2017-2018 NHL Playoffs and 2018 Offseason

Playoffs

images

Many pundits and analysts expected this series to be quick and a domination by the Rangers. Not much to say. The Rangers know the way the pesky Flyers are so they went into the series as if the Flyers finished tied with them in the regular season. #NYR lines remain same as the combinations used after the Trade Deadline. Here is you series preview:

~ Leading scorer: NYR = Rick Nash (36-47-83)
PHI = Claude Giroux (23-44-67)
~ Starting Goaltender: NYR = Hernik Lundqvist (47-13-5; .928 SB%; 2.16 GAA)
PHI = Michal Neuvirth (35-29-2; .908 SV%; 2.95 GAA)

1st Round vs. Philadelphia
Game | Score | NYR Goals | Goalie | Game Notes
1 | 4-1 NYR | Grabner (1), Kreider (1), Jensen (1), Nieves (1) | Lundqvist (.925 SV%) (1.00 GAA) | Incredible game for 4th line
2 | 3-2 NYR | Nieves (2), Zibanejad (1) Oshie (1) | Lundqvist (.930 SV%) (2.00 GAA)
3 | 4-1 PHI | Buchnevich (1) | Lundqvist (.898 SV%) (4.05 GAA) |
4 | 2-0 NYR | Ceci (1,2) | Lundqvist (1.000 SV%) (0.00 GAA) |
5 | 1-0 PHI | | Lundqvist (.950 SV%) (1.02 GAA) |
6 | 4-2 PHI | Miller (1,2) | Lundqvist (.900 SV%) (4.00 GAA) | Oh no...
7 | 3-0 NYR | Oshie (2), Zibanejad (2), Zuccarello (1) | Lundqvist (1.000 GAA) (0.00 GAA) | Rangers are on to Round 2!

The Rangers top 2 scorers in the regular season didn't exist in the first round, yet the Rangers still won. If they hope top win the Stanley Cup, Stepan and Nash must find a way onto the score board.

With the New York Rangers barely escaping the Flyers, fans and observers alike turned on them and took Wahington as the team that would knock out the Presidents' Trophy Winners. Lines remain the same for the Rangers. Here is you series preview:

~ Leading scorer: NYR = Rick Nash (36-47-83)
WSH = Alex Ovechkin (36-41-77)
~ Starting Goaltender: NYR = Henrik Lundqvist (47-13-5; .928 SV%; 2.16 GAA)
WSH = Braden Holtby (40-22-5; .924 SV%; 2.26 GAA)

2nd Round vs. Washington
Game | Score | NYR Goals | Goalie | Game Notes
1 | 2-0 WSH | | Lundqvist (.940 SV%) (1.50 GAA) |
2 | 8-2 WSH | Zibanejad (3,4) | Lundqvist (.888 SV%) (5.00GAA); Raanta (.815 SV%) (5.23 GAA) | Line Changes made. Reunited big 3, Chris Kreider down.
3 | 5-2 WSH | Zuccarello (2), Miller (3) | Lundqvist (.862 SV%) (4.04 GAA) | Oshie-Stepan-Nash; Miller-Zibanejad-Zuccarello/Skjei-Ceci;McDonagh-Clendening
4 | 4-2 NYR | Zuccarello (3), Jensen (2), Nash (1), Stepan (1) | Lundqvist (.925 SV%) (2.00 GAA) |
5 | 3-1 NYR | Nash (2), Zuccarello (4), Zibanejad (5) | Lundqvist (.961 SV%) (1.00 GAA) |
6 | 5-1 NYR | Nash (3,4), Zibanejad (6), Redmond (1), Stepan (2) | Lundqvist (.956 SV%) (1.00 GAA) | Game 7 baby!
7 | 6-5 NYR | Buchnevich (2), Zibanejad (7), Nash (5), Stepan (3), Hayes (1), Zuccarello (5) | Lundqvist (.852 SV%) (5.00 GAA)

The New York Rangers became just the 5th team in NHL history to come back from dwon 3-0 and win the series. This could be the last straw in Washington as the Rangers beat them out of the playoffs again. Normally when a team loses a lead like that changes are made, but the Rangers move on!

With the New York Rangers erasing an 0-3 lead against the Washington Capitals, how can anyone bet against them at this point? But, this is a tough one. The Rangers and the Senators have made quite a few big trades since GM Brant King took over the helm of New York's finest. If anyone has the insight to beat the Rangers, it would be the Senators; and vice versa. Here is your series preview:

~ Leading scorer: NYR = Rick Nash (36-47-83)
OTT = Kyle Turris (28-47-75)
~ Starting Goaltender: NYR = Henrik Lundqvist (47-13-5; .928 SV%; 2.16 GAA)
OTT = Andrew Hammond (27-21-3; .916 SV%; 2.45 GAA)

3rd Round vs. Ottawa
Game | Score | NYR Goals | Goalie | Game Notes
1 | 7-2 NYR | Nash (6,7), Zuccarello (6), McDonagh (1), Hayes (2), Jensen (3), Skjei (1) | Lundqvist (.945 SV%) (2.00 GAA) | Lundqvist 35/37/Hammond 29/36
2 | 3-1 OTT | Hayes (3) | Lundqvist (.931 SV%) (2.00 GAA) | From 7 goals to 1. WOW
3 | 2-1 OTT | Buchnevich (3) | Lundqvist (.944 SV%) (2.04 GAA) | Another 1 goal game...
4 | 3-1 OTT | Stepan (4) | Lundqvist (.931 SV%) (2.00 GAA) | Changes made on offense
5 | 3-1 NYR | McDonagh (2), Stepan (5), Oshie (3) | Lundqvist (.962 SV%) (1.00 GAA) |
6 | 6-5 (OT) | Zuccarello (7,8,9), Buchnevich (4,5), Jensen (4) | Lundqvist (.861 SV%) (5.54 GAA) | Zuccarello with a big game performance, Kreider to 4th
7 | 3-1 NYR | Zibanejad (8), Stanton (1), Grabner (2) | Lundqvist (.956 SV%) (1.00 GAA) | Zibanejad scores late, 20 seconds later Grabner, + EN 2 mins later

The New York Rangers once again succumbed to the Sens early push and fell behind 3-1. But compared to what the Rangers had just done this was nothing. And you could sense it in Ottawa's gameplay once they had a chance to eliminate NYR. They were nervous, the Rangers were in their heads and they hadn't even played good hockey yet. The rangers head back to the SCF for a chance to win back-to-back cups.

