Is CMac aware though? He had the entire summer to figure this out and decided to do nothing about it. Georgiev is not the answer to any contending team that has aspirations of winning the cup.
Yeah, I’d like to think CMac knows it and he’s actually working on some kind of a trade to get us a new starter, but who knows exactly what he’s up to

You realize every dollar matters for a team like the Avs, right? And you have no issues spending an additional 700K on a goalie who is essentially the same caliber as Annunen?

Make it make sense.
Landeskog isn’t coming back in the regular season. The Avs have like 4M of space to get a goaltender. .5M in cap plus 3.4M of Georgiev. That’s with a 23 man cap hit.

If they want to make more additions afterwards, it’ll be money in, money out.

I think that’s exactly what CMac is waiting for to have clarity on Landy. If he’s not coming back in the regular season, CMac will have more flexibility with the cap, and maybe that’s actually what he’s waiting for before he trades for a new starter. They should probably know what Landy’s situation is by the trade deadline

We might be well out of the playoff picture by the deadline because of terrible goaltending

Very weird trade for the Avs if you ask me, neither have been very good, but Annunen is 24 and has he really given a real chance? Would make a lot more sense to me if Avs had a solid starter, but swapping a "bad 24yo goalie" to a "bad 32yo goalie" is something i dont get. Ofc they know better but from the outside this feels very weird.

I think it had more to do with his relationship with Bednar, Bednar really didn’t seem to like him much and always threw him under the bus/wouldn’t give him credit for good games.

Another part of me is wondering if Parkkila isn’t working out with George going downhill after his first year and Justus not panning out.

I don’t see how it’s even possible for him to come back cap wise.

There has been some talk on finnish forums about if Parkkila is the next one to get the boot, he did good with some goalies before, but with Georgiev it's not going very well, thoughts?

Hard to say…it very well could be, but it could also be the goalies not meshing with him. Theres no way in hell Parkkila is telling Georgiev to play in net like he’s the size of an 8 year old

I just don’t think Annunen is NHL caliber at all. Georgiev is, but has the mental fortitude of a sickly banana slug.

Avs just should’ve moved on from both a while ago. Thinking either was an option for a team with Cup aspirations just tells you how utterly broken their goalie evaluation/development department is.
Love your final sentence in this post. Broken is worse than clueless. And the Avs goalie dept certainly is that.

I'm trying to find a bright side here, but this trade just stinks on first viewing... Annunen may be struggling, but he's still at less than 30 games of NHL experience and has enjoyed some ups along with his downs in that limited time. If they didn't trade Georgiev for a song after his catastrophic start to the season, why dump Annunen for a middling backup at the first whiff of trouble? Especially after the Avs have spent so long putting all their eggs in the Annunen basket by not drafting a single other goalie with a top 3 round pick until just last spring?

The biggest loss though is that amazing contract he has. That was going to be massive for our cap flexibility for the next two seasons to have a backup goalie for basically minimum wage. You won't find a better warm body for that position on the open market.

And this also means that we are now locked in on the Georgiev track. He is the guy no matter what, apparently management feels good going with him for the rest of the season, and frankly probably beyond, too. Nabokov isn't going to come in next season and be a starter, even if he could make it to that level one day. The only way to get a better/cheaper goalie option for next year would be to put Ritchie on the block.
Mgmt (including Bednar) is going to live or die with Georgiev.

(My prognosis is it's going to be a painful ugly death.)

Because....

Georgiev is to Bednar today as was Compher to his daddy back then.

George had one good game after completing his rehabilitation/sabbatical. And " Dad" (Uncle Jared) declared his unconditional love for his progeny right then and there.

Do not expect objectivity, logic and analysis of numbers. This is an emotional issue.

Bednar doesn’t make roster decisions. He can say what he may want, but the results will speak for themselves. It doesn’t matter how much he loves Georgiev, if his SP is under 900 and the risk of missing the playoffs is possible, Bednar won’t control anything.

Bednar is one of the longest tenured coaches in the NHL. I think he controls a lot more of this roster than we think. If he goes to Cmac and says he doesn't like player X, do you really think the GM isn't going to listen?

Yes. In a situation where Bednar won’t use a player he doesn’t like, certainly.

I also think if he goes to CMac and says I like Georgiev, who’s sporting an 870SP, and the Avs are at risk of not making the playoffs, CMac is going to tell him he doesn’t give a f**k who Bednar likes in that case.

The problem is, I think Bednar like George a lot. His praise for George always sounds genuine. The question is, does Cmac have the balls to get rid of someone the coach likes and may cause a rift?

I think ultimately, the results will dictate that.

And reality is, this is Georgievs last season with us. There’s no long term attachment.

Cmac also needs to get rid of the coach, unfortunately. People won't want to hear this, but Bednar's time has come
