Post-Game Talk: Battle of Ontario the Sequel - 6-2 win -- Game 1

Spent the morning dog walk listening to Sens podcasts.

Lots of delicious tears on the refs only to acknowledge later far too much undisciplined play.

Holding on to advanced stats as "a win" even though last I looked the Sens still got outscored 5v5.

Bit of denial on Ulmark being weak although acceptance that he didn't get them saves on high danger chances while Stolarz did.

Criticism of Chabot getting burned on both the first two goals.

Like the greatest statistical player in NHL history said

Did he played bad though?

OEL walked into the slot uncontested
MM scored on a breakaway
Nobody even touched JT after he won the faceoff and he had two chances on goal 5-7feet from the crease.
Willie’s shot was just filthy
Reilly’s goal was a bounce that won’t happened again.
Knies goal was just a battle lost in front of the net.

He didn’t play great but don’t think he played bad.

Stolarz gave them an absolute gift on the 1st goal and I doubt Domi, JT & Rielly could be as sloppy next game with giveaways.

I felt through the first half of the game, Ottawa had a chance to be in it and became undisciplined.

Leafs will get better.

Awesome to get the win! Playoff games are a lot less stressful when you're facing 0.750 goaltending instead of 0.950 goaltending, lol.

Ottawa was kind of like us in game 1 last year; running around like idiots trying to prove they're tough guys, instead of trying to win the game. Was nice to get the calls for once. There was some concerning play, especially 5v5, and we can't get complacent based on a game where pretty much everything went in our favour, but winning game 1 is big, and a game like this should help our team, core, goalie, and PP gain momentum.

Some of the things Ottawa did would be suspendable if we did them, but what else is new.

Onto game 2. Hopefully another win.

The breakaway and the big save on Pinto when it was 2-1 were huge.

After that when it got to 4-1 you can pretty much throw out what happened. They rolled 4 lines and limited Tanev and McCabes mins
Another classic Mo moment, guy doesn’t inspire any defensive acumen…….

yeah for sure we all know Marner had been trash and just be leafs MVP all year long by being carrying by everyone else, we all know
So... your complaining about Robertson being easily knocked over... but that same criticism doesn't apply to Marner because he put up 100 points 🤔

We had quality chances but his job is to make saves on quality chances like we saw from Stolarz.

Realistically that OEL goal was weak and you likely want another save or two from the rest of the bunch.

Whether it's being taller on the Marner shot, swallowing the original JT rebound, not cheating the onetimer on Willy or tracking the Mo Deflection. I think you're expecting another save or two from that bunch

Had TSN Ottawa on this morning it just kept building, by the time it was over at 10 and a few guests they generally believed the Sens had dominated other than a few soft calls and not terrible, but average goaltending. learn something new everyday i guess. I thought the Sens were kept mostly to the outside and Stolarz was good but didn't have to be great. They didn't threaten that much. Seems around here at least the leafs were lucky and helped tremendously by officiating. head scratching

I missed the end of the 2nd and start of the 3rd. Everything else seemed like it was Leafs that were better. Even strength and special teams. Shot totals don’t tell you everything, we know what we give teams. Sens could have made it a close game if they weren’t so undisciplined, but I have a hard time seeing how Ottawa was better 5-on-5.

Certainly seems to me like Green let his team off the hook with his post game comments. Loser mentality; and we should know, we saw it plenty with Keefe.

Definitely expect Sens will be better in game 2 but so will we. Let’s lock down 2-0
In fairness, what do you expect him to say? Other than some bad penalties and questionable goaltending I though they held their own. Regardless of being vastly inferior don’t forget they owned the Leafs in the regular season, that wasn’t a fluke. Gard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard…….

Not sure what you’re remembering. It was pretty unanimous around here last offseason that most people believed we needed a hell of a lot more from the core guys.

Obviously a calamity of injuries set us back significantly last year.

I still maintain if Nylander & Matthews were able to play the whole series, we would have won against that Bruins team.
IF’s and BUT’s, that arguement never gets old……..

Let it go man, stop fretting, things will bounce back in time, if you don’t need the money immediately it’s just a blip……..
Market corrections have a very big impact on my business. That is the bigger issue for me.

I really don't know what ottawa fans are complaining about when it comes to the refs. We've had a player suspended almost every year. Kadri, bunting, Clifford. Grieg won't even get a fine lol

No control, no accountability. If you can fix the problem do it, if you can’t, don’t sweat it is all I’m saying. Worrying about what might happen is a fools venture, plan for the worst, hope for the best…….

I don't worry. I've been anticipating this for a while, especially in Canada. I worked through the 2000 collapse and the 2008/2009 collapse. There is a generation today that has no idea what a real crash is like.

Alot more solid on his feet than Marner lol.
I would get the reflex to cast doubt over Reilly's play, but it's hackneyed now to do so with Marner this season and from last night's play.

As Leafs fans, we have a duty towards objective criticism, and the one defining criticism for Marner has been his value balanced against his goal output, especially in the playoffs. But he scored this time. Game 2 might provide legitimate ammo, but Game 1 didn't. What Game 1 provided was:
  • Establishing a lead at home.
  • Maintaining the lead with great goaltending and with emphatic response when the opposition scored.
  • Discipline while Ottawa took dumb penalties and maximizing opportunity on special teams
  • Contributions up and down the lineup while absorbing Ottawa's shenanigans.
  • Confidence in the Coach's ability to line match and respond with the right message at the right time.
  • Going up 1-0 in the series and continuing momentum from the regular season results.
These are all VERY positive indicators, mindful there are a few moments where momentum could have shifted the other way. But they were few and far between and our responses demonstrated discipline.

I don't know, man...Doesn't this all (including Marner) feel a bit different to you?

I'm pointing out the hypocritical analysis. If you don't like that a player is falling all over the ice... than it should go across the board.

The things that pain me about Marner...pain me about any player.

I hate Marners soft play, I equally hate Nylanders soft play. Though, Nylander can fight off players because of his strength.

I'd love to comment on whether this feels different but I'll do that in a separate post.

Mitch and Willy with big make your space and execute star power goals. That's the recipe, Stolie and the d corps lock will down the home fort.

Benny needs more love for his 'Welcome to Toronto' hit on Cozens. That was a great start.

Great win.

Lots of positives. Very few negatives. We have to expect a better, and more disciplined Sens team tomorrow. We just cannot expect to be +4 in the PP differential every game.

All that said, I loved our physicality and willingness to hunt pucks. Top to bottom, it looked like we were ready to pay the physical price. Berube style of hockey in the regular season can often times be hard to get up for I am sure, but it really looked like all 18 guys on the ice were committed to playing the right way last night.

We need to have that same urgency for game 2. Often times we have seen this team pat themselves on the back after moments like this, instead of ramping it up. We need to be all gas no brakes. If we take both at home, we really only need to have a split in OTT to take this series by the short and curly's.

Time to nut up, and play like men tmw.

Solid start, just need 15 more like that
