Leave Bäckström alone!

I'm disappointed to see the overwhelming majority believes "he should have known"

Whatever dose he took, he shouldn't have been suspended for it, common sense needs to factor in, regardless of how much backstrom should have known

Dissapointing that you can destroy a guys dreams for what amounts to forgetting to signal on a lane change

So if he put down on a piece of paper that he was taking this drug it's just a warning

Where does common sense factor in?

There is no common sense, guy played doped first 5 games including semis. His team got away with it. No penalty or compensation given, hockey is the only sports your result in olympics wont be affected when doping.

Ps haven't people learn from that lance armstrong thing ? everyone and their mother defended him, yet the truth was shockingly evident from the start (not accusing backstrom by any means)

Except you are, in bringing up that example as if it's relevant.

To me, it really doesn't seem like he was doping, just a mistake with allergy meds. If I was in charge, I would have let him play, but the IOC tends to be pretty strict with these things. I doubt he would have changed the outcome of the game, but he should have been allowed to play.

Yeah, sorry, it doesn't work like that.

Common sense says that an athlete at the Olympics should be very careful and cautious of the amount of regulated substance they are putting in their bodies knowing drug testing is lurking around pretty much every corner :)

Say what? There's only one person ultimately responsible for what goes in your own body.

He should have known...and someone else's job should have been to make sure the players were only taking approved things and approved doses.

Especially when it's heavily documented that NHL players take pseudo ephedrine before a hockey game for an advantage, knowing that the NHL doesn't test for PED's.

If you know there is a limit, then you shouldn't take 3 to 4 times the recommended dose. That's if he took that much Zyrtec which would make him drowsy anyways.

Eh, this is a very silly mentality. Athletes are generally militant about what they put in their bodies. They are and should be aware of what is and isn't allowed, and if they aren't entirely, they should have trained medical staff on their teams that outline it for them. Backstrom should have been aware, and if he wasn't, his team doctors should have checked on his behalf and made sure.

This was a failing from bottom to top on behalf of the Swedish team. Backstrom was let down by himself and his medical trainers.

—Jari Kurri, the respected 17-year veteran right winger of the Colorado Avalanche, says some of the dirty play in recent years might be a result of players having had something more than the usual competitive juices flowing through their systems. He suggests a link between the use of pseudoephedrine and the increasing lack of respect NHL players have shown each other in this decade. "You take it, you get hyped up," says Kurri, who also says that he took Sudafed once before a game last season when he was with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. "I don't know if the stickwork, the dirty hits, are because of that, but I think it's something the league should look into."

Kurri = doper. Return your SC-rings cheater!

IOC broke its own rules by not alerting team Sweden about this within 48 hours of the urine sample.

Let's ban them from the biggest moments of their lives... Which, let's face it, probably is seeing people's dreams crumble before their eyes.

I doubt the overwhelming majority feels this way.

Just the majority of people still posting about it because people like me (who think the IOC massively screwed up) are tired of arguing with the people calling out Backstrom and Team Sweden when the IIHF knew of and approved of his medicine taking and its dosage and said this punishment was not appropriate.

Shouldn't that be ug/ml = mg/l. ( the answer to the question is yes but I don't use emotions)

If we're talking water, mg/L = mg/kg. I'm not sure how true that holds for blood, but considering urine is mostly water it would seem to be reasonable accurate.

To sum up the last thread:
- he took a known medicine
- he was over the limit
- he either took too many pills or took something extra along with it (which both the Finnish and Swedish anti-doping bosses suggest)
- he may get only a warning or a two year ban from competition (IOC/IIHF)
- Finns are trolling the Swedes
- Swedes are falling for it
- NHL has very loose anti-doping standards
- NHL/NHLPA are throwing hissyfits to distract everyone from the above.

Nicklas Backstrom is a guy who registers a blank beyond being the subdued-to-the-public setup man for OV in Washington for most people, so they view him more kindly than they would have had a "rougher" guy been the one caught, such as Komarov.

I brought that example because i'm from France (tour de France fan) and i didn't need any urine sample to know that armstrong was doping from day one, when i saw him !!

When i see backstrom, i don't feel that way, that's all man
