Average goalie save percentage very low in 2023!

I admit I am used to thinking .915 is average. When I see .902 I think sieve. When I see .899 I think it is time for the AHL.

The league average is .902.

Something to consider when we all call goalies below average.

There was some talk that teams don't take "Feel good" shots any more. They work to make things dangerous instead of just peppering people. I think that was Kevin Woodley on the Hockey PDOCast a week or two back.

It's a mind bend for me. Eg. As an Oiler fan I keep saying we need average goaltending. But that is .902. we are almost there.lol.

Even most the Czechs are near .900 and I keep thinking disaster.lol

Makes sense about no easy shots anymore.

Good. May the dead puck era stay dead
dpe was also a change in shoot volume.

2000-2001 and 99-00 the league was .903-.904, lower than 2006-2007, whole 2 less shot a night.

2024 .903 is the same than 1999-2000.

I imagine empty net goals has rose a bit has well and some place count shoutout win extra goal in their goal season average.

This is a product of teams abandoning defensive structure for offensive production. It’s the mcdrai effect . Heavy defense with the right ratio of offense will always win championships. The pendulum has swung to far in the wrong direction. Goal tending is the obvious victim of this mentality.

Lopsided scores seem more common this season. It doesn't even feel as embarrassing to get blown out in a game these days

This generations goalies are not skillful as the last.

Name me any current goalie half as good as Brodeur.

I’m pretty sure nearly half of the recent uptick in scoring since 2018 is due to empty net goals, it is atleast a significant amount

How can you be used to thinking of it as average when there was only two seasons in history it was ever even that high?

Around .909 seemed average to me for a while, around 10 saves every 11 shots. Although saying it like that seems like a pretty good game actually. Anything better than that certainly seems above average.

Now apparently 28 saves in 31 shots is closer to average. Still seems like an okay night.

Systems are designed around shooting from closer than they used to be. Not too many teams cycle out back to the point for a slapshot from the blueline anymore, offensive defensemen tend to do their damage skating in to the circles.

2016 D scoring was dominated by guys with big point shots, now it’s a bunch of Karlsson clones that do their damage skating the puck and quarterbacking from the point.
