In an ideal world, a set of hirings should line up for a new GM to hire a new coach, for them to draft a new QB, and for the coach to hire his own assistants, all in one offseason. But the Bears can't time anything right, be that for Williams, Fields, or Trubisky.

Williams is our guy, I actually do have confidence that he can excel if given a good coordinator and protection, and his skill sets are there that I think he'd be an attractive QB to coach for an incoming hire.

But I'm worried that any coach worth their salt would look at the Bears as a place where if anything didn't go to plan then the end result would be Poles getting fired or Poles getting desperate. And neither are good options for a coach to be worried about a possible early hot seat. Either they'd be a sacrificial lamb or they'd be a random holdover that a new GM has no attachment to.

And let's be honest, the Bears will Bear it up and mandate that any new coach needs to retain a coordinator or a position coach or two for inexplicable reasons.

No desirable coach is going to sign up for a likely one-year opportunity.

Brisker's concussions and Stevenson's mental implosion this season leaves the team in an awkward position for the draft. The secondary was supposed to be set. Instead, 2 spots might need to be filled in the offseason with at least potential starters, if not clear starters, in addition to filling the glaring holes on the O-line and D-line.

In a vacuum Poles has done “enough” to not get fired. But keeping Flus alone is enough to be fired. Writing was on the wall last year. That doesn’t even get into the history of this organization.

I really don’t want to struggle to attract a great HC because the GM might be on the hot seat.

Also look I like what I’ve seen from Thomas Brown, both on the field and personality wise. But I’m not so sure about keeping him. He would have to be the HC.

I worry a lot about Smith's ability to play in a system that isn't soft zone. I suppose we'll find out, but I think he understands zone defense really well, but he just straight loses when he's against man.

To me, he feels more safety-esque with his size and lack of speed (even with the missed tackle yesterday). Of course, if he could play safety, that would still fill a hole.

Although him even being available for our pick might be a stretch. I'd like to see them go for a top end talent on the line vs signing guys and 2nd and 3rd rounders.

But if you do that then one of your second rounders needs to be on the defensive line, if not both. There really aren't any big impact defensive lineman you can bring in via free agency.

Then go sign Jevon Holland from Miami to replace Brisker.

That's what I would try and do, at least. Still likely have money to replace the Stevenson/Smith spot as well.

The Brisker thing isn’t being talked about enough. It’s a really big deal for this D

We all know of Black Monday. Hopefully we will have a proper Black Friday with cheap Amazon antennas for Hawks games, brawls at Walmart over $60 LED tvs and Flus being fired

I don't think Banks is an OT in the NFL. I honestly think the tackles next season may still be B. Jones and Wright. If you go by Brugler's top 50, which generally is good, the top 3 tackles in the draft are Campbell (viewed as a guard by some teams), Banks (viewed as a guard by many teams), and Simmons (injured).

Brugler on Campbell:

Now in his third season as the Tigers’ left tackle, Campbell is a very natural blocker due to timing and balance through engagement. His lack of ideal length will be an issue for some teams (scouts believe his arms will measure right around 33 inches at the combine). I’m keeping him at tackle until he shows he can’t do it — but even if he moves to the interior, Campbell is still the best offensive lineman in this draft.

Brugler on Banks:

Whether you like him best at tackle or guard (NFL teams are split), Banks is a quality offensive lineman because of his ability to maintain leverage and create force through his body mechanics. He spends too much time on the ground, but the tools are there for him to become an immediate NFL starter.

Now, every year has some Wright-esque riser who has played at a smaller program that doesn't win many games that isn't much reported on until around senior bowl time, so there is that.

But even with Jones's clear deficiencies, the biggest issue on the line is the interior. If they can get Trey Smith in FA, someone like Kelvin Banks or Tyler Booker out of Alabama (who might be in the range for the 2nd round pick), and the best player who isn't playing center in college but could do it in the NFL (like Graham Barton last season), that's at least something to work with. It would be a crazy young line, but it at least could be good in the future. Replace the LT in a deeper tackle draft.

Jenkins is also still playable on guard, but he's obviously injured ALL THE TIME.

You're right that CB2 and SS are probably possible to replace for relatively cheap and still get decent players. Loads of teams also get good safeties late in the draft.

So:

QB - fine
WR - fine (maybe get a late round WR in there)
TE - fine (Everett is trash, but Kmet is really good)
OT - needs new blood on LT at some point, but not necessarily this year. OT class is bad.
OG - needs two new players if we assume Jenkins isn't being re-signed. OG class isn't super strong, but gets much stronger if you think Campbell and Banks are guards.
C - needs a new player, but this center class is BAD.
RB - fine. RB class is good, so they might swing at something, but I doubt it.

DT - needs depth, but Dexter and Billings is probably fine for the time being. DT class is good.
DE - needs a difference maker on the other side of Sweat. This is a deep DE class.
LB - overpaid but fine.
CB - need a new #2, unless someone miraculously fixes Stevenson, or Smith is better than I think he is.
S - need a new SS, and someone to replace Byard when his age rears its head.

I really do think the first three picks probably need to go OL/DL, OL/DL, OL/DL. I do think 2 of those need to be OL, but I'm not going to flip a table if they opt for a DE first, since the way things are going the two 2nd rounders are going to be in the top 45 picks.

Sometimes when someone you don't like (whether it be personally or in a position of power), it's important that when someone claims he said or did something that really seems too perfect for your narrative, you go back and verify it.

So, I went to double check, and can confirm that he did indeed say that he threw the challenge flag because it was an explosive play, not because of anything that indicated that Addison was out.

Maybe there's a reason he's batting under 20% on challenges.

Not like that extra timeout could have come in handy in case there was some kind of miscommunication between the offense, kicking team, and offensive coordinator at an important point in the game.

There's obviously more reasoning behind his decision than merely because it was a big gain. I'd have to see it again, but on the re-play I thought Edwards(?) may have been pointing to where Addison stepped out.
Aside from that, the shitty tackle attempt by the 3rd string safety is inexcusable. Not sure if that effort was worse than Stevenson on the Jones run tho. Pathetic.
