season, but I do understand why the NHL does it. They basically don't want regular season games going all night, and they don't like ties, so we are left with gimmicks.

As for the playoffs, I don't think there is anything is wrong with the current way playoff games are decided. And I don't believe even Bettman would be stupid enough to change what we currently have.
