Value of: Auston Matthews

Brad should be at least listening to offers on Matthews. He's got what 2 years left? If you can get a haul for him right now and shake up the core, I'd do it. Fans may not approve of it but you have to take risks.

It’s unrealistic to think the leafs would trade him but if they did I could see playing for Guerin with a team just no entering its window as enticing.

I’d set him down for a no BS talk and ask if he wants to leave. Dangle him out there. Somebody will sell the farm. Personally, I think he’s a weird dude…
Ain’t nobody selling the farm in this situation. There’s no leverage for that. Either Toronto wants to keep him or they accept a trade to just move on like the Sharks did to move Karlsson.

You're talking a 5 year age difference. Matthews at 28 is not worth what Karlsson was, at 33, even after a 100pt season. And it took the Sharks a couple years of not making the playoffs to start doing Burns and Karlsson favors.

I’d expect Matthews to be worth more in a vacuum but full clauses and high cap hits tend to yield disappointing returns. If they get a 1st and a good player or pick, that’s what they should expect if they want to move on. Otherwise, you keep trying with him and however you decide to use Marner and Tavares’ cap space.

That's crazy. Neither LW Gauthier nor LHD Mintyukov project as elite/core players. Matthews (for all his postseason trouble scoring goals) is still a franchise 1C, the best goal scorer in the league, and well-rounded enough to be a Selke and Byng finalist.
People on these boards have no clue about value, well most of them.
The offers for Quinn were absolutely hilarious.

Would love AM in Vancouver but unless leafs wanted to go young, plus picks don't see a fit.

way overpaying for Matthews, especially with him having two years left. Take Jiricek and one of the 1st off

Hard to say what an overpay is when there’s not really a modern example of a player like Matthews being traded. Could use the Eichel deal if you’d like, but there were other circumstances around Eichel that dropped his value and he did have the resume Matthews had when traded. It’s an unrealistic trade anyways.

Matthews would be the best player on majority of teams, we all know that…but a team will never win a cup w him running the show. He doesn’t have that in him. You need to be able to take control, have guys feed off your play, your intensity, showing teammates how to leave it all on the ice after every game. The playoffs is a different animal. A lot of top players don’t have that ability to step up in the playoffs, take on that pressure and prove that you can handle it. I just don’t see it in Matthews or Marner. It’s almost like the pressure is too much for them.

Forget about haul, the Leafs should just take the best offer and move on.

At least half the league would be interested in Matthews even if he hasn't turned up in playoffs. So many GMs think they can be the genius to get the best out of players who underperformed elsewhere.

Teams that need a 1C desperately:
Utah, Seattle, Boston, Anaheim, Calgary, Philadelphia, Nashville.

Teams that could do with a 1C upgrade:
Washington, Buffalo, Rangers, Columbus, Chicago, Vancouver, Minnesota.

And then there is a list of teams who need some more firepower to take them to the next stage (LA, St Louis, Detroit, Islanders).

The market would be there if he's willing to move to one of several teams.