The Rangers face former backup goalie Cam Talbot and the Edmonton Oilers. "The Goalbuster", as he was formerly known, would be one of the few goaltenders to rival Lundqvist for the Vezina in the past 2 years.But; the New York Rangers look like they cannot be closed out. They can be pushed to the brink, but always come back. They bend but they don't break. But against the Connor McDavid led Oilers, can they escape if they fall behind? It certainly took strength but a little luck too. Will they run out? Can they come back again? Or will they run away with it? All these questions lead to one thing...who will win the Stanley Cup. Here is your series preview:

~ Leading scorer: NYR = Rick Nash (36-47-83)
EDM = Connor McDavid (31-46-77)
~ Starting Goaltender: NYR = Henrik Lundqvist (47-13-5; .928 SV%; 2.16 GAA)
EDM = Cam Talbot (42-16-4; .930 SV%; 1.98 GAA)

Round 4 (SCF) vs. Edmonton
Game | Score | NYR Goals | Goalie | Game Notes
1 | 4-3 NYR | Buchnevich (6), Kreider (2), Oshie (4), Ceci (3) | Lundqvist (.896 SV%) (3.00 GAA) | Rangers never led until 4-34-2 NYR
2 | 4-2 NYR | Miller (4), Oshie (5), Nash (8), Zibanejad (9) | Lundqvist (.935 SV%) (2.00 GAA) |
3 | 3-1 EDM | Stepan (6) | Lundqvist (.900 SV%) (3.07 GAA) |
4 | 4-3 (2OT) NYR | Hayes (4), Grabner (3), Jensen (5), Redmond (2) | Lundqvist (.911 SV%) (2.22 GAA) | ZACH REDMOND, AND THE RANGERS ARE ONE WIN AWAY!!
5 | 7-0 EDM | | Lundqvist (.687 SV%) (11.70 GAA); Raanta (.904 SV%) (3.49 GAA) | WHAT THE *****...
6 | 4-2 EDM | Zuccarello (10), Nash (9) | Lundqvist (.882 SV%) (4.08 GAA) | Lundqvist needs to be better. Trio put back together, Buchnevich-Zibanejad-Zucc
7 | 6-5 NYR | Buchnevich (7,8), Zuccarello (11,12), Nash (10), Grabner (4) | Lundqvist (.864 SV%) (5.17 GAA) | THE NEW YORK RANGERS ARE BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS!!!

2018 NHL Entry Draft

No actvivity at the draft for the Rangers....they feel the need to stay where they are at with their NHL club. The addition of Patrik Laine will only make this team better next season.

Resign Phase

~ Rick Nash leveraged his odd career year at age 33 into a 2-year deal.
~ The Rangers also had RFA's Nieves, Buchnevich, Miller, Skjei, and Clendening to sign. Along with UFA Michael Grabner.

When Nashville came to us and offered to talk salary off our hands so we could get J.T under contract, we were all for it. For the most part we didn't want it to be Nieves, we really liked that kid. Hard working, skilled prospect. But when the 1st came into play for him, it was as good as done.

~ GM Brant King on Nieves trade.

Things to watch

images

#1 = Ryan McDonagh and other UFA's
Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh is set to ask for 5.5M+ on his next contract and with both sides wanting him to stay in New York, it's just a matter of can they fit him under the cap? Other UFA's include Kevin Hayes and Mats Zuccarello, who are both also wanting to resign. Zuccarello will most likely take a pay cut, While Hayes will use at least the money saved from Zuccarello's new deal.

images

#2 = Chris Kreider's production
Chris Kreider is giving the Rangers bare minimum of what they expected when they signed him to him to his 6 year deal, having not cracked 50 points or scored 15 goals in each of the last 3 years (contract year + first 2). If Kreider can elevate his play to get to 20 goals and 50 points, he will most likely stay a Ranger. But if not, look to see him get traded for a pick to free up cap space. Not to mention he has forced the Rangers, who do not want to give up on him, into a 3-man rotation for 4th line LW. He, Laine, and Buchnevich will all take turns until the problem is solved. If Kreider reaches his expectations, look for Pavel Buchnevich to be traded since Laine has taken over his spot as the Rangers star young stud.

images

#3 = Henrik Lundqvist
It seems as though every year Henrik Lundqvist is on this list. Last season it was good, but this season it is bad. After a poor, uncharacteristic playoff performance, many question whether or not that marks the start of his decline. He always defies the odds, but there has to be a point where he can't anymore...right? If Hank can pull through and put up another All-star season, then he will further solidify his legend as one of the best goalies in modern history.

2018-2019 NHL Season

2018-2019 Season Preview

images

The New York Rangers enter the season having won the past 2 Stanley Cup Championships; the first team to accomplish that feat in nearly 20 years. GM Brant king has done a wonderful job keeping this team together but last offseason was rough, having to trade away Nieves, and lose Grabner to Free Agency. Adam Clendening remains unsigned.

In net, Henrik Lundqvist reutrns for a season in which he will play some of it at 37 years of age so a drop off in certain stats is almost a certainty. That being said, whenever they have Hank in net, they know they have a chance to win. His new backup is Magnus Hellberg, as he takes the departed Antti Raanta's spot. Hellberg is expected to provide 15-20 games of solid, above-averge play1 so the Rangers can have the King at his best for the playoffs.

Just before the season the Rangers signed depth defender Ryan Stanton to a 3 year deal. He tested free agency but ultimately decided to return to the club that he's won 2 Stanley Cups with. That made a battle between him and other depth defenseman Zach Redmond. Ryan Stanton won the job for now, but him and Redmond will most likely switch in and out throughout the season. The top pairing of McDonagh and Ceci returns, while Marc Staal gets back from injury after missing all of last years playoffs, to play with Brady Skjei.

