Post-Game Talk: Be still my Oily heart

I'm not sure y'all are aware of this, so now might be a good time to point it out:

NHL all-time PPG in the Playoffs:
1. Gretzky 1.84
2. McDavid 1.62
3. Lemieux 1.61
4. Draisaitl 1.50
5. MacKinnon 1.29
6. Messier 1.25

NHL all-time PPG for Defencemen in the Playoffs:
1. Orr 1.24
2. Bouchard 1.14
3. Makar 1.08
4. Leetch 1.02
5. Coffey 1.01

Six of the 11 listed were/are Edmonton Oilers.

I should just enjoy this win but I see a stat like this and it just annoys me again that this trio has never had a true number 1 goalie behind them 🤣🤣🤣

I don't know if I've ever seen a better duo than McD and Drai for pure, high octane, unstoppable offense. And yes, I include 99 and 11. Seriously.

If we could just keep some pucks out at the other end...

It's definitely concerning that the team needs these comebacks. I doubt it's sustainable.

But maybe it's not a permanent problem. The team seems to be figuring out the lineup more and refining. Even next game, we are probably bringing in Stecher for Emberson. Also, the truly tough rounds are 3 and 4, and we might have Ekholm back for those.
Ya the Oilers can’t keep falling behind.

That being said the Kings approach isn’t sustainable either. Just running a really short bench and going balls to the walls the first 2 periods. They tucker out.

The Kings "adjustments" would have to involve them playing more of their players imo. They're playing every game with 9 forwards and 4 defensemen, a lot of those guys in their 30s. They're gonna be tired come the 3rd period.
For sure, their coach is making some baffling plays of his own.

The way they were playing after 2 periods certainly didn't indicate a comeback was in the cards. They looked lost and lifeless. If they started games the way they ended them this series is over already.
Agreed, they need to get started more quickly, but the intensity they played the last 30 mins with would be TOO much over an entire team, but they need to find ways to create more energy for themselves.

That said, hanging around and having the horse to take you back will do alot for the group's overall confidence.

Re: the bolded. I was just going to post the same thing.
They arent going to get a win in LA playing half a game.
You’re right. But I don’t think they can just keep playing half a game. The crazy part is the series could easily be 3-1 for us too.
That overtime period this game I think will have a massive effect on the series. It showed LA that sure; they can shorten their bench if they want to, but they can’t play that game, we can. Our guys can handle the insane minutes, their guys can’t.

LA has yet to play the Oilers when we show up at the start, Game 5 is time for that to pull a definitive win.

You could be right about the effect of overtime.

That first period though...they could have easily been down 4 - 0. They were giving up odd man rush after odd man rush...turning the puck over time and time again. Ugly to watch.

How hard is it for a championship caliber team to actually start playing at the opening faceoff?
I just dont understand why this team hasnt learned that lesson yet.

They really do need a 60 minute game starting in game 5.

Have to to admit I didn't love the Perry resigning, but the man looks good and I was wrong.

Also, Bouchard is the most frustratingly good player I can remember. I go on a love and hate rollercoaster with him on a period by period basis

Can’t keep relying on these come backs. Need to play a complete game in LA. LA rarely loses at home, so it’s still going to very difficult to win this series. I’d like to see Stetcher replace Emberson.
Not that it won't be tough but things like "a team seldom loses at home" tend not to carry over to the playoffs in the same way. Home ice is an advantage but if LA plays while feeling under pressure it could also work against them.

Ultimately, I think it comes down to the Oilers not beating themselves, particularly in terms of goaltending and big mistakes. LA will try to stifle them. And a fast start for the Oilers would definitely help. And as you say a complete game would be huge.

Agree on both points.
I got Perry totally wrong. I thought he was too old.
The man is a machine...pushing 40 years old and he is still a major difference maker.
Absolutely remarkable.
