I mean Nuck, MacKinnon, ratanen, Lehkonen are known for playing physical games as much as their putting up points. When people talk bout size I’d think they are talking bout physicality not height.

We were in a b2b, but, their physicality is as much a problem as their speed. So interesting if it would have been a good game for Heinola. In hindsight Stan played great, but, I wonder bout using your fresh legs on b2b. Whether having Toni come in for Gus, Heinola would have been a better decision to keep team fresher. Knowing what we know they made a good choice playing Stan.

Ppl keep saying Stan will get eaten alive by fast teams, while, last game he held up fine. Next text, is to see whether he can maintain level of play.

Jets need to beat avs with depth as their stars are better, but, is their bottom 6 or 2nd line? Thats where jets need to win.

 Obviously size and physicality are related, but I hope I say size when I mean size and physicality when I mean physicality. At least I try to.

Fleury is listed as 6'4 and 207 but I don't expect much physicality from him. Maybe if he could add that to his game he would be closer to living up to his draft position.

Happy New Year HFJets board ..

Hello all - just want to drop a quick note - all rumours of my demise are overstated and I am back soon to spread the shapen word among all of ye coelacanths large and small.

Despite the setback in the dank and sullen halls of Denver, the Jets are having a killer year, whot?

As an semi-attendant actor on this season's stage
Who with his year has cheered his less publicized part,
Or some fierce thing replete with too much rage,
Whose strength's abundance strengthen'd the Jets own heart.
So I, for fear of trust, forget to say
The perfect ceremony of a 27 win (to date) rite,
And in mine own team's strength detect no decay,
O'ercharged with burden of mine own inputs' might.
O, learn to read what mine silent love hath writ:
To express again with mine own paltry wit.

(apologies as always to the Shakester)

Back soon,
- k

He also screened Comrie on their 1st while clearing an Avs player from in front of the net. He did move the guy quite forcefully though, FWIW.

But all in all I think he had a pretty good game. At least good enough that he was not why we lost. The whole team was outskated except for a few little bursts of energy.
High praise from Mort :sarcasm:
He had a good game - end of story
You really don't have to do out of your way to list what he did wrong before throwing him a half assed bone.
And honestly, is saying he isn't the reason we lost really any sort of compliment?
But I get that it's hard for some :D

Not sure how height is relevant. Heinola is smaller, not just because of height, but, also because he looks slender not a beefy boy. But, still within avg height it looks like.

Not hard at all. I have given him higher praise after a couple of other recent games, where he contributed to a win.

I went out of my way to point out what he did wrong in response to a post highlighting a couple of things he did right. I wasn't going to mention it otherwise.

Saying he wasn't the reason we lost is faint praise but did any Jet not named Comrie play well enough to earn more than that last night? And no, I am not ignoring the excuses. I thought they did as well as could be expected under the circumstances. That includes Stanley.

Well we certainly can't have anyone out there just posting good things ;)
Especially when it's usually just bad things that get the print with this player

No worries / offense - it just caught me as being funny at the time

I think a number of jets had good games until they ran out of steam at end. Villardi had a good game, unlucky his stick broke. Lowry had a good game.
You can also have a really good game and make a mistake at the same time - nobody called it a perfect game

It's not just speed the Avs have. Maybe Makar. Their top guys are all too big and fast to handle. MacKinnon is that way against everyone, but even Rantanen and Nichushkin can protect the puck with ease.

I honestly feel like it's more size we need on D to slow down their speed, not more speed from our forwards.

A guy like Manson on our right side is all we need. Just easier said than done. We can scheme to limit the effectiveness of their point shots strategy that works so well against us. But we need a guy or two that can actually go toe to toe with guys in front of the net.

It's just that's not the game if DeMelo, Pionk, Stanley or Miller

Yes, the combination of size and speed in the same player is tough. But we managed very well last regular season. The PO were another story but I think we got rope a doped into playing to their strengths in that series, got away from playing our game. JMO I guess. But I'm not reading anything into last night's game. It was a setup.

The next one doesn't exactly favour us either but it should be closer to an even playing field. Got my excuses handy though, just in case.

I'll be at that game. I have a pretty good record of watching Jets win. IIRC the last time I saw them lose it was to Avs. Good game though. Jets fell behind early, came back to tie and lost by 1 late in the game. IIRC

I think a number of jets had good games until they ran out of steam at end. Villardi had a good game, unlucky his stick broke. Lowry had a good game.

I can't argue that but what I saw was those players having brief bursts of good play. Stayed in the game until late in the second and then ran out of gas.