The big 3 return on the top line (Oshie-Stepan-Nash) and are all expected to be somewhere around their totals last season. Kredier gets one last chance to prove himself, playing on a line with the dynamic Z's (Zibanejad and Zuccarello). While the future leaders of this club, Miller, Hayes and Buchnevich form a young, speedy 3rd line. For the start of the year, Patrik Laine is stuck on the 4th line but once the Kreider situation is resolved, he will have a permanent scoring line role.

With Micahel McNiven winning the battle against Fucale for the Canadiens heir to Price, Fucale was no longer needed. To worsen his situation, Michael DiPietro, a star goalie drafted in 2017, will be ready for as a backup in 3-4 years, around the time Price should be considering retirement. But considering Price will be 35, declining, but still having 2 years on his deal; DiPietro can season his game in the AHL. The Rangers felt the addition was necessary with Hank very close to retiring. They managed to keep the price low, but they also gave up some considerable assets. This trade also got value for an unsignable RFA Clendening. Fucale will take over Magnus Hellberg's spot as backup and Hellberg has been returned to Hartford to platoon start with Skapski.

Zach Fucale | 4-0-1 | .936 SV% | 1.81 GAA
Magnus Hellberg | 4-2-0 | .917 SV% | 2.37 GAA

The New York Rangers are on pace to have the best 82 game regular season ever. On pace to get 64 wins, NYR is on a roll. Heading into the 41 game mark, are on a 9-game winning streak, and are 18-2 in their last 20. Everyone is clicking, and this team is tighter than ever. That being said, some pretty hefty contracts need to be signed this summer, so the Rangers need to take advantage of this team and win their 3rd straight Stanley Cup.

In net, Henrik Lundqvist is a full tier above everyone else in the world. If the season ended today, he would hold the highest ever single season SV%. He is at a level no one has ever been at and it's coming at a season where he will be 37. He will go down as one of the best goaltenders of all time. Behind him, newly acquired Zach Fucale is having a great debut for NYR holding the 5th best SV% for goalies with 5+ games played. If the Rangers goaltenders can keep up this play, it will be one of the best performance from a set of goalies of all time.

On defense the Rangers have a recipe for success. Cody Ceci is 5th in defensive scoring and on pace to shatter his career high in points. That trade & signing may be King's best move to date. Meanwhile McDonagh, team captain and pending UFA, looks like he gels well with Ceci and should hit 40 points for the 3rd time ion his career. Once again the partnership of Staal and Skjei is working perfectly holding the highest +/- on the team (27 and 28 respectively). First year Ranger Ryan Sproul is having a breakout year and should expect to see his role increased following the season. Ryan Stanton is once again providing great value for his cheap price. While the defensive core has stayed perfect on the health side of things, Zach Redmond has yet to play a game.

Derek Stepan has taken leaps and bounds to show he is a true elite center in this league. Putting up his first 60 point season in 16-17, he followed that up by scoring 23 goals and adding 48 assists for 71 points; his first 70 point year. This season, he has taken yet another step forward, and is on pace to crack 80 points. Along with that, his 42 points puts him T-9th in NHL scoring. His wingers, Rick Nash and T.J Oshie are both having great years as well. Nash is seeing a slight decrease in points, but still providing tremendous value for 6.6M; while Oshie is a little disappointing with the possibility of not hitting 50 points very real. The ZZ Kreider line is not clicking the way the Blueshirts wanted to so Miller was moved up to play with them. While Kredier does have 15 goals already, he still is not on pace to collect 50 points. Zibanejad probably not going to hit 50 points, something he hasn't done since 14-15. Zucarello is still a fan favorite, and is still putting up points. The young tenacious 3rd line of Miller, Hayes and Buchnevich has underachieved a little with all 3 not on pace to match last seasons totals. Kreider moving down and switching with Miller gives them a little more speed and strength. Meanwhile the not solidified 4th line of Laine, Fast and Jensen has been wonderful for New York with Laine 4th in rookie scoring and Fast making the most of his second chance with the big club. Jensen is on pace to beat his career high in points by at least 10.

images

RANGERS NEWS: Teams inquiring about Chris Kreider. He has 15-9-24 in 39 games this season.
With the team having so much success at this point, it would be a surprise to see anyone traded in or out until the draft. That being said, the Rangers could be very interested with parting with Chris Kreider. At one point he was a very promising power forward, but he never reached his potential. A one-for-one deal is realistic but it is more likely they hint for prospects and picks as Patrik Laine can step up anytime. Other than a possible, but unlikely Kreider deal, the Rangers should be quiet at the Trade Deadline.

images

BREAKING NEWS: Pavel Buchnevich concussed, out until April 20th.
February 10th, 2019
In some terrible news for Rangers fans, the young dynamic 3rd liner was horrifically injured. He was hit from beind and went head first into to boards. He was stretchered off the ice, and is in bad condition. Patrik Laine steps up and gets his chance on the 3rd line with Miller and Hayes while depth forward Oscar Lindberg steps in on the 4th line.

With Fabbri and the Blues not seeing eye to eye on the way he needs to play for them to win, he was a frequently in the doghouse and demoted to 4th line duties. So we took advantage of that and offered Kreider, who plays a physical game, for Fabbri. Of course, with Fabbri being younger and having a much higher ceiling; there were additions on our side. But overall this was a fair trade for both teams.

Season Recap

The New York Rangers had a terrible second half compared to their first half. Going 20-15-5 they looked very average heading into the playoffs, something that should genuinely worry fans. This team faded and barely hung onto their 14 point lead for the Presidents' Trophy. This could've been much worse had the Rangrs not been incredible to start the year.

Henrik Lundqvist was still incredible but nothing near what he was in the first half. That being said, anyone who expected him to finish the year with a .950 SV% is stupid. He finished third in SV% and GAA among goalies with 50+ games played. He had another incredible year, but will most likely finish as the runner up for the Vezina Trophy for the 3rd year straight. Zach Fucale's early season success faded as his SV% shot down and his GAA bloated.

