Barracuda News & Discussion VII

And Rem Pitlick cuts the lead to 1 on the power play! 4-3 with five minutes to go. Gushchin, again, with the primary assist.

This third period has been all Barracuda, but we still need one more goal and Villalta has been standing on his head for Tucson.

Yamamoto with the empty netter, 5-3, and then Ben McCartney adds another, so 6-3 Tucson, final.

I love how they rebuilt my hope in this game and then let me down again.

We sent out the Vanroboys line and Hache to send them a message at the final buzzer.

One less pest to deal with

I mentioned that we sent Vanroboys, Hache, etc out at the end of yesterday’s game which resulted in a bunch of altercations after the buzzer. Two misconducts on each side (Vanroboys and Hache for us, Barron and Connauton for them, all for “continuing altercation”) and then also a physical abuse of the official misconduct on Onyebuchi.

I never saw video of it, but for once trying to send a message at the end of the game had some real consequences.

Edit: Just found it on Reddit actually. It’s around the 55 second mark, Onyebuchi (#79) in right corner:

Kind of a bad break as the puck goes right to McCartney who’s wide open by the post. Tie game again.

But, another Cuda PPG, this time Regenda (or Poturalski). Lot of penalties, lot of goals so far. 3-2 SJ.

Sabourin and Drew drop the gloves for a quick fight, Sabourin was really heated, took an extra penalty.

Three misconducts during all that, too. Vanroboys (SJ) and Barron/Drew (TUC). Thought Sabourin got one too but nope.

3-2 Cuda after one. SJ are 3 for 3 on the power play thus far. Barracuda/Roadrunners games, at least they’re rarely dull.

Tie game. We really decided to make that tough on ourselves. Went down 5 on 3. Second time this weekend we went down 5 on 3 with a delay of game.

OT.

I think my biggest hope for the off-season, aside from Grier improving the Sharks roster, is getting a new coach for the Barracuda. Winning breeds winning and it’s important to have this team be consistently successful. Barring Grier trading any of our top prospects for immediate help, we could have all of Chernyshov, Musty, Haltunnen and Lund ect.. as rookies on this team next year. Maybe Havelid and Pohlkamp as well. I think the need for a veteran coach with more than two years experience is vital. Not sure if the decision to hire McCarthy was a Grier behind the scenes decision before they announced his hiring or purely a Joe Will decision but it was bad at the time and just as bad now imo. He had absolutely zero experience as a head coach at any level at all and had no business being named head coach at the professional level. Whether they promote a long time CHL/USHL/NCAA/AHL coach or whatever, something needs to be done to bring in an experienced hire.

This team is absolutely loaded with talent but I’m just amazed how we keep crumpling when the other team turns up the pressure. I do not feel like we’re as ready to play as we should be half the time.

We’ll go to the playoffs I’m sure, and on paper I feel like we match up well against anyone, but my hopes in postseason success are very, very low at the moment.

Since the Barracuda seem like they're going to limp their way to the end of the season, here's what we're looking at:

1st place seems like it's going to be out of reach. Colorado is on fire right now and are ten points ahead of us. 1st place is the only position that receives a bye, so the rest of this season is probably just going to be jockeying for first round position and hoping that Bakersfield doesn't go on a run.

To that end, we have two games against Bakersfield this weekend, that's a pretty good chance to drive a stake into them. Or to let them back into the race.

Abbotsford's overtaken Calgary, who is falling down the division at a crazy rate. We might be able to jump over them too the way this is going. Calgary has won two of their 14 games since February began. At one point they looked like the team to beat in the Pacific, now they're fifth.

Our schedule the rest of the month: SD, @BAK, BAK, @ SD, ABB, ABB. And then in April it's eight games against teams in the top 5. Me personally, I'm just hoping we can take 4th. We'd at least have home ice in the first round then.