Welcome back @kanadalainen

You’ve certainly been missed around here. Some of us had to resort to banging pots and pans to assist with understanding Sawyer interviewing the boys during the intermissions

Happy new years everyone !
:laugh: Happy to help with this... Sawyer is a convoluted patois - his code is not easily broken - but, break it we shall.. back at it sometime next week. :)

Thanks Mort. :)

I will be back in my ice-locked town near the end of next week and will be contributing as per my norm. Sonnets, Sawyer interviews, repetitve and mildly abusive exhortations in-game, coelacanth of the game, Dostoevsky moments (very few of those this year).

Sawyer: Ho HO!! Yesay yesay yuh GONNA score budda GODDA SHUTE more hey?

Lowry: Thanks. Yes, that's what coach was pushing me to do, my chances were a bit limited by their forecheck.

Sawyer: YAYA, Tolja <winks conspiratorily> WHUDDA bout DEELERS?

Lowry: Nikky can speak for himself, got to run now. (Tears headphones off and makes cutting motion over his own neck, quickly moves off camera).

My observations in no particular order:

*impressed with the Jets puck management and team defense.
*not convinced the top line won't get dominated in a playoff matchup. I'd like a faster, more defensive-minded winger with 55 and 81.
*Perfetti needs to move down to 4th line.
*NIdereiter too slow.
*Barron and Kupari need more minutes. We'd be better with them flanking 17.
*need a bigger, experienced D to play big minutes with 44.
This is a great take. Very well written but you will get lambasted for being a realist and told " but they are in first place".

Keep being objective. It will lead to less pain in April!

The last time I picked the Jets to win the Cup was 1985 in my dad's CN hockey pool. That was the year the Jets had the Oilers number. Scott Arniel was on that team. But Jamie Macoun ended any hope after round 1. You never know how it will go.

It's funny with advanced stats and every game televised I think there's no way Dale Hawerchuk would have become the legend he did. Too many details would have been overanalyzed.

It's fun to be a fan of the Jets this year. Everyone has their own thoughts on how to improve the team or what elements are missing. Don't get too high or too low and the ride is more enjoyable.

We owned them last regular season which made the playoff early exit sooooooo frustrating.
They were faster and all over us then.
Last night we were tired but slugged it out for 2 periods.
I don’t think the Avs are the western conference champs this year it going through f*** Vegas or us
What are your thoughts on Dallas and oilers?

That was the story last season - our depth and goal tending was supposed to be our strength but their stars just took over…Makar absolutely turned it up another notch

Stars seemed to “out goalie” and “out depth” them the following round

And still what we have to rely on or we may as well count ourselves out as no one we pick up or have is as good as Makar and MacKinnon strategy really doesn’t change.

Oilers, I think Stuart Skinner had an amazing season last year.
Started off very poorly then played extremely well last 1/2 of the season and playoffs, I doubt we see that happening again.

Dallas great overall team, a bit on the older side with decent goalie but my hope is the Jets replace them at the top and I am HOPING Hellebucyk and the rest of the team figure out how the playoffs work!!!

By winning a round in the playoffs!
I am not the only one who thinks this but perhaps I voice it too often for this group.
I’m there as well.
There’s nothing wrong with being truthful.
Absolutely enjoying the regular season and am HOPING for playoff success, but fool me twice …
The regular season is one thing, playoff hockey is another animal altogether and we have not shown we cannot find another gear.
Maybe it’s a case of having to knock at the door a few times before we can come in?
If we exit round 1 there will be more people in this camp.

Ok i get it, i have been pissed the last 2 playoffs too but the playoffs are over 4 months away. I say we worry about the playoffs and how we are going to play once we get closer , like maybe a couple weeks out from them.

you're on vacation with some friends at a tropical resort and you're having the time of your lives but you keep looking over at the airstrip where a bunch of mechanics are feverishly working on the plane that's going to fly you home - a plane that you know has crashed several times in the past already - and every time you mention it to your buddies they say "just relax and enjoy the vacation!"

Well said. The Leafs have become a good example of a great regular season team with only one playoff round win in 15 years or whatever it is. I am not sure why people get their backs up. If the Jets were fighting to make thd playoffs I would not be thinking the way I am but they are basically a lock and it is kinda hurry up and wait for the playoffs.

Fair point but easier said than done. I realize they cannot play playoff hockey for 82 games but they cannot beat Vegas and Col just looks better than them.
These are the teams they have to get past kinda like Jets 1.0 could never get past the Oilers. It was insufferable and has scarred me for life as a hockey fan or made me more realistic!

Yup! Jets are in first place in the league. Enjoy it while it lasts, no use worrying about something that might happen in April.