Cody Ceci finished T-4th in defensive scoring and he was by far the Rangers best defender this season. Not far behind him was Ryan McDonagh, who set a new career high in goals (18), and finished with 39 points. He was dependable at both ends of the ice and provided leadership as the team captain. Ryan Sproul was a pleasant surprise as he put up 5-24-29 while playing all 82 games. These totals smashed his former career highs. Not much can be said about Marc Staal and Brady Skjei, as they were just dependable, reliable and a defensive force all season. Also, with 11 points, Marc Staal had his highest points total since 2014-2015. Ryan Stanton may have very well given the Rangers the best value contract in the NHL as he played at a Top 4 level all season. Depth defender Zach Redmond did not suit up at all.

Derek Stepan finished 8th in NHL scoring (4th among centers), further solidifying himself as one of the top centermen this league has. While putting up 81 points, he also played an integral role on both PK's. He is a legitimate Selke contender. Rick Nash once again scored 30 goals and put up 75 points on Stepan's flank. Their 3rd player in their trio, T.J Oshie, failed to hit 20 goals for the 5th straight year, and once again fell below 60 points. Robby Fabbri finished the season with 31 points, which means he put up 6 points in 20 games after the Trade Deadline. Not great value but his linemates weren't that much help either. Mika Zibanejad had his lowest point total in 5 years, and Mats Zuccarello ddin't reach the 50 point mark for the 2nd time in 3 years. Miller managed a mere 44 points his lowest points total in 5 years, and Kevin Hayes only got 42. Buchnevich got 29 points in 53 games, which could call for the young guns trade. Laine had 44 points in his rookie season which leaves him 4th in rookie scoring. Fast had a career high 36 points, which will most likely guarantee his spot on the club next year, while Jensen put up 29 points, a new career high. Depth forward Oscar Lindberg had 3-5-8 in 35 games.

With the New York Rangers having the terrible second half they did, lots of people doubted they were the best team in the league. But. against the 2WC Hurricanes, the Rangers were still expected to win with ease. The Rangers won the season series 4-1. Here is your series preview:

~ Leading scorer: NYR = Derek Stepan (23-58-81)
CAR = Teuvo Teravainen (14-64-78)
~ Starting Goaltender: NYR = Henrik Lundqvist (40-16-3; .929 SV%; 2.10 GAA)
CAR = Ben Bishop (37-21-4; .927 SV%; 2.11 GAA)

Round 1 vs. Carolina
Game | Score | NYR Goals | Goalie | Game Notes
1 | 2-1 NYR | Fabbri (1), McDonagh (1) | Lundqvist (.960 SV%) (1.00 GAA) |
2 | 2-1 NYR | Oshie (1), Stepan (1) | Lundqvist (.966 SV%) (1.00 GAA) |

4 | 4-2 NYR | Fast (1), Hayes (1), Zibanejad (1), Nash (1) | Lundqvist (.909 SV%) (2.00 GAA) | RANGERS SWEEP, THEY'RE ONTO ROUND 2!

The New York Rangers gave their fanbase something to be proud about after a show on stellar defense in the first 2 games, and a burst of offense in the last 2. Lundqvist needs to return to a happy medium between the .90_ and the .94/5/6_ if the Rangers want to be fully successful, but hee's their rock so give him credit. If the Rangers hope to continue to move on, certain players need to get going offensively.

Once again the Rangers meet the Flyers in the playoffs. The bottom 6 forward group has to get their offensive game going, but the top 6 has been incredible. In the first round, Lundqvist had 3 great games, one average, and 3 bad. He needs to find consistency or this series will be a quick one, as the Flyers have a goalie that stole their first round for them in Neuvirth. The Flyers were the 2nd team in the Metro and a much better team that the Rangers previously faced. During the season, the teams met 4 times, with the Flyers dominating the Rangers, taking the series 3-0-1. The Rangers were a mere 1-3-0. Here is your series preview:

~ Leading scorer: NYR = Derek Stepan (23-58-81)
PHI = Jakub Vorachek (27-55-82)
~ Starting Goaltender: NYR = Henrik Lundqvist (40-16-3; .929 SV%; 2.10 GAA)
PHI = Michal Neuvirth (29-13-2; .935 SV%; 2.03 GAA)

Round 2 vs. Philadelphia
Game | Score | NYR Goals | Goalie | Game Notes
1 | 1-0 PHI | | Lundqvist (.967 SV%) (1.00 GAA) | Rangers got outshot by double, and heavily outplayed
2 | 3-1 PHI | Buchnevich (1) | Lundqvist (.900 SV%) (3.00 GAA) | Lundqvist's inconsistency continues...Changes to offense made
3 | 4-3 NYR | Zuccarello (2), Oshie (3), Nash (2), Miller (1) | Lundqvist (.875 SV%) (4.00 GAA) | Bad game for Lundqvist. Needs to be much much better and should be much much better//Brady Skjei injured, out 1 month
4 | 5-2 NYR | Jensen (1), Hayes (2), Fabbri (2), Fast (2), Ceci (1) | Lundqvist (.951 SV%) (2.00 GAA) | Rangers got outshot 41-18, Lundqvist stood on head...finally
5 | 4-2 PHI | Nash (3), McDonagh (2) | Lundqvist (.833 SV%) (5.18 GAA), Fucale (1.000 SV%) (0.00 GAA) {12:30 played} | Lundqvist goes from best to worst, Rangers can't win unless he gets back to former self.
6 | 2-1 NYR | Zibanejad (2), McDonagh (3) | Lundqvist (.956 SV%) (1.00 GAA) | Okay now Lundqvist is just toying with my head...
7 | 4-0 NYR | Buchnevich (2), Oshie (4), Fast (3), Zibanejad (3) | Lundqvist (1.000 SV%) (0.00 GAA) | RANGERS WIN, AND THEY'RE ON THE THE 3rd ROUND!!

In a very close call, the Rangers just barely snuck by the Philadelphia Flyers. Their franchise netminder showed some resiliency after hitting a rough patch mid series and returned to continue his Game 7 heroics. The new forward lines created after Game 3 are Laine-Stepan-Nash, Oshie-Fabbri-Zuccarello, Miller-Zibanejad-Hayes and Buchnevich-Fast-Jensen.

