Confirmed with Link: Barry Trotz out as coach - Hired in Washington

With the news that the decision to replace Trotz happened awhile ago, wouldn't it have been interesting if the late season hot streak actually got us into the playoffs?

Would they still have fired him??

yeah, especially if they had won a series or two...

so, Poile said korn has no contract? did he say that they were working to re-sign him?

I hate how Poile talks about our roster... He always acts like the current roster is "enough"

Actually his talking for most of the year has been that the forwards haven't been enough, but he is a GM who is now on a seat so hot I can feel the heat down here in Shelbyville. It doesn't surprise me that he would try and put a positive spin on things.

Trotz is an awesome man, and while I may agree that its time for him to go, that doesn't mean I don't think alot of him and what he did for this team. Its always hard to let a good man go, but I think it was time for him and the organization. Whether it is now or another 5 years from now, this day was quickly approaching, you can only coach for so long, especially in one city.

While I have zero to back it up, I believe that the reason he has known it for a while is that he and Poile have probably butted heads this season behind the scenes. While I don't think they are the best players in the world, his handling of Stalberg, MDZ, and just his general decisions on lines and things may have rubbed Poile the wrong way. Lets face it, how many times has Poile went out and got more offensive type players, only to watch them scratched or buried on bottom lines? Its happened several times over the years, and I think after Poile went out and got a certain type of player for Trotz this offseason and it didn't work, he thought it was time.

I think when you look at the type of player Poile has been trying to get lately ( outside of the couple of FA signings), they are mostly players that I think would work better in a different system. While I don't think most of them will be world beaters, I do think guys like Wilson, Smith, Jankrok, Forsberg, Stalberg, etc. can do better under someone else.

While I'm not sure things get better next season, or even the one after, I do think its time. Poile is definitely on the way out if this team fails again next year, there is absolutely no one else to sacrifice to the owners but himself now.

He also thought we had the pieces to get there this year. (PlayOffs) nhl

He's right. Missed it by 3 points. Rinne healthy all year and they would have been a playoff team.

Keep in mind, as was stated earlier, over 50% of NHL teams make the playoffs. IMO not a huge goal to set. Should be to win the Cup or bust.

Personally, I think Poile's press conference is jarring. He admits injuries blew a hole in us and that Barry is great... and didn't lose the team.... but we needed a change. No rationale given. Uh-oh #1

Then he notes that Mitch Korn isn't under contract because MK wants to see what happens with Barry. Uh-oh #2.

Then he papers over our team to basically say everything is fine and we have a bright future with the current roster and upcoming kids.... like Austin Watson. "We nearly made the playoffs and then anything can happen." Wow. Uh-oh #3.

When asked, he said it was a combination of things but the only two rationales stated: 1. Phoenix series, which "off ice issues" distracted from the fact we lost a winnable series. 2. Erat asked for a trade. Holy mother@#$#%$. Ok, now he has added "inconsistency"....

Lambert and Housley are under contract but "that won't be a problem" for the next coach.

"Forwards are getting better"... "thinks we are close".... "capable of making playoffs, not looking past that step".... I can't listen any more.

I hear ya, but I would't put too much stock in it- any GM in this situation will be in "GM-SPEAK" mode.........

I rolled my eyes at some of the things he said, but also agreed with many of his comments.......

disagree about the goal comment, I thought he said it was the minimum that had to be met.

we're a franchise team, first owner screwed us, we almost lost the team, operated on a shoestring for a couple of years......sigh. But we're still here :D

Here is the thing though, when you back slide like this ( and it probably isn't over yet) you can't just all or nothing it like you did a couple of years ago. As an organization at this moment your goal is to at least get back to the playoffs, with a much broader goal of doing more than that. However, the organization should not be content with just getting there and being one and done every season. Through this stretch with Trotz, that is the one major fault I have had with the team overall. It really did appear that they were happy with just making it, and while they wanted to make that next step, they were pretty content with things.

As an organization you should always strive for more, and at least for next season, more would at least be in the playoffs, as sad as that might be.

Im pretty sure this boils down to ownership made this call, not Poile.

I am a bit surprised that Poile didnt tell them to shove it and leave himself.

the only reason I can see Poile hanging around in a bad situation is to keep his son in a job...

That said, its obvious from the MDZ situation that Poile and Trotz no longer see eye to eye, so someone had to go.

Trotz was asked by one of the media (Darren McFarland) if things would have changed and would he have still been here If said that had we made the playoffs and that he believes he would have still been here!

I think you are probably right, I've said for a while I didn't think Poile would pull the trigger on Trotz, and tbh I didn't think he would even if ownership told him too.

From an ownership perspective, you have sliding STH sales, and a team that has missed the playoffs two years in a row. Now you know you want to make a change, but just how big? You know if you toss the GM its pretty much a full blown change, coaches will be gone, players will be gone, etc. However if you feel like the players are somewhat ok ( Rinne, defense, and a couple of the younger forwards) then the first move is not to toss the whole. A coaching change is generally the first try at a reboot, if it doesn't work then you nail the GM.

