Shapo started out great against Musetti with an early 3-love lead, but couldn't hold it for long. Musetti pretty much ran away with the subsequent breaker, so he is definitely in the driver seat.

Another breaker goes to Musetti, up two sets to love now. Shapo has 12 double faults and 46 unforced errors in 26 games. After that promising start in the first set, this is turning into a by now pretty much standard performance from Denis.

Third set and Shapo is in a snit. 14 unforced errors in four games. He's way too old for this nonsense.

Fritz has now won two matches with the combined loss of only eight games total. Brooksby and Garin, on this surface, constitute very easy early round draws, but Taylor sure looks like he is going to be a very tough out. Who knows? He's probably no worse than the fifth favourite (I'd listen to arguments for 4th) and he is in the easier half.

Fritz beats Garin 2, 1, 0 in 1:22. We'll see how far he can go, but I was marveling at Alcaraz doing the same yesterday in his second match and Fritz essentially matched him there. Not saying he'll be able to match Alcaraz or Sinner at the end of the tournament, but this is probably the best year or so stretch of his career.
 
Diallo lost in four tough sets to Khachanov whose steadiness and veteran smarts were the deciding factors, but Gabriel put up one hell of a fight. His future looks brighter than any Canadian right now.

Not as sharp as against Rublev and playing Sonego, an opponent less dependent on predictable patterns than Andrey, Fonseco still manages to get the first set to a breaker which he wins despite blowing a 6-3 lead.
 
Berrettini evens his match with Rune at a set apiece. Both players have had streaks where they have looked terrific. I haven't seen Berrettini play this well in a long time.

Sonego evens his match with Fonseca at a set apiece as well. Lorenzo is doing a good job of disrupting Joao's rhythm, not letting him get into a groove.
 
Joao is already damn good at working the crowd. And where are all these Brazilians coming from in Australia? They make for one intimidating crowd. Sonego up two sets to one, but Fonseca leading 4-1 in the fourth set.

Rune now taking control of his match with Berrettini. Holger is up two sets to one and now has broken for 2-love in the fourth set. On the basis of this match so far, I'd say he has his mojo back.

I watched Mensik-Ruud about 4 rows up from the baseline last night here in Melbourne. This kid is very good. Also attended the charity match with Novak and Andy, it was so fun.

Guys, I have tickets to Rod Laver next Tuesday night's session. I don't wanna jinx it, but I'm really hoping it works out the way it should...

P.S. All 4 grand slams checked off the bucket list...

Joao recovers to take the fourth set and it is anybody's match going into the fifth set. Meanwhile, Berrettini has broken Rune and the fourth set is now even at 3-all. Is Berrettini fit enough to go a fifth set if it comes to that?

Sinner lost the first set to an Aussie ranked 173. Would be some upset.

I maintain that Alcaraz has looked by far the best so far of the somewhat big 3 (Alcaraz, Sinner, Djokovic).

Thanks, maybe time to do the 9/9 for Masters next, have only done Toronto/MTL and Rome.

Both exciting, well played matches ended within ten seconds of each other. Rune won a super tense breaker to defeat Berrettini in four sets, and Sonego raised his game and played clutch tennis when he needed it most in the final set to defeat Fonseca in five hard-fought sets. Terrific entertainment from all four players.
 
I want to cheer for Denis but his behaviour is such a turn off. Compare that with Diallo who doesn’t have temper tantrums and rarely even looks at his box. He figures things out on his own. That is so rare in tennis these days.

No emotional maturity whatsoever! Technical skills could be there but he gets in his own way.
Mentally, just not able to compete when the pressure is on. Quick to blame anybody but himself!
Just watched the Medvedev/Tien match. Shapo could learn a thing or two watching this one and the tenacity you need in order to compete at this level!

What did she do that was so bad? The crowd was booing her and heckling her the whole time. She blew a few kisses, put her hands to her ear, said "how about that," and patted herself on the butt. That is "psycho?" There are athletes including tennis players that do 10x worse than that. Have you ever watched a Kyrgios match?

I went to sleep in the middle of the fifth before Fonseca fell apart. People were saying this guy might be the third best in the world right now. That was what they were discussing on ESPN. This was the first time I’ve seen him play. I thought he looked good for a player his age. Like I believe in that he’s a better prospect for the future than Mensik, Shang, Tien, Fils, Michelsen, all the younger guys from 18-20, but I didn’t see an obvious future top 2-3 player and slam winner. Then again, I didn’t see that out of Sinner. He eventually got there.

Maybe Fonseca will, but I can’t say with confidence yet that he’ll be better than a player like Tsitsipas, Rublev, Rune, Zverev, Kyrgios, Ruud that are perpetual disappointments and more was probably expected out of over the years. You just never know, unless it’s abundantly clear as it was for Alcaraz. They don’t all go the way of Sinner from where Fonseca is right now, and it’s definitely crazy to say he’s the third best in the world when he couldn’t beat Sonego.

Kyrgios is a jerk. Of course the crowd was cheering for the Australian girl, how is that new? Collins has shown over and over again that she’s an ass hat and that performance at the end was embarrassing
 
Good win for Tien over Medvedev. I thought that Medvedev was in trouble after nearly losing to the guy ranked in the 400’s. Tien doesn’t get the same discussion as Mensik or Fonseca, but now into the top 100 of the live rankings, only just turned 19, and only been a pro for like six months.
 
Fonseca is 18 years old, I was quite convinced that he would beat Sonego, in the best of 3 sets he can beat anyone, today we saw the difference between an established pro and a pro who will arrive. He will make his journey and gain experience and improve with training.