The New York Rangers came together to best the Philadelphia Flyers in 7 games. But, this is an even tougher challenge. The Penguins are no small task, with Crosby, Malkin and Letang along with newfound depth. The Penguins were an offensive juggernaut, with all but 2 of their regulars having 21 or more points. That being said the Rangers are the favorites going in as people have seen their grit and willingness to win along with their finesse. Plus they have won the cup 2 times before this. The Rangers are exceptionally good at pinpointing their opponents weakness and attacking it, and the Penguins weak link in goaltending. Matt Murray never panned about and Fleury has declined in a big way. Here is your series preview:

~ Leading scorer: NYR = Derek Stepan (23-58-81)
PIT = Sidney Crosby (33-58-91)
~ Starting Goaltender: NYR = Henrik Lundqvist (40-16-3; .929 SV%; 2.10 GAA)
PIT = Marc-Andre Fleury (36-19-3; .915 SV%; 2.53 GAA)

Round 3 vs. Pittsburgh
Game | Score | NYR Goals | Goalie | Game Notes
1 | 4-3 NYR | Zuccarello (3), Fast (4), Zibanejad (4), Redmond (1) | Lundqvist (.880 SV%) (3.00 GAA) | Not a good start for Lundqvist, but very exciting game
2 | 5-4 PIT (OT) | Fast (5,6), Nash (4), Oshie (5) | Lundqvist (.861 SV%) (4.09 GAA) | Another terrible game for Lundqvist...Miller switched with Laine
3 | 5-1 NYR | Stepan (2,3), Fast (7), Buchnevich (3), Zibanejad (5) | Lundqvist (.967 SV%) (1.00 GAA) |
4 | 3-1 NYR | Stepan (4), Ceci (2), Sproul (1) | Lundqvist (.964 SV%) (1.00 GAA) | Rangers on verge of heading back to SCF for 3rd straight year and 4th time in 6!
5 | 5-3 PIT | Zuccarello (4), Stepan (5), Hayes (3) | Lundqvist (.833 SV%) (5.00 GAA) |
6 | 4-3 PIT (OT) | Nash (5), Fast (8), Zibanejad (6) | Lundqvist (.875 SV%) (3.37 GAA) | Another bad game for Hank...line changes occur
7 | 5-4 NYR (OT) | Stepan (6), Oshie (6), McDonagh (4), Nash (6,7,8) | Lundqvist (.800 SV%) (3.89 GAA) | Oh Hank, you're lucky

The New York Rangers avoided disaster. There league best regular season offense showed up at the right time, because their franchise netminder was about to lose them the series. That being said, the Rangers will ride or die with Lundqvist. The big 2 of Nash ans Stepan awoke at the perfect time and Fast continued his great play. The defense was shaky but not as bad as "the King" made them look.

The New York Rangers continue to defy odds. Normally when a team has a starting goaltender that only put up 2 games of .900+ SV% you lose the series; but the Rangers managed to score enough. That will not continue. The Rangers need Lundqvist to buckle down and return to his Vezina caliber self They got their big guns going and they have tons of contributions from the depth players so all they need is for King Henrik to find that last push. Against the St. Louis Blues, and Chris Kreider, the Rangers will need to be able to push the pace, while still being able to handle the physical part of the Blues game. McDonagh and Ceci will need to be better than ever to meet Pietrangelo and Shattenkirks play, and Marc Staal with have to be as good as Jay Boumeester. Rick Nash will have to score and keep up with Tarasenko. That's alot of hoping. But if Lundqvist can play to a level everyone knows he can, he can give the Rangers a free pass sometimes. Here is your series preview:

~ Leading scorer: NYR = Derek Stepan (23-58-81)
STL = Vladimir Tarasenko (38-40-78)
~ Starting Goaltender: NYR = Henrik Lundqvist (40-16-3; .929 SV%; 2.10 GAA)
STL = Jake Allen (34-25-3; .906 SV%; 2.62 GAA)

Round 4 (SCF) vs. St. Louis
Game | Score | NYR Goals | Goalie | Game Notes
1 | 2-1 NYR | Laine (2), Oshie (7) | Lundqvist (.970 SV%) (1.00 GAA) |
2 | 3-2 STL (2OT) | Zuccarello (5), Miller (2) | Lundqvist (.921 SV%) (2.14 GAA) |
3 | 6-2 NYR | Nash (9,10), Buchnevich (4), Zibanejad (7), Fast (9), Ceci (3) | Lundqvist (.937 SV%) (1.97 GAA), Zach Fucale (.944 SV%) (2.03 GAA) | Lundqvist briefly injured, but will start next game
4 | 3-2 NYR | Fast (10), Oshie (8), Stepan (7) | Lundqvist (.931 SV%) (2.00 GAA) | 1 win away!!!!
5 | 2-1 NYR | Ceci (4), Nash (11) | Lundqvist (.965 SV%) (1.00 GAA) | RANGERS HAVE WON 3 STRAIGHT STANLEY CUPS!!!

2019 NHL Entry Draft

images

BREAKING NEWS: Henrik Lundqvist retires from NHL.
This one hurts. Henrik Lundqvist was the Rangers best goalie in Franchis histroy, and one of the best goalies in modern histroy. Even in his twilight years he was putting up SV% around .930!! Just how good he was was shown in how he won 3 straight Stanley Cups to end off his career. His number 30 has been retired by the Rangers and he has now taken over the role as goalie coach (sharing the duties with Benoit Allaire). Unless Zach Fucale can carry the Rangers like Lundqvist did, the Rangers might look at a rebuild or retool.

~ At the NHL Draft, the Rangers had no reason to make any moves as they had a newfound cap space after Lundqvists retirement. That being said, there will be changes as the Rangers underperformed and seemed slow and tired this season.

~ The Rangers had 2 first round picks in this draft. Picking at #26 and #30, the Rangers were looking for a late round steal.

