Bad General Managers

lol. That is like giving Snow credit for picking Tavares.

Right, but you don't understand; Chiarelli DRAFTED McDavid. Snow only drafted Tavares. It's not how you draft a player, it's the way you draft them. See what I'm trying to say? But Snow also DRAFTED Tavares, no doubt about that. They're different players and different GM's who are the same in their own way, know what I mean?

Nailed it

Garth gets a lot of flack, but he has come out ahead on several big trades: Ryan Smyth, Nick Leddy, Johnny Boychuck, Matt Barzal, Anthony Beauvillier, and even Cal Clutterbuck would qualify as at least being a wash.

Yes, his top 5 drafting (which is not all on him) leaves some to be desired, he has made good trades, and he should make more soon... even before the season starts.

Mike Milbury... didn't do much of anything right.

Peter Chiarelli... wow! OK, a Stanley Cup and. Runner-up, but personnel-wise, he's traded Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin, Matt Barzal, Anthony Beauvillier, acquired Griffin Reinhart, who, at the age of 22, still can't start a season in the NHL.

Mike Milbury had merit in Boston, then lost it with the Islanders. Peter Chiarelli had merit with Boston, and he's not looking so hot in Edmonton, though, trading Seguin was a crime committed in Boston.

I'm going to go ahead and say that Peter Chiarelli is proving to be a bad GM. MIke Milbury's resume screams it at you.

Garth Snow, to me, trades well. I think he needs a better coach and better amateur scouts, but I don't think he's a bad GM.

Milbury was an awful GM and there's no doubt about that. However he was a better drafter than Snow (he just dumped them for nothing).

Say what you like about Chiarelli but the Oilers are better with Lucic + Larsson than they were with Hall.

I'm watching the Oilers game right now. Lucic looks like Brett Lindros out there. Big, stiff, hands like cinder blocks. He ever scored on himself, so he's got some Scott LaChance in him, too!

Garth Snow because he still hasn't found proper support for Tavares, made a decision over who's the starting goalie or gotten us a good coach.

Garth's biggest mistake is not tanking twice to guarantee a second cornerstone player. This could have been Hall or Seguin. Could have been one of the better d-men options in 2008. Could have been Landeskog or Larsson in 2011. If you don't get that, you have to nail the picks from the lower tier. These picks: Bailey, Niederreiter, Strome, Reinhart, Pulock, Dal Colle, Barzal. Include Nelson and Tito if you want. At this point none of them have turned stars and you can either blame coaching/development or drafting, or both.

In any case, every single powerhouse today, aside from LA (who has done an exceptional job of drafting and trading and managing) has gone with the double tank.

You know it when you see it.

Unfortunately we have been watching one for a decade

My hope is that new owners bring new culture. Nothing good came out of last night. An aggressive move has to be made to get Tavares a qualified winger. I'm looking to trade Strome and Nelson right now. No reason to wait.

Who is available now? We said no to Kessel, we said no to Hall (which, to be fair, required Hamonic and would have left a huge hole at RD), said no to Drouin, and we said no to Yakupov (who might actually be good, surprise surprise, but we'll see). There's no indication that JVR is available and he'd probably be traded out west if he was (to Anaheim?).

We've been demanding wingers for Tavares for years but every time one enters trade discussion he's either not good enough or it's a bad fit, and I don't see much out there right now.
