Over the line? Media should absolutely take these clowns to task when they do stupid shit. Watching Kevin Lowe flip out because "he has six rings" was legendary.

Hiring Chayka was a braindead move, full stop.
Let me guess. You didn’t even listen to it. I didnt like that hire either but that means he should be embarrassed in front of everyone and his family? He didn’t do anything but accept a job.

You are such a hypocrite.

And there you go on a Kevin Lowe tangent.

He hasn't been a good coach in a long, LONG time. That is all I care about. I could care less about him being an asshole. Yeah, he is, but if he gets results nobody will care. The problem is that I don't think he will get results, as his track record without a top-3 Dman of all time on his team is sorely lacking.
Exactly he hasnt been a good coach in a long time and he has the baggage.

Its Stan Bowman all over. This isnt Evander Kane coming here with baggage and making everyone forget with how good he was. Babcock has no accomplishments without Lidstrom playing half the game or the greatest national team defense of all time.

I think the elephant in the room will definitely be addressed.

Ya but we’ve seen this before from Oilers PR. They’ll tell 2 guys they’re allowed to ask (probably vetted) questions about Babcocks history and then they’ll basically say “okay we’re finished with addressing that, nobody ever bring it up again.”

Always said Chayka is a dumb persons idea of a smart guy. If they wanted to go full moneyball you move heaven and earth and get an actual smart numbers guy like Tulsky or Metha. Im not even going to joke and say this organization should do that.

We only hire fancy names with really old accomplishments.

Sorry, but aren't pressers supposed to be designed with taking questions in mind? If all you can handle is soft serve then get out of here.

I wish our media would grill the Oilers about this hire but it'll be the usual "Oh hey Mike how excited are you to coach Connor McDavid?"

Excited to watch this board justify McDrai playing 25 minutes a night and Bouchard's mistakes being ignored as smart decisions now that the coach looks angry on the bench sometimes.

Didn't Babcock get criticized for not playing Matthews enough in Toronto?

This board will be consistent about one thing, to it's credit.

It will be very mad when Babcock isn't force feeding Savoie and Howard 20 minutes a night on the top line.

Leafs fan here

Not sure how Babs will do for you guys. Clearly Connor and Leon are OK with him being the bench boss, so realistically that's all that matters for you guys. Hard to imagine Babs pulling the shit he has in the past, but then again, a tiger never loses their stripes.

I don't remember the hockey being overly exciting to watch if I'm being honest with you. Lots of high flips into neutral ice and making opposing defenders make mistakes. He's easily the most stubborn coach I have ever watched. Not even remotely close. For example, the Leafs routinely would lose the second half of a B2B because Babs would always throw the backup in on the second game. It didn't even matter if the 1st game was a bottom feeder and the 2nd game was a divisional opponent. It was starter, then backup. No exceptions. It was becoming clear that it was an issue playing on the 2nd half of a b2b, and the media began to ask appropriate questions regarding it. Babs refused to budge. Almost intentionally. Kinda falls in line with his famous quote " I will always bet on Mike Babcock".

That said, the guy knows the game in and out, and he might just be the type of coach you guys need. Like I said earlier, if I were an Oil fan, it would give me comfort knowing 97 and 29 gave it their stamp of approval. Shows how serious those 2 are about winning if they are willing to OK Babs as your coach.

Best of luck to guys. I can't say I'll be cheering for it to work out for obvious reasons, but I'd expect nothing less in return if the situations were reversed

I laughed when I first read about Babcock being a candidate. Just a few weeks later I'm still a bit in disbelief about them hiring this guy.
This org is so terrible desperate and it shows, Bowman & Babcock at the helm, embrace the pain.

I've said my piece about hiring Babcock. Now that it is done I will root for him to succeed and gladly eat crow if he does because that would mean the team succeeds.

That said I do have some hope that Smith counters some of my biggest concerns about Babcock.
Same here. But the expectations of this hire are a SC, we’ve already reached the final twice with a rookie coach, anything less than a cup is a failure. Tough bar, but that’s the reality of our situation.

Yup.

Onward, and hopefully upward. I hope the forum bitching can subside or at least stay focussed on the team performance/record.

The reality is that no one in management asked my opinion. Moreover, if they did that in itself should be a firing offense because the bottom line is I really know nothing. I am just a fan that has bled for this team since day 1. I am not going to give up now if I didn't when they sold Gretzky and dismantled one of the best teams of all time. So while he was not my choice, I can put it behind me for now and as you say look forward to a better year.

I think this is most people's opinion at the end of the day. I don't expect him to be a positive influence for a variety of reasons that have been covered quite a bit. I also share some excitement about DJ if he ends up being a big voice in the tactics area. I guess we'll see in that regard.

Everybody wants the team to succeed, so I hope Babcock hits it out of the park. I'm just not expecting it.