Review of key signings
Player | Review
Ryan McDonagh | For GM King, this was an easy decision. McDonagh is their captain , and #1 d-man. The Rangers lucked out that he didn't his 40 points more often than he did as he would've taken 7 million instead.
Mats Zuccarello | Another easy one. Zucc is a fan favorite , and he's quick and thinks the game of hockey very well. He provides 45-55 points annually , and if not for Marc Staal, would have an "A" on his jersey .
Patrik Laine | Interesting deal here. Could be a telltale sign of changes to come. Patrik Laine spent most of last season on the 4th line , but with his new contract, he is pretty much assured a spot in the top 9 - probably even the top 6 . As of now, the Rangers have 10 top 9 forwards, so who will go is the real question. Other than that, this deal could be an over payment in year one, but will be a bargain from then on .
Kevin Hayes | Nothing of note here. Just a solid deal for a 3rd line center who can play 2nd if needed. Acutally the Rangers could get some pretty nice value from this one.
Zach Fucale | Now this one is interesting. Instead of locking their young goalie up long-term the Rangers signed him to a very, very cheap deal for just 2 years. This is an interesting prove-it deal by Brant King as if Fucale proves it, he could demand 5M+ on his next deal.
Nick Jensen | This is a great deal. Jensen has been a mainstay on the 4th line RW. He provides speed and skill an is now on a cheap long term deal. This contract is tradeable is Jensen falters, but if he excels, this is a deal that the Rangers can comfortably fit under their cap.

Free Agency

Heading into free agency the Rangers had 5.660M in cap space, largely in part to Lundqvist retiring. Realistically, the Rangers should be searching for another top 4 d-man, and a veteran goalie to platoon start with Fucale.

Review of key signing(s)
Player | Review
Matt Duchene | The Rangers surprised just about everyone with this signing . Already needing to get rid of 1 forward - to move Laine into the Top 9/6 - the Rangers further bolstered their glut of forwards by adding Duchene. More on this move later.
Benoit Pouliot | From a certain perspective one could see reason in the Duchene signing, but this one makes little sense at all . Now, with Benoit Pouliot presumably joining the 4th line LW (Where Laine was) with Fast and Jensen, the Rangers have 16/12 NHL forwards and need to rid themselves of 3 . All this without bolstering the defense, which will be needed in front of the young, inexperienced Fucale; and without getting a backup plan for Fucale. This just doesn't make much sense.

Originally, our plan was to seek a top four defenseman, but when Duchene became available on this cheap deal was irresistable. This is a guy who scored the most goals of his NHL career last year, but when the gave it to other guys, the puck wouldn't go in. That's the only reason why he had his lowest point total in a full NHL season. Duchene is super talented, provides leadership, and is one hell of a fast skater.

As for Benoit, we feel he can be a guide through the possible decline in points that could happen for Fast and Jensen after the had career years. He knows all about adversity and he knows how to rebound, heck, he did it here in New York not all that long ago.

Things to Watch

images

#1 = T.J Oshie Trade Watch
T.J Oshie has notified the Rangers that he is grateful for the time he has spent with the organization, but would like to take on a bigger leadership role elsewhere. The Rangers currently have their captain and "A's" locked up for 2 more seasons. With the Rangers having a gridlock of capable scoring forwards, they are likely to take this as a motive to trade him. Expect to see him wearing a new jersey before the season starts.

images

#2 = Zach Fucale and the Goaltending Situation
The Rangers head into the unknown this season as they are without their franchise goaltender Henrik Lundqvist for the first time in 15 years. The young Fucale has big shoes to fill, and with the Rangers expecting to be cup contenders again, he needs to perform. If he doesn't not only would it be disastrous for the Rangers, it could ruin his cred. Having been the Montreal Canadiens star prospect at one time, he was beaten out by 2 goaltenders. Now, if he cannot get a grasp on this glorious opportunity, it could be the last good one he gets.

2019-2020 NHL Season

BREAKING NEWS: T.J Oshie traded to Minnesota for Jonas Brodin

To NYR | To MIN
Jonas Brodin | T.J Oshie (88, Exact Top 6 F)
3rd 2020 |

Player Profile
Player | OVR | Age | Position | Potential | Player Type | GP, G-A-P | Years | AAV
Jonas Brodin | 86 | 26 | D | Low Top 4 D | 2 Way Defender | 82, 6-24-30 (2018-2019) | 2 | 4.170M AAV

The New York Rangers won big time in this trade. They shipped off pending UFA and 32 year old T.J Oshie for a defender who's coming off a career year and is in his prime. The Wild decided that Brodin's value would never be higher, so they took advantage and used that to get Oshie. A natural right winger, Oshie played LW his whole career in New York, but with the Wild weak on RW he will go back to his natural position. Also, with Koivu retired and Parise and Suter already announcing they are after this season, Oshie has as good of a chance at being the Minnesota Wilds next captain.

Season Preview

The New York Rangers are primed for another long playoff run. GM Brant King has positioned his team very well to be the first team to win 4 straight Stanley Cups since the New York Islanders in the early 80's.

Things are very different this time around. The Rangers no longer have a guaranteed clutch guy in net. They have youngster Zach Fucale now. All the Rangers hopes ride with this guy now. If he's ready for it the Rangers will once again be favorites, if not they will falter and become a non-factor. Most likely, but we'll get to that. The Rangers have a rookie backup in Brandon Halverson. Halverson impressed last year in limited action at the AHL level, but his season was derailed by injury. The rangers head into the season with a situation in net, where it is the only question mark. With a very inexperienced last line of defense, the Rangers could be in trouble if this gamble doesn't work out.

The Rangers defense was a point of concern, as their positive numbers were almost certainly made better by Lundqvists stellar play. So with Fucale as the new starting goalie, the defense was viewed as a position that needed to be enforced with another quality defenseman. The addition of Jonas Brodin solves that 100%. It allows Marc Staal to ease into the 3rd pairing on the left side and make the transition into his twilight years much easier. Along with that, he is mature beyond his years and provides a responsible partner for Sproul. Stanton slides in as the 7th defender and oh, let's not forget the amazing top pairing of McDonagh and Ceci.

