I don't know. He's still playing in Boston like he did in Colorado this year and during his first 4 seasons in Buffalo. Hard to tell which one is the real Mitts at this point.
I'm not blaming CMac but it was somewhat risky. Honestly I think CMac has been unlucky with most of his gambles. Hopefully the new guys (Necas, Coyle, Nelson and Lindgren) are going to change this.
This is what happens when you go all in every year like some fans throught they should do.
The more trades you make, the more mistakes you will have. The bigger the trades, the higher the chances for a mistake. It adds up over time, and makes the margin for error smaller, because you might have shortened your window, and now you have to win to make up for the lost future assets.
This is why going all in every year is a bad strategy IMO. You have to be more selective. This is why I think it was ok not to go all in during 22-23. I think they lost patience with the Byram-Mitts trade though. I advocated a stop gap move instead and I think it has proven that would have been better.
CMac was extremely aggressive this year, but this season, and this team just feels different. Unlike past years, they were relatively healthy, they improved their goaltending, and it was another year down the road. Just like you can't go all in every year, you can't be patient every year either.
I think this was the right year to be aggressive. After the deadline, the team has a domination factor that I haven't seen since 22, when they looked incredibly hard to beat. Individuals have looked good in early results before, but the team has rarely looked this good. Just wish they traded for a top 4 D man.
Nelson may walk, but if he does, I think that means Lindgren stays, and Coyle's salary at 3C won't be an issue, because he'll likely be the 2C.
Coyle's offensive production could still be an issue then, but I feel like he's got more to give there, if he plays in a bigger role with more skilled linemates.
He skates well, he battles, he's got good instincts, he's shown flashes of skill with good hands, and he seems very coachable. I think that bodes well for his chances at producing more in a bigger role on the Avs.
