I dont think Toronto fans can digest a rebuild.
Just be glad to have a team that is constantly at the top of the conference and cruising into playoffs.

Keep all the good you have even if damaged and try to work around it. 1st round picks arent going to do them any good after they have given up half of their picks in upcoming drafts.

I understand that Leafs fans do not like what they see in Matthews anymore, but fans of other teams are not blind either.

This is fan-think, not gm-think.

If Matthews agreed to waive there would be plenty of teams interested, just the cap hit would reduce the number that could be in play - and of course from that the teams would considering waive for.

The teams in contention likely can't make the finances work, but there's 16 teams that didn't make the playoffs last year that really want to. Unquestionably he helps in that capacity & if they ever fix what's ailing him, he's got 50+ goal seasons in his future.

Considering the year he's had + health concerns it would certainly be a "sell low" scenario for the Leafs, but he's got 3 years on his deal and given he clearly can still play at a high level, at least a top prospect and a few firsts would be coming back.

Don't be offended by those guys, they know exactly how it is.

Your second sentence is actually the reason why Leafs and Kings are not good trade partners.
The trading parts for Matthews would be exactly the pieces, the Kings need to play with Matthews to make at least a baby step forward.

I don't see any way to have a trade with the Leafs.

How many GMs have traded for Laine?
He's not even good enough to be a playoff loser, he can't even get his team in the playoffs. Yet every time he's on the market, GMs pick up the phone.

So again, you're sounding like a fan, and worse a fan with a personal grudge against Matthews. Judging by how many times you've already posted in this thread it's starting to look like an obsession.

I do not have personal grudge against Matthews.

I have grudge against fans of the teams who believe that what is not good for their teams can be solved by taking advantage of other teams.

I believe that Karma is real thing…

The Jack Eichel trade is probably your closest comparative in recent history. I'm thinkin you are looking at a 1st round pick and two really good players (i.e. top line forward and top paring defenceman) at a minimum, possible more.

Jack Eichel without a broken neck returns far more than what he ultimately did. As would Matthews if Toronto were to trade him. They'd be stupid to though before they see what they can do without Marner. 60 goal scorers do not grow on trees.

Matthews would be the best player on the Kings by a country mile.

The kings suck.

Looking at your post Toronto really do not to make a trade with LA.

This is good idea for both teams.
P.S. Matthews, which would be the best player on the Kings by a country mile already won 5 titles in Toronto.

Matthews has a full NMC so would have a say in where he goes. If he wanted to go to LA as one of a few teams, Byfield and Clarke would be a conversation starter.

It is hard to put a true value on him with the NMC there. If he would be willing to go to any top 16-20 side, the return would be much higher than him agreeing to say 4 teams.

Regrettably, Matthews, one of the top 10 players in the league when healthy, is now damaged goods. He has a chronic shoulder injury / condition which will haunt and limit his production for the balance of his career. Matthews didn’t travel to Germany for treatment because he loves Weiner Schnitzel. Matthew is a diminishing asset whose value will only lessen over the coming years.

As the great coach of the New York football Giants Tom Caughlin once sagely said : Availability is the greatest skill.

"If you let marner walk" assumes marner wants to resign. Plenty of signals right now that he doesn't. Don't ask me which ones or "source," just use your own search and you can find plenty of smoke to the fire...

With a fairly interesting injury history developing to parts of his body that directly impact his greatest asset with his shooting. Unfortunately things with Matthews are not overall trending great and most people that watch him realize that he doesn't create most of his own offense at this point.

The problem with trading Matthews is any deal you make will be a loss for Toronto. Star players never get equal value returns, it’s always a bunch of magic beans you hope will be as good as AM one day. There is really no reason to trade him unless you are blowing up the entire team and starting over because any trade you make will leave the Leafs as a worse team.

How about Colton Parayko and Pavel Buchnevich for Mathews ? The Leafs get a top 2 d-man and Buchnevich to replace some of Mathews scoring.
St Louis could they move Kyrou for a d-man to replace Parayko.
 
I’d set him down for a no BS talk and ask if he wants to leave. Dangle him out there. Somebody will sell the farm. Personally, I think he’s a weird dude…
