Tennis: Australian Open 2025

Stakusic unfortunately lost her first round qualifying match. Marino got in as the last direct entry.

Is Sinner going to be allowed to play? The decision is apparently expected very soon.
It would be a PR disaster to ban Sinner after the draw or midway through the tournament. I'd bet money that he will be allowed to play.

He also has the easiest draw with Fritz and Medvedev his main challenges. Nole and Carlos have the toughest road, meeting one another in the quarters with Zverev and Sinner waiting in the semis and finals potentially.

Fearless predictions:

Sinner over De Minaur
Fritz over Medvedev

Carlos over Djokovic
Zverev over Tabilo

--------------------

Sinner over Fritz
Carlos over Zverev

---------------------

Sinner over Carlos

Rain to start the tournament with Fernandez up a break in her opening set.

Neither Sinner nor Jarry can make a dent in the others service games so far. Not really surprising in Jarry's case as he's a bad returner, but when he is serving well, he is a handful anyway.

11th ranked Tsitsipas bounced out in the first round by Michelsen in four sets. Technically an upset but, if so, a very mild one.
That was a rough draw for Tsitsipas (and Michelsen). I don't know all the exact mechanizations of the draw, but probably about as high ranked of a player as either could theoretically draw in round one.

Michelsen has been playing well and is a player on the up. At the same time, Tsitsipas really shouldn't be losing a match like that, and it speaks to that he's become a major disappointment.

Sinner wins another breaker to go up two sets to zip. Jarry's shot selection and execution turned to goo before he had time to get to the net.

Third set goes very quickly as Jarry's game and concentration go south, 6-1.

Nole and Nick lose first sets to Fearnley and Basavareddy, respectively. Nole has a good chance of coming back; highly doubtful Nick does as he looks anything but match fit.

Nishesh won the first set off Djokovic.

Djokovic looking a lot like Djokovic of last year in that first set.

Nishesh is probably going to be pretty good over the coming years. Not the typical player ranked outside the top 100, but he’s 19 and it’s his first main draw at a slam.

Really shouldn’t be losing sets to someone like that if he expects to win the tournament
