The third set goes to a breaker, and Fearnley holds his nerve while Nick plays dumb tennis, 7-2. Nick hit some fine serves and intimidating shots that set, but not enough to overcome the fact that his game and his fitness were the pits most of the time.

Nole now up two sets to one against Basavareddy.

Some tasty match ups tonight.

Rune/Zhang
Rublev/Fonseca
Berrettini/Norrie
Hurkacz/Griekspoor
Shelton/Nakashima
Musetti/Arnaldi
Cobolli/Etcheverry
Shapo/RBA

Monfils up two sets to love just let Mpetshi Perricard back into the match. Serving at 6-4 in the third set breaker, Gael double faulted twice, including on set point. So far the match has not been defined by GMP's serve but by his abject inability to return Monfils' serve. Up to the double faults, he had only won 13 points on return of serve in the entire match,.

Giovanni takes the fourth set in, natch, another tie breaker. Gael was doing a lot of huffing and puffing that set. Advantage GMP, I'd say.

Bad call on my part. GMP opens the fifth set with a horrendous service game, and Monfils serves it out without much muss or fuss. Great win for Gael, and good to see.

Kasidit Samrej, ranked #418 in the world (how did he even get into qualifying?) currently has a two set to one lead over Medvedev. I mean, yikes. No way Daniil loses this, but yikes, still.

Daniil wins the last two sets easily 1 and 2. In the three sets he won, Medvedev lost no first serves. I keep checking that stat over, but that's what it says. Safe to say, that Samrej has a very soft, unorthodox game that can prove highly frustrating for a while. But he probably has never had to go five sets before. I'd be surprised if he ever makes the top 250.

Apparently Samrej got in by winning the Asia-Pacific Wildcard Playoff late last year, which is a pretty neat way to add a wildcard rather than just another Australian player. As somebody currently in the country, very cool to see and will be interesting to see what buzz this gets nationally. There is a bit of a tennis community here, but badminton and volleyball dominate in terms of court sports here.

Would agree with the assessment of his game though - some nice hands and feel, but little else in terms of tools. Nothing about Samrej's game suggests major potential unless this suddenly lands him some transformative coaching that makes his serve into a weapon or something.

Marathon 5 setter for Diallo to get his first AO main draw win.

Shapovalov with a win over RBA. Marino loses a tough 3 setter 5-7 in the 3rd.

Rublev just bounced in straight sets by 18 year old qualifier Joao Fonseca. Remember the name, could be the next one...got a bright future. He's on a 14 match win streak now (won the Next Gen Finals and a Challenger this year).

I only saw the first set before falling asleep, a one-sided breaker, it turned out. It was extremely well-played, but Rublev found himself on the defensive way more than usual, and, to his credit, played very well for a player who is not known for his defense. But the breaker was a blitz for Fonseca.

He has Tier One potential (and there are now only two guys in Tier One), maybe more than Mensic. That forehand is a thing of beauty.

Thank you for the information, Hossa. I hope it's a big deal in Thailand. A lowly-ranked, totally unheralded player taking two sets off a former world number one who is still among the five best players in the world? This is a case where being the runner-up in the manner he pulled off is itself an achievement. That is definitely cause for celebration back home. Always good to hear from you, old friend.

Been waiting to see something from Fonseca considering all the hype and boy did he deliver. Needless to say, this kid has all the star qualities from the ballstriking to the variety to the flair he brings to the game. Reminds me of when Alcaraz made his first mark on the big stage with the win over Tsitispas in the 2021 USO, that's when you knew he was something special in the making.
Not saying he's the next Carlos but he sure has slam winning potential.

For me he can reach the round of 16, he will beat Sonego and he can beat both Tiafoe and Maroszan. He can't go past Medvedev if Medvedev doesn't have any problems.

Carlos in his blitz against Nishioka (6-love, 6-1, 6-4)

Winners: 36-6
Lost service points: 11 points in 12 games

Total elapsed time for all three sets: 81 minutes

Perseverance pays off for Machac against Opelka. Tomas' only break of serve in the match came at 4-all in the fifth set, 3-6, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. As a feat of concentration alone, that's a very impressive win.

Here's a rarity. The two Anastasia Ps face off against one another, Potapova versus Pavlyuchenkova.

Really happy for Osaka to get through Muchova, felt really unfair to be a R2 matchup but that happens in grand slams sometimes. What an upset too by Siegemund on Zheng, need to watch the highlights or that match in its entirety to see what happened.

Fonseca is gonna be a fun watch too, he's gonna get a lot hype after the Rublev match but I think he has all the tools to be the third to Sinner/Alcaraz for the next decade, he'll replace the third guy in that duo after Rune's career has stagnated tremendously.

Djokovic loses a second set tie breaker to Faria, another virtually unknown player taking liberties with the headliners. Nole broken twice in the set. Can't see him losing, but still...certainly not a confidence builder moving forward.

Rune is still very young. I wouldn't count him out yet.

Him and Tsitsipas are in the same tier for me. Great talents, they need to get away from their families from the tennis side as hard as it might be. Tsitsipas got rid of his dad recently as a coach I believe but it still seems like he's lost out there on court.

Fernandez comes from behind to defeat Bucsa in three sets. It was your basic, no frills Leylah game--stand near the baseline and pound groundstrokes all day. Doubles specialist Bucsa was almost up to the task of matching her.

Rune is like five years younger than Tsitsipas. I wouldn’t compare them.

Mensic demolishes Ruud in the first set 6-2. If Jakob keeps up close to this level of play, he will win the match. Shades of Fonseca beating Rublev last night so far, though that match was more competitive than this opening set.

Felix takes the first 2 in breakers, then loses 4 and 1. Multiple brain cramps at bad times as usual.

I’m watching on a court without commentary which is usually my preference. Having said that, I just found out that they moved this match partway through due to the excessive noise from French fans watching from a neighbouring court. I thought it was because of rain and wondered why the court grew extra seating!

DF had a time violation in the 5th while receiving which cost him a point. He had a hissy fit while Felix stood and watched. Felix held but is now serving down 3-4 0-40. And now 3-5. Unreal.