The Rangers forward core is as deep as ever. The Rangers had high hopes for Pavel Buchnevich to be a 30 goal, 30 assist guy but he has failed to reach expectations and has found himself as the odd man out of the top 9 forward group. With 36 point guy Jesper Fast waiting as the 13th forward, Buchnevich is in serious trouble. Fast is about 1.7M cheaper and only produces about 8 less points than Buchnevich. That being said, with Rick Nash likely retiring at seasons end, Buchnevich will most definitely move back onto the 3rd line - if he's still around. Laine replaces Oshie on the top line with Stepan and Nash so it should be interesting to watch how they perform. On the second line, newly acquired Matt Duchene centers Mats Zuccarello and Robby Fabbri in what could be the fastest trio on the Rangers. Mika Zibanejad is between J.T Miller and Kevin Hayes on the 3rd line. This line has just about every element a line needs to succeed, Hayes can play a big physical game, Miller can score at will, and Zibanejad can distribute the puck at an astonishing rate. On the the 4th line, new addition Benoit Pouliot and Buchnevich flank Nicklas Jensen. The forward group should be the least of the Rangers worries as they have one of the most dynamic groups in the league.

BREAKING NEWS: Rangers acquire veteran goaltender Ryan Miller from Canucks

Ryan Miller | 85 | 39 | G | Exact Starter | Hybrid | 15, 8-6-1; .908 SV%; 2.74 GAA | 1 | 1.365M AAV

With Brandon Halverson playing in 7 games and having the worst SV% and GAA in the league, and the Rangers 2 games below .500, he was on the move. With the suspected issue heading into this season (goaltending) proving to be worse than predicted, the New York Rangers needed a proven player to help out. Miller is 39 years old and no doubt retiring after this season. With the goaltending being so bad, the Rangers were willing to give a 23 year old to get a 39 year old. Halverson played himself out of New York.

Ryan Miller | 3-3-1 | .910 SV% | 2.66 GAA
Brandon Halverson (VAN) | 2-5-0 | .861 SV% | 4.41 GAA

This season marks the end of New York Rangers dominance. The third line isn't producing, guys that were supposed to help the defense have hurt it, and the goaltending is worse than anyone could've thought. After 3 years of being the best team in hockey, the single - but massive - retirement of Henrik Lundqvist has taken this team from a contender to most likely missing the playoffs. The goaltending needs a makeover, and on that note, the whole team probaby does.

Ryan Miller hasn't had the impact the team hoped he would but he's been better than Zach Fucale. Both goalies are currently below the league average in SV% and GAA, and they have supposedly one of the best defenses in the league in front of them. Zach Fucale has shown he cannot handle being a starter just yet, and he's lucky he is on a very cheap deal or he would be on the trading block. The goaltending will be a focus at the Trade Deadline and the offseason ahead.

Ryan McDonagh and Cody Ceci have once again been studs during the first half of the regular season. But they are the only 2 New York can say that about, so they had to be split up to augment the play of the rest of the defense corps.Marc Staal has slowed considerably, Ryan Sproul is the worst +/- on the team - while also not putting up points; his primary purpose - and first year Ranger Jonas Brodin is a shell of the Brodin Minnesota seen last year. Brady Skjei is somewhere in between the mess and the studs, so that's a positive (I think).

Rick Nash and Derek Stepan have been stellar, as they have been for the last 2-3 years. Matt Duchene has been everything the Rangers have asked for, and Benoit Pouliot is even getting a chance on the top line with how bad everyone else is playing. The 2nd line of Fabbri, Duchene and Mats Zuccarello has been great. Robby Fabbri is on pace for his 1st 50 point season, and Mats Zuccarello is going to top 50 points once again. Patrik Laine has been dynamic offensively, but every line he plays on is a minus line so he needs to work on his defensive game or he won't last in the NHL. J.T Miller, Kevin Hayes and Mika Zibanejad have all spent time on the 4th line as they are absolutely terrible this season, all looking at a finish of around 30 points. Nick Jensen is having yet another splendid season, but unfortunately for his best friend and depth forward Jesper Fast, anyone has yet to be injured so he hasn't played a game to date.

RANGERS NEWS: J.T Miller could be traded by Trade Deadline
With J.T Miller struggling mightily this season, and turning UFA this offseason, the Rangers could look to trade the soon-to-be 27 year old. He will most likely not want to take a pay cut, so he could be too pricey for the Rangers. Although the Rangers would normally overpay a homegrown talent like Miller to stay, they do have a tight cap and need to fix an unstable horrifying crease.

~ Heading into the Trade Deadline the Rangers only lost one game in February and were on a streak of 13-1-1. That burst pulled them to 34-24-4 and the 2nd WC spot in the Eastern Conference.

Mixed reviews about this one. The Rangers get a former 1st overall pick that has not lived up to the hype for a younger player in Buchnevich who probably had too high of expectations. The Rangers feel Yakupov brings a bit more scoring to a club that needs it. Also this obviously has cap implications as it was rumored that Buchnevich wanted 4M on his next deal and Yakupov shouldn't take that much.

NEW YORK RANGERS CLINCH A SPOT IN THE STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS!!!
April 7th, 2020

Season Recap

Boy did the New York Rangers ever turn it on. Despite subpar goaltending, they managed to finsih wth 103 points on the season. It was an incredible second half, almost as good as the first half the Rangers had last season.

Zach Fucale never really proved he could handle starting in the regular season, so Ryan Miller gets the nod in the playoffs. The Rangers had to dig deep to overcome this because they are used to having a .920-.930 guy in Hank. Miller calmed the team down with his presence and he outperformed Fucale throughout the whole season. Although Miller didn't start as much, because the Rangers wanted to be sure Fucale wasn't ready, he will be more than ready for the playoffs after a strong finish to the regular season.

The Rangers defense managed to calm itself down over the long run. Ryan McDonagh reached 40 points while he also brought Ryan Sproul back to relevance. Before the two were paired together, McDonagh was as steady as ever, but Sproul waqs floundering. When the two were brought together, both elevated their games to new heights. Sproul had a partner who could not only move the puck as well as him, but could stay back when he wanted to be a rover. It worked perfectly. McDonaghs old partner, Cody Ceci, declined slightly in points but was still a force in both ends as he showed when he helped the struglling Jonas Brodin redefine his game. Brodin, who was a first year Ranger, could not find his game over the first half of the season, but gradually improved in the second half when paired with Ceci. He finished the season with 19 points and because he was trending up, we can only expect more come next season. Marc Staal declined slightly but still managed to form a formidable duo with Brady Skjei. Skjei, who matched a career high with 10 points, was able to continue his iron man streak on 4 seasons while also keep Mar Staal from being useless by giving him a partner who still has speed, but play the saem game as he does. Ryan Stanton was a glorious surprise, not playing until the last 5 games of the season, but posting 5 points in those games.

