GDT: Bald Headed Scallywags @ Raleighwood: Caps @ Canes (7pm)

I gotta stay off the Caps board. There is an idiot on there that said "That punk 22 to the pushed Willy was risking his career"

I would love to put that video up so he could see what really happened is that punk ass bitch Wilson (6'4" 220) cross checked from behind after the whistle 5'11" 191 Walker, and than got thrown to the ice by 5'8" 165 Stank.

Curious to hear what the talking heads are saying about this game on XM this morning, but I won't be available to listen. Canes put on a clinic last night against arguably the "best" team in the league, and it should be recognized as such. This was a measuring stick game, make no mistake, and the Canes were more than up to the task. Let me know if anyone gets to hear any commentary.
According tnt guys in between chic.-avs, DC team was on a back to back and had nothing to play for. Also, Ovie great and chatty bad.

To revisit the Chatfield thing, here’s Wilson doing something very similar to Panarin.

Around 3:10 in the video shows the best angle. You may recall that Wilson escaped suspension for this (he was fined $5000 for pushing Buch into the ice earlier in the scrum), but it caused the Rangers to specifically call out the DOPS for not taking the safety of the players seriously.

And I get it: Tempers were high, Chatfield was provoked, and neither player are exactly known for their fighting skills, but the fact remains that Chatfield violently slammed an opposing player’s head to the ice, having knocked off his helmet earlier in the scrum. That could have easily led to a MUCH worse outcome.

Given that it’s the DOPS, there’s no telling what (if any) consequences may come down, but I don’t think it’s right to handwash it away by coming up with excuses for Chatfield, claiming it’s “old school hockey” or “whataboutism” with regards to the Caps and Wilson. It’s very easy to say “Hey, that was a dangerous move by Chatfield. He could have cracked a skull open. He should probably face some kind of punishment for it.”

I think a fine is realistic. You are right it was v ery dangerous but you got to take those situations into consideration. In the NY Wilson was the aggressor from the start. In Chatty's case guess what Wilson was the aggressor from the start. He started running his mouth as soon as they were down a few goals and playing weak. Im I am not mistaken Bouch said he clearly told the Canes bench "someone is getting hurt tonight" and that was well before there were many hard hits even given so there was no reason for him to start shit other than he thought he could bully the Canes.

I get it, it was a bad move and he shouldn't escape punishment, but this whole thing came from Wilson being allowed to take runs at guys on the Canes with the pure intent to hurt and intimidate.

You can only scold someone so much when they have few other options to defend themselves because you (The refs in this case) let it get to that

Grain of salt as I only watched end of the 2nd and 3rd after putting my kid to bed and doing some work.

Don't read much into this one. Wash was on a back-to-back with travel. Yeah, we pantsed them and it wasn't close, but if there was ever a write-off game, this was the one. They have #1 in the Metro pretty much locked up. I guess it was a measuring stick game against us but most of the Caps have been to the playoffs many times and know that this stretch of games isn't meaningful.

Washington 100% ****ed around and found out tonight. Total goon behavior for the entirety of the 3rd. Embarrassing. That kind of play gets you quickly eliminated from the playoffs, so let's hope the Canes can get under their skin if we get there in the 2nd round. The Chatfield play was dirty, but McMichael provoked him 2 or 3 times to fight when Chat clearly didn't want to. The take-down also occurred after several crosschecks and punches thrown by the Caps. I'm not excusing Chat's behavior, but again, FAAFO.

Kudos to the depth players of our team stepping up and matching physicality. We aren't the 1970s Flyers but we have way more toughness than the rest of the league gives us credit for having. Stankoven is afraid of no one and parks in front of the net. Kotkaniemi immediately jumps into scrums and tries to separate players from fighting and will get in there himself. He didn't have that toughness a few years ago. Jankowski feels like he's been a career Cane. His line with Jost and Robinson looked strong offensively and also all three of those guys will mix it up. The team will get a further injection of toughness with Staal and Carrier.

I'm not worried about Washington's toughness (IFFFF we get there) because if they're gooning it up, we're getting powerplays.

Here I go, reading too much into this one. One game doesn't make us a better team than Washington. But the positives are that Blake is going, the 4th line is going, and most importantly, our powerplay actually looks dangerous out there.

Definitely not the game to proclaim we are better than the Caps. However, I think we are pretty even with them and match up well against them. I mean much like 2019's playoffs so far each team has won their home games.

