I believe only if it interferes with the puck, puck carrier or other opposition player. Players clear sticks away all the time. This is really no different.

Rule 10.3 tells us that, "A player who has lost or broken his stick may only receive a stick at his own players' bench or be handed one from a teammate on the ice. A player will be penalized if he throws, tosses, slides or shoots a stick to a teammate on the ice."

It should have been a penalty but it was a slick move.

Well to be fair he did not throw, toss, slide or shoot his stick, he flipped it.

Throw = overhand with your hand/arm

Toss = underhand with your hand/arm

Slide = move with your stick along the ice

Shoot = slide but not necessarily along the ice

Toss applies in this instance.

Toss - verb

"to throw (something) with a quick, light motion"

You don't HAVE to throw something with your arms for it to still be a "toss".

IDK, the rule is worded in a way that leaves it up for interpretation, i agree, but that is technically illegal.

This would have been a toss or a shot. It's definitely a penalty that was missed, but still a slick move.

You can only hand a player a stick. It's as simple as that.

Who cares what merriam Webster defines it as, only how the NHL defines it matters and it appears it's very discretionary. Was in view of the officials and no one deemed it worthy of a penalty so looks like it was legal

That should be a penalty, no?

You can pick up and hand a teammate his stick but you cannot use your own stick to move or knock another stick.

Seems only fair symmetry if they don't call the slash by Toewes, to let this little flip go by Backes. Both should be penalties.

During the game I didn't see what set the stick bouncing when Schwartz grabbed it out of the air.

Doesn't matter what you call it, you can only receive a stick from a teammate if they hand it to you. That's the rule. It doesn't say "kick" in their either, but if a guy dropkicks a stick to his teammate you can bet that's a penalty too.

Was at the game...from the stands, it looked like Schwartz stepped on the blade and it flipped up to him...the gif makes it perfectly clear what happened...it all happened so fast. Slick and sick move!

Am I the only one who thinks this might've just been Backes trying to clear the stick out of the way?