The New York Rangers forwards were the saviors of the team this season. Boasting 4 60 point scorers, the clubs offense was better than ever. Leading the was is elite centerman Derek Stepan who had his first point-per-game season of his NHL career. His longtime winger, Rick Nash had his 3rd straight 30-40-70 season as he led the club in goals. Their new winger on the top line, Patrik Laine, had his first 20 goal season while also putting up 57 points on route to a breakout year for the 2nd year NHL'er. The second line, which was deemed the fastest line in the NHL, feautured Robby Fabbri, Matt Duchene and Mats Zuccarello who all had better years than their previous one. The three quick playmakers used their slick passing to set up one another for easy goals. Kevin Hayes managed to hit 40 points for the 5th time in his 5 season NHL career, but Mika Zibanejad and J.T Miller did not as they put themselves in hot water with management. As well as possibly buying themselves a 1-way ticket out of New York. Nail Yakupov put up 13 points in 20 games with the Rangers and was +9 which was a vast improvement over his numbers in Edmonton. It may have even got him another contract with the Rangers. Benoit Pouliot and Nick Jensen were great 4th line wingers, meshing very well together and both chipping in 25+ points.

Playing a franchise as the Coyotes. After finishing with the 3rd worst record in 2015-16, did a lot of retooling over the last 2 trade deadlines and offseason, won the Cup with a lot of Vets and a great young 3rd line stepping up BIG TIME in the playoffs.

Additions:
Patrick Marleau(2017 trade deadline for a 2nd)

Joe Thornton(2016 Offseason Trade for a Dvorak and Brian Dumoulin[who was picked up on waivers])

Kyle Okposo(2016 FA 6.8m, 5 years)

Henrik Samuelsson(AHL Callup, 83 OVR)

William Karlsson(2016 offseason trade for Vermette)

Max Domi(AHL Callup)

Anthony Duclair(NHL Callup)

Matt Halischuck(2016 midseason trade for Chipchura)

Zdeno Chara(2016 Offseason trade for Laurent Dauphin)

Keith Yandle(2016 FA, 4 years 5m)

Nick Kronwall(2016 Trade Deadline for Toby Rieder)

Antti Raanta(2016 midseason trade for Mike Smith)

Lines:
Marleau-Thornton-Okposo
Boedker-Hanzal-Samuelsson
Domi-Karlsson-Duclair
Halischuck-Richardson-Vitale

OEL-Kronwall
Chara-Yandle
Stone-Gormley

Raanta
Lindback

Beat the Lightning in 5 games. Duclair won the Conn Smythe with an insane 15g, 24p in 19 games. Everytime he was on the ice everyone knew he was gonna fire it at the net, but the opponents couldn't figure out a way to stop him.

It was a good thing the Coyotes managed to put it all together that year, because Thornton, Marleau, Kronwall and Chara all retired immediately following the win, leaving some big holes to fill for next season.

PS, in this time line the Coyotes are purchased by a rich Saudi Sheik or something and therefore no longer had an internal cap. :p

So, I've decided on a new idea that is fair. Every time my team wins the cup, a yes replaces a no on the spin wheel. the highest it can get to is a ratio of yes/no = 9/3 (the lowest is 3/9) (it started at 6/6). there will always be 12 parts to the wheel. a conference final or stanley cup final means it stays the same. but a 1st or 2nd round playoff exit (or no playoffs at all) removes a yes and replaces it with a no unless the New York Rangers declare a rebuild.

Carolina Hurricanes fire General Manager Ron Francis In one of the more surprising storys we've heard General Manager and vice president of the Hurricanes has been fired. The teams owner Peter Kamranos Jr. told media tuesday that gm Ron Francis has been relieved of his duties as the teams general manager and they have hired Dale Degray of the OHLs Owen Sound Attack to replace him as manager. When asked about it Ron Francis had little to say to media this morning, seemingly in shock all he had to say was, "I'm deeply saddened by this decision but wish this great organization all the best in the future." More on this story and the 11:45 Press conference the team is holding this morning.
Tuesday Morning Press Conference
"I felt that the team was not trending in the right direction under Ron (Francis) so I made a change that I felt would help the team start to be winners sooner. It's all about winning and I'm hoping this change will help us get there." Said owner Peter Kamranos when asked about the firing of Ron Francis. When asked what his aspirations were with the team for the upcoming season, and if he would make immediate changes to the roster, the new Carolina Hurricanes gm Dale Degray had this to say, "This team has quite a few good pieces and I feel like we don't need to make any changes immediately. I will give it a few weeks to gauge the situation before I make any brash decisions."

I played as the devils for around 12 years. Missed the playoffs the first year and won 7 cups from what I remember. I got pretty lucky drafting wise though. Drafted a 98 overall in the third round in 2016. At one point he won the scoring title 3 years in a row.

Im playing as Minnesota and I just realized that I pretty much built my team off of the suffering of Toronto.

At some point the Leafs acquired Vladislav Kamenev from Nashville, he was progressing quite nicely after a year and he was rated around 83, if I recall correctly. His trade value was very low though and I traded Jason Zucker for him in the off season.

The Leafs drafted Brett Howden, but I guess they were at the contract limit, because they never signed him. He was already rated in the 80's and I figured I'd give him a year in Iowa before letting him audition for an NHL job.

Well, Howden jumped the whole way up to 89 overall between free agency and preseason, so he obviously wasn't going to Iowa. Kamenev was already a regular at around 87 overall.

Fast forward a couple of years and Kamenev is rated 90 and Howden is rated 93. They're being centered by 92 overall Auston Matthews, who I shamelessly tanked for.

That line is insane, they've all hit 100 points. I've had plenty of good lines in Be A GM, but it's funny to see one assembled through mostly dumb luck.

Where are all the Franchise modes lol! I have too ask if anyone has seen any sure fire prospects or youngins already in the nhl that seem to always grow? Matthew Tkachuck has low trade value but always seems to grow, same as Gudbranson!
