He gave them 4 good games so they're paying him already

Considering Blackwood has a -29.5 GSAA in the 4 years before this year (82 games with NJ and 44 games with San Jose), I'm not exactly sure why Colorado is rushing to give him an extension. Unless he's coming in cheap I don't see why they don't just wait until March or so, when he'll have a larger sample size of games.

This reminds me of when the Oilers gave Koskinen a decent sized deal because he was good for them for half a season, and he proceeded to be terrible for the majority of that deal.

You cant be serious? Keumper was pretty damn good for your Avs

It's been 4 games, rushing to extend him is pretty dumb IMO
The Avs don’t treat goaltenders like other teams do. They see it like running backs in the NFL. Often interchangeable. The AVS aren’t getting any of the top legitimate goalies, and all the rest are all over the place in terms of quality from year to year.
The UFAs to be are nothing specialx and they just spent assets getting Blackwood. 4 games is actually pretty long for the Avs.
Both grubauer and Georgiev were signed immediately.

The AVS simply want acceptable goaltending. If they think the guy they have can give it to them, and the contract is within their range, they will accept the player.

Doesn't make a ton of sense but depends on the number. Guess they could dump Wedgewood in the summer and bring in another 1b type.

What? They literally just acquired both Blackwood and Wedgewood. Why on earth would they then go out and rotate out Wedgewood AGAIN after just acquiring him? He only has 1.5 years left on his deal.

There's no safe option for a goaltender at our price range. You have to take a risk. It's a gamble but at least we saw the product first. It's still better this way than randomly signing guy in summer.

Kuemper is interesting topic or sensitive topic. We don't have very good memories of him because his terrible playoff performance.

He was the biggest reason we could have lost that year the Cup. The team was brilliant, just dominant. He was the weakest link by far. Of course he had an injury and all, but still terrifies me to think about him trying to make a save in the playoffs.

Before the injury he was good

Kuemper's one year in Denver resulted in him finishing 5th in GSAx and 5th in SV%.

Varlamov's best season was in 2014 when he finished 2nd in GSAx and 6th in SV%.

In Kuemper's one season he was marginally less impactful than Varlamov's best season during his entire tenure. It amazes me how little Avs fans know about their own team, but at the same time claim they're all experts. It's pretty funny.

There were tons of Avs fans saying they trusted Georgiev more than Kuemper after the Cup year. They're nuts.

Compare defense front of them. Not close.

He was stellar in the regular season. Then injured his eye in the playoffs and was pretty rough. Recency bias also plays a factor.

Probably should wait to see what the contract is.

I mean the Avs are damned if they do and damned if they don't, according to most here. They trade a bunch of stuff for Blackwood, who had been excellent in San Jose, he continues to show excellent signs in Denver.

He's going to be an UFA in the spring, what should the Avs do?

"Wait and see how good he is the rest of the year" - the price goes WAY up.

"Let him walk into free agency" - after identifying him as the guy you wanted and giving stuff up for him?

I'd wager they feel comfortable that they can get a better price on an extension now than in March or April. If they like the guy (they clearly do) - what is the point in waiting?

I swear this forum and goalies...you can't win. Every extension for every goalie ever is crappy unless it is Hellebuyck - and then that's crappy when he inevitably melts down in the playoffs.

As a Devils fan this doesn’t surprise me that much, he had some pretty amazing stretches with us. He was arguably the best goalie in the NHL for like, months at a time.

That said the meltdown at the end was extraordinarily ugly. I’m talking regularly whiffing on routine saves.

It will be interesting to see what happens, he would be far from the first goalie to find consistency in his late 20s / early 30s. Such a weird position.