While we all may agree that Poile needs to go, its hard to argue that doing something that just completely blows things up may not be the best route at this point. That said, the next step will be a GM change.

well, to be technical, of course he would... the season would last another two weeks if we had made the playoffs...

it sounds like this decision was made back when it appeared obvious that we were out of it, and our little surge at the end of the season almost upset the applecart.

Said they would talk in a couple of weeks ....I guess after things settle down a little.

If you watch the Trotz presser (and you better have tissues) you will see Barry break down when he mentions Korn. Apparently they are best friends ... this leads me to think Korn is likely to follow Trotz to his next position.

The answer I would love to have though is did the players suddenly start pouring it on because they knew he was gone ( ding dong the witch is dead mentality) , if it was because he knew he was gone and just let them play more open, or if it was because the guys wanted to try and save things?

May be something we never know, but it does make for interesting conversation.

From Poile's press conference, I got the same feeling. He said Mitch wanted to wait until everything was said and done with Trotz and see where he ended up and then he would talk to Poile. I believe that baring something drastically changing that Mitch Korn will follow Trotz to wherever he is going to next.
Which sucks for the Preds more than anything!!

Meanwhile, I gained a lot of respect for Poile watching this presser...

He mentions the Radulov/playoff faux pas... (meanwhile, so much for Radulov and a multitude of Kostitsyns. Not like they've impacted hockey and/or the NHL since.)

He mentions Erat wanting out... (well, how has that worked out Marty? You crapped the bed in Washington, and went to Phoenix where you helped them miss the playoffs.)

He does mention Austin Watson, but also mentions Jarnkrok, Forsberg, Leipsic, and Pontus Aberg... while some of this may stock the AHL for another year or two, there's certainly some of it that IS going to be a big plus for the Preds.

He talked about 3 points, (2 shoot out wins)... (actually 3 ;) )... and he talked about 5 forwards...

1. Nystrom... MINUS 25. Sure he scored 15 goals, but on a team where only four guys were in double digit minus, that just stands out as being unacceptable. Throw in that he was -19 at home, and only -6 on the road.

2. Bourque... In two seasons prior, he played 77 games for the Preds, and potted 18 goals. That number was cut in half this season. More was certainly expected.

3. Stalberg... My personal whipping boy was terrible from top to bottom. For all his hoopla, he proved that he couldn't play in the top 6 or the bottom 6. You can blame Trotz all you want, but it would be easy to put together a 20 minute highlight reel of Stalberg fanning, whiffing, shanking shots, and flubbing passes and missing assignments along the boards. That you can't blame on a coach.

4. Hornqvist... Poile mentions 40 game stretch where he had just one ESG. You want to blame Trotz? I think not. Cold as ice when it mattered most.

5. Wilson... four or five times in an 82 game season he shone brightly. In today's NHL, that is roughly 75 times too little. Guy looks like a world beater on occasion, but too many nights you forget he was even on the ice.

and, lest you think I'm going to heap praise on Cluner... he too had a really disappointing season, but I do know that he performed his role as he was asked, and towards the end of the season was allowed to kill a few penalties. He's defensively as responsible a guy as this team has, but of course his skill set does limit said effectivity. He'd hardly be the reason this team didn't succeed... with or without Barry Trotz.

I guess at this point the best we can hope for is that Trotz chooses to take the management job and Korn stays? Ugh hate to lose him more than Trotz tbh :p:

I think the best we can hope for is that Korn doesn't want to leave Nashville nor his Finnish protege ... I would be beyond shocked if Trotz takes a front office job in the next 10 years. He'll be bench boss again soon ... likely within the next 10 days.

Not really confident with Poile's ability to right this ship. Said he noticed a problem after the Phoenix series but then you just have to shake your head at least offseason's signings. And will all due respect to Seth Jones, who I think will be great, Poile said he was #1 on our draft board. And we are still targeting defensive, gritty players in the draft.

To be fair on the Jones drafting, he was #1 on most experts' draft boards. Very unlikely Poile ever dreamed he would fall to 4, and when he did, he had no choice but to take him (even had he not felt he was #1).

One thing you can be assured of when it comes to DP on draft day. HE WILL ALWAYS DRAFT THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE from his scouting sheets. Jones was ranked im most everyones mind 1 or 2. And at the end of the compaired to the top 5 from this draft he would place second behind Mac on performance this season in value added to the team they play for. If The Preds had the third pick last year and Jones was there the outcome would have been the same.

So do some of our STH's still have an excuse not to renew? Or does Poile have to go as well?

I think you will probably see things get better on that front, but if Poile is around I think it will take the offseason and seeing what he does before it gets much better.

I think both being gone probably would have seen things spike, hard to say with just Trotz gone.

Personally I have not renewed in 3 years. And the reason is the team is just not built to seriously compete for a deep playoff run. I define that as at least winning one round. To expect more than that year after year minus generational talent on the forward side is just not sensible. That said if the team has a legit top 6 and hit the playoffs with a hot goalie anything can happen.

If the GM goes out and signs a legit 1st line I am prepared tomorrow to purchase full season tickets. I refuse to plunk that kind of coin out to see whats been on the ice the last two years for sure.

I guess I'm the exception to the rule ... sure, I want a winner; but I love the sport and I'll continue to renew as long as I am physically and financially able.
