Why would Matthews agent only have a NMC on 23-24? Odd he didn’t do it all 6 years

A player can only have a NMC or NTC for their UFA years. 23-24 is the first season That Matthews could have possibly been an UFA.

You know who also said they wouldn't leave their team... John Tavares.

Not saying its the same but got to be prepared for all outcomes.
Yeah but look at the absolute disaster of an org they were. it wasnt until the 11th hour they tried to get their shit in order and John was like "might as well see what the other teams say" saw our presentation and was like "yup" Auston signs next summer, book it!!

Tavares spent 9 seasons with the Islanders and made the playoffs 3 times. Matthews has spent 6 seasons with the Leafs and made the playoffs every time. Tavares went home to a win-now team, with players on it better than what was on the Isles him included (Marner, Matthews).

There is one team in the NHL with a player better than Matthews and he's not going to Canada's version of Siberia. Out of the major markets he could go to, none have a forward as good as his co-star will be when Matthews is a UFA (Marner/Panarin might be debatable now but most likely not when Marner is 27 and Panarin is 33). The Kings don't have anyone on the level of Marner and it would be a stretch to suggest any of their young players become 95-100 point players within two seasons.

Vegas might be an option if they dump Stone/Pietrangelo and Eichel bounces back.

Pretty ruthless organization, that deals their UFAs with no hesitation

Still a considerable longshot.

As long as we have some playoffs success next year, Matthews should sign early into the next offseason. If we don't he may wait a bit

Has dubas re signed any rfa a year before current deal expires?

He signed Matthews and Engvall a few months before they expired.

Although I am not sure it is really commonplace anywhere in the NHL?

Why would a guy sign early when they know the cap is going up and they are just going to have another year in their prime to help them drive their prices up even more? Short of a GM giving them an overpayment early on (which is likely similar to what they'd have to pay them the year after anyways, so few GM's would do that), or having no confidence in themselves, it makes no sense from a player point-of-view.

Sundin said that too, when he wouldnt be traded to re coup assets... then signed with the Canucks the following year around Christmas for 5.5 for half a season.

Matthews will not re-sign in my opinion if the Leafs dont win a first round/fire Dubas in the next 1 year. Matthews would have no incentive based on what some of the smart fans realize, that Dubas has failed miserably so far and Matthews wants playoff success but can not do it with a revolving door of goaltenders, no prospects in the pipeline, no right hand dmen, obsessed with the same type of forward.

Sundin sat out till Christmas because Brian Burke and Cliff Fletcher wouldn't give him a new deal.

Yeah, obviously the smart fans know what the team needs. We are often on here as voices of reason and correcting the whinny posters with their room and gloom prognostications. Though, some of the possibilities they magnify are real, they are not the only possibilities. We smart posters are looking forward to the season.

It's been a decade and people still pretend like this didn't happen. Never mind the fact that Burke said in the media that they wouldn't be bringing Sundin back as soon as he took the GM position.

Tampa signs guys a year out every season

Did it with Hedman, Kucherov, Point, Sergachev, Cirelli, Cernak. Though in the case of Sergachev it resulted in an awful deal
