Post-Game Talk: Be still my Oily heart

You could be right about the effect of overtime.

That first period though...they could have easily been down 4 - 0. They were giving up odd man rush after odd man rush...turning the puck over time and time again. Ugly to watch.

How hard is it for a championship caliber team to actually start playing at the opening faceoff?
I just dont understand why this team hasnt learned that lesson yet.

They really do need a 60 minute game starting in game 5.
Maybe it looked worse on TV but in person I thought the first period shot count flattered the kings. Which natural stat trick agrees with me on that too. We out chances then and had more high danger chances.
It seemed like almost all of their shots were mostly perimeter or came off shaky line changes.
The early penalty was rough and didn’t help frame things.
Second period was bad though. We didn’t get many chances and all our possession was kept to the outside.

The first imho and analytically was deceptive. Yeah they were out shot but LA blocked a ton of shots. I think going into the 3rd LA had 16 more blocked shots than us, which definitely affected the shot count.

Going into the third chances were 19-18 LA and high danger were 9-6 LA.

Only a couple actually rough odd man chances. I don’t think they played bad defensively, our offence is what struggled in the first 2 periods.

A small reason our start was so bad was the line combos. The Drai, Pod, Arvy line just isn't it.

Leon Mcdavid Perry
Kane Nuge Hyman
Frederic Henrique Brown

^^^ Seems to be the answer. Watch Knobs break it up.

Klingberg played 10 minutes in overtime wow

While his speed is gone, his calmness and poise with the puck on his stick can not be overstated.

He has a calming effect back there because he always gives people the puck in a good spot, and puts it on their tape.

Might just end up being a beastly signing.

Remember, when we first saw him he was coming off a LONG layoff. It looks like he's back to game speed.

Yes, LAK shot everything on Net because they know our goalies are ass (I was impressed with Calvin, 2 bad goals though)

Our first two periods were bad because the Line combos were ass. Nuge and Mcdavid is meh and the Drai line with Arvy is even worse

You are partially right on the first part. The only goal I thought was bad was the first one other than that they were fine. Arvy made another bad falling down turnover and his ice time was basically cut from then on.

The forward combos for sure and again, the moment Knoblauch breaks up Nurse and Bouchard everything cleaned up giveaway wise.

Let's hope they keep the forward combos the same! There needs to be more talk about this....

I thought the breakaway goal wasn't great, but i'll admit I don't know much about goalies and have never worked with that position.

Even though i'm a Leafs fan I do support you guys as i'd like to see my folks celebrate one more cup win before their times up. I've left the room two games in a row now down 1 goal in game 3 and 2 in game 4 and sat out on the deck and didnt come in until i got score updates when they won in game 3 and stayed outside for the OT goal last night.

You're welcome. As long as I dont watch you've got this it seems. Its not that nice out when the sun goes down if you could deliver a bottle of Forty Creek, that would be great.

We aren't winning shit with this defense.

Cripes.. that was ugly

Couldnt disagree with the bolded more. The score in the first period (and half of the 2nd) flattered the Oilers big time.
I am not sure how you could have missed the 5 or 6 odd man rushes the Kings had.
Later on at least Connor and RNH made a couple of solid back checking plays but the puck management was really poor.
In terms of the HDSC stats...they are bogus. You pretty much have to do your own evaluation and by my eye the Kings dominated in HDSC's in the first half of the game.
The Oilers dominated the 2nd half of the game...icluding O/T.
The Kings just sat back.
Even the post game podcasts are validating that perspective.

I can see the line combos affecting the offence but on D its all about desire and a commitment to playing the right way. There just seemed to be little to no attention to detail.

Ya the Oilers can’t keep falling behind.

That being said the Kings approach isn’t sustainable either. Just running a really short bench and going balls to the walls the first 2 periods. They tucker out.
The Kings play what the Vancouver Cucks system of last year. Pre-mature ejaculation and then get caved.

I disagree with you. Oilers had a post and Hyman / Drai missed wide open nets.

HDSC aren’t bogus… come on.

On Arvidsson sure. Podkolzin is good for the 4th line so can’t really fault the scouts on that one.
I'm a big fan of Podkolzin, he forechecks well and is hard on the puck. He gets to good places for opportunities but doesn't have much finish... I mean if he did he'd be getting much more than the 1MM we pay him.

Maybe I'm just on a high after last night, and I've been pretty down on the team in general even before this series, but if they can somehow squeak by L.A., I can see the Oilers going on a run (as long as they don't run up against Colorado). It's pretty clear that they have some guys that are a bit rusty/struggling coming back from injury and if there's any chance Ekholm can be back even at half capacity, they can make it interesting with guys recovering to full strength.

Of course there's business to take care of until then and they've been horrible in L.A. all season so that's going to be quite a mountain to climb in itself. One game at a time
