This org seems to do well with big, late blooming AHLers. Graves, Englund, Burroughs and now Middleton. It's probably why they're hanging on to Ludvig, he's a similar type of galoot
I think the secret ingredient is Nolan Pratt. He's just really gifted at bringing out the best in fringe AHL defensemen. I know Malinski isn't in the same size range, but he also looks way steadier after some time in the Avs system. His offense has cooled off, but he looks like an everyday NHL player now.

Seems like the Avs are trying to lock up all their other pieces so they know exactly how much they can offer Mikko. Currently sitting at 72.145m with 16 players for next year.

Hopefully they re-up Kivi (UFA) and Parssinen and Malinski (RFAs) in the coming weeks. That'll bring it up to around 77m with 19 players.

Leaves 15.4 m for Mikko, Drouin, and 2 depth dmen (CDH/Kylington). It's very much do-able.
If CDH or Kylington want a dollar over minimum hang up the phone. Middleton is about as good as those two damaged goods.

There, we know the budget with clarity.

It’s a bit like Englund where I’m left wondering how much of it is him playing better than expected and how much of it is Bednar sheltering the shit outta him.

I don’t mind the contract though, if this is the guy taking on the “tough guy” role, he’s a much better option on the back end than MacDermid ever was.
