Average goalie save percentage very low in 2023!

Not every team is able to cherry pick good contracts in an expansion draft. Using the two expansion teams as your examples is not very fair.

Arizona, Columbus, Minnesota did the same thing when they had their brief runs, Carolina is a rich man’s version of this.

The cognitive dissonance in this thread is interesting. Players and equipment are better than they have ever been and talent is so high.. but the defensemen and goalies are trash at the same time and were better 10 years ago lol.. oh hfboards.. never change.

Along the lines of equipment, the way the goalie equipment has been designed/made now, goalies cheat more which equates to less skill involved. The advancement in equipment has degraded the goalies requirement to be a skilled skater and to be mentally sharp(reading the play). It's not talked about enough how the mental part of goaltending is harder to grasp than the physical part. I see too many goalies that are programmed robots.

simple answer.... expansion (VGK and SEA)

dilutes the overall D, and this is the consequence. Same thing happened after the 67 expansion, scoring went up a ton in the 70s and 80s for this reason

Offensive defensemen era. More D going up on offense and taking risks at the detriment of defense. It creates more turnovers and better scoring chances, leading in lower save percentages.
