Last year Montreal went with a three ring circus in net with Montembeault, Allen and Primeau. They didn’t want to send Primeau down because they assumed that someone would pick him up on waivers. The eventually traded Jake Allen.
That has proven to be a mistake as Cayden Primeau is statistically the worst goalie in the NHL this year. 4.70 GAA and a .836 save percentage in 11 games this year.
Montembeault just played in his third game in four nights. That is too much for a goalie to handle unless it is the playoffs and then both teams are doing it. They need a reliable backup. Primeau has pretty much proved that he is not capable.
Looking back in hindsight Jake Allen should not have been traded and it would have solved this whole issue but that is in the past and nothing can be done to change it.
Montreal have Jakub Dobes in the AHL who has been great this year with a 2.44 GAA and a .910 save percentage through 14 games. They also have Jacob Fowler in the NCAA who has a 1.73 GAA and a .933 save percentage through 15 games. It looks like help is on the way but not here for a while yet.
What teams have a sound back up goalie available? If need be the Habs could just wait and see who hits waivers and claim them for free. They are also not looking for a goalie with a big salary or lots of term. Just some goalie who would give Montreal a chance to win some games.
