Bäckström to receive silver medal

In addition Bäckström gets a one game penalty for the misdemeanor and one that he has already served with the olympic final game exclusion.

The IOC DC took into account in particular that the athlete had been cooperative, had disclosed the medication in question in the doping control form and had relied on the specific advice of his team doctor that the intake of the medication would not give rise to an adverse analytical finding. There was also no indication of any intent of the athlete to improve his performance by taking a prohibited substance. Based upon these mitigating circumstances, the IOC DC considered that the athlete should be entitled to receive the silver medal and diploma awarded for men’s ice hockey.

Atleast some justice for Bäckström and I hope that he can feel at peace with this and can look forward.

How many Bronze does one country really need?

You'll see the count is up when they stop showing up for the Bronze games. As far as ice-hockey goes, the Nordic Bronze Age never ended.

Handy buggers really, them Bronze medals, if you for example want to claim a top-something spot in the rankings. I mean, there has to be some amount of them to finally make it a fact that you're solid number three even if there may be some variation in rankings 2, 4 and 5.

But enough of that. So, IOC DC didn't make any problem of the reported allegations that NHL and possibly IIHF would have pressurized the Swedish association to attack back on IOC or to find someone to take the blame? Not to say that they should, but one would think they wouldn't have been totally pleased about the reaction of Team Sweden to banning Bäckström from the GMG. Of course, taking it on one specific player outside of whose control such things would be would be petty and really unfair.

Well, thankfully that's over. Good call.

Although he may just feel like using that medal as a coaster for awhile.

such BS that he was suspended, doubt he cares about it that much

He most certainly cared about though. He was devastated.. not being able to play the most important game of his life so far and being labeled a cheater by the IOC. I'm sure this was very important to him.

Obviously the right call. Backstrom may not feel any better now, but it will mean a lot later in life.

To say to your kids that your team finished 2nd but you didnt get a medal would be something that sucks