Oh, I agree the refs were the main cause of this. I’m assuming they believed tossing Wilson and Stankoven (for some reason?) would have ended it, but clearly they misread the situation of the game. Especially after giving Washington a PP after that Wilson/Stankoven exchange (IIRC)

If Chatfield gets fined, ok. If Dundon or RBA doesn't write the check, we should pass a hat.
If Chatfield sits some games, that's actually not a bad problem at all. As someone else said, it gives Morrow some more time. In either case, Chatfield has to be careful if he plays the next Washington game as they will surely be gunning for him.

yeah, can't say we're better after this game but if they meet in the 2nd round neither team should be considered a heavy favorite. Regardless of what happens on Thursday.

They all need to be hyper aware because Wilson is going to try and take someones head off. Be it Chatfield if he's playing or someone else if he's not.

A Reddit link is the best I can do:

Seriously. I am saying this out of character.

Thanks for sharing, I did actually see this one though. I just didn’t expect “Muh Code” crowd would lose shit because of a crosscheck from behind that us a retalliation to a crosscheck from behind.

ON A SIDE NOTE.

WILSON CAN’T GET A CONCUSSION… YOU NEED A BRAIN FOR THAT.

Also, I hope OV breaks the record before our next game against them. There was SO much extra work and pressure last night, between the WRAL simulcast, the two local broadcasts, and the two sets of TNT broadcasts. And that’s without the added Bettman wrinkle on top of it.
I hope he gets a stroke and doesn’t. Solves all issues.

Just kidding… I wish him a good old regular season-ending injury.

I slept on it before responding, but the announcing/analysis of this game was abysmal, especially towards the physicality of it.

1. Tom Wilson: I was waiting for a commentator/analyst to say “maybe Tom Wilson should worry more about getting pucks in the net rather under the Hurricanes’ skin” but it just…. never happened (not that I saw anyway). Announcers seemed to revel in telling us about Wilson threatening injury to the Canes, but when Aho spun off of him and accidentally/on purpose gave him a love tap acted like Canes were out with intent to injure.

Dude ran his mouth the whole game and when he finally linked up with someone it was a 5’8” rookie that held his own. Chicken shit behavior the whole game by Wilson that seemed to be celebrated by the studio.

We’ve been told to wait until Wilson makes someone pay…well, he had the whole game to do it.

2. Candy Canes: The waffling between “The Hurricanes don’t want to play this way” and “That was a dirty play…I don’t like that” was dizzying. One minute we’re the Candy Canes and literally the next we’re the Blue Ride Parkway bullies. Make up your damn mind. Overall, we don’t play that way, but the team doesn’t lack team toughness. Caps instigated what, 80% of the rough stuff last night? Canes didn’t mind answering.

I didn’t particularly like the Chatfield takedown but don’t think the perfect leg/hip sweep was on purpose, but again he didn’t start it. When 4-6 fights/scrums get instigated at some point something bad is gonna happen. And for those calling for him to be suspended, what rule did he break? Is there a rule detailing appropriate takedowns in a fight? Slewfoot is the only thing I can think of but not sure how that applies during a fight.

Ayywho, f*** Edzo….dumbest f***ing nickname

I imagine it would apply similarly to how it applies to the rest of the game: Super dangerous and very against the rules. And able to be reviewed by the league even if nothing was called on the play.

Re: Chatty’s Steven Seagal-esque takedown.

As a non-hockey player/fighter, hard for me to assess how “dirty” it was or not.

But honestly, this league has broken me over the years. I frankly don’t give a damn lol. We need certified A-HOLES (at least part time ones anyway) to survive in this league, because of the uneven enforcement. Jost—and now Chatty— have shown the willingness to go into that gray area and I commend them. Kill or be killed, I guess.

Enough with the hand wringing. Dude was fine. DOPS doesn't care. If you want fighting out of the game, stop cheering when guys fight. The End.

Yea, as many times as I've seen our guys being sat on and having their heads smacked into the ice, hits from behind, blindside hits, dangerous takedowns by the boards, elbows, etc and it RARELY even resulting in a 2 min penalty, f*** it. We've suffered lots of injuries over the years from dangerous hits that got flat-out ignored by the league. One "questionable" takedown in a sea of bullshit shouldn't warrant a second thought, especially when it wasn't intentional (unlike Wilson literally saying he's going to injure someone) and more just reactionary. Honestly the league should be investigating Wilson for criminal charges if he's "threatening" to injure players.
