Point percentage is more of a predictive stat. You actually need to win those games to get the points. But that's not guaranteed.

Exactly my point. Playoff positions are determined when 82 games have been played not in December. The 8 teams in each conference with the highest point percentages after 82 games have been played make the playoffs.
The point of point percentage is to give you a general idea inside the course of the season. The percentage doesn't matter after 82 games, because you can just go off of the flat number.

The original post I replied to said the league doesn't determine playoff spots by point percentages which it absolutely does at the the end of the year because points and point percentages are directly related. If the post had said the league doesn't determine standings throughout the season by point percentages than I wouldn't have replied.

Fellas, at the completion of the regular season, each team will have played 82 games. In most professional sports, at that time, the standings according to games won ( points) would be identical to the standings according to Points %, rendering Points % as an unnecessarily obtuse metric. The NHL considers 1) Points, 2) RW, 3) ROW, 4) Total Wins ( W column), 5) Head-to-head (This is where Points % can occasionally come into play, but only mid-season as one key variable - total games played - can be eliminated at the end of the season because all teams would have that identical number of GP) and 6) Goal Differential.
Right now there are 6 teams in the West who could switch order in as little as 2 games, so I understand what those who favor Points % are saying. That said, I would still like the 2-point lead as the Avs have those points in the bank and Dallas / Vancouver / Calgary / Edmonton do not...yet

Bitchin' about points and current standings...yep, par for the course. The trajectory seems to be improving with a lineup that is sub-optimal in spots because several players are currently dead. This team is definitely due to go on a heater, and so are the big guns.

Goalies are supposed to stop pucks. I know it feels weird after the Georgiev and Annunen era. But it is normal.
