Auston Matthews vs Steven Stamkos

Who will go down as the better goalscorer?

If Matthews can avoid injuries like the ones to Stamkos, then Matthews. Stamkos was on a crazy pace but was never quite the same goal scoring wise after those injuries.
 
Stamkos after 5 seasons had goal finishes of 1,1,2,2. Even if Matthews wins a mickey mouse rocket this year, he'll have finishes of 1,2,3. Now consider that Stamkos was neck and neck with 25 year old OV, but Matthews in a normal season can't beat 35 year old OV. Also doubt Matthews has a better goal scoring year than Stamkos' 11/12.

OV who at 35 still won the rocket by 1 more goal, context my friend. OV is the greatest goal scorer of all time, you're acting like he lost to a washed up bum. Nobody in the league beat a 35 year old OV :laugh:

This is now just 1 season after a "35 year old OV" just won the rocket and he is looking like the favorite.

But yeah Stamkos in his prime was an absolute monster, you knew the 1 timer was coming and still couldn't stop it. If Matthews can stay healthy he has a chance of surpassing Stamkos as a goal scorer but it won't be easy. He may not ever hit 60, but if he can be a consistent 50 goal scorer he has a good shot at being regarded as the better goal scorer between the 2 when it's all said and done.
 
Matthews if he stays healthy. Stamkos has been riddled with injuries.

Will be hard to top 60 goals like Stamkos, but who knows, Matthews is playing to a 62 goal pace this year.

Matthews' potential longevity could help him surpass Stamkos even if his peak is slightly higher.

Stamkos should be rightly considered a much better goal scorer than he currently is precisely because he's been hampered so much by injury and that looking at /60 is the fairest way to access his ability as a goalscorer. Matthews has suffered the same thing.

Career goals/60 of all current players:

1. Matthews: 1.826
2. Ovi: 1.754
3. Stamkos: 1.621

Stamkos is an unbelievable goal scorer that has been hit pretty hard by the injury bug and it certainly hurt him long term. Despite his impressive goal ratios, he is probably going to end up with only two rockets (one shared). 145 man games lost over his 12 years so far including a really awful leg injury that also cost him the Olympics certainly hurts his overall totals.

Really all depends on whether or not Matthews can avoid further injuries. Longevity is the key but if you have the tools, age matters less as Ovi has showed us.

The answer to this poll really is TBD.

Stamkos' career can be cut into two segments: pre-injury and post-injury

Minus his rookie season where he clearly hadn't hit his stride, he averaged (210 goals in 331 games) 52 goals per 82 games prior to his leg injury in 2014. After the 2014 injury, he's averaged (206 goals in 431 games) 39 goals per 82 games.

I don't think Matthews will be better than peak Stamkos, but if Matthews remains healthy and doesn't suffer the kind of setback Stamkos did, could end up the better goal scorer long-term.

Conveniently left out the games played eh

Stamkos first 4 seasons: 0.55 goals per game
Matthews first 4 seasons: 0.56 goals per game

Now both have shortened 5th seasons but Matthews career moves to 0.58 and Stamkos to 0.56

It’s not Stamkos so far at all

Stamkos after year 6 injury was never the same goal scorer. He's ahead of Matthews from years 1-5 despite having a poor rookie season.

The years following this one will give you a better picture. Despite derailments Stamkos is still on pace for a 600-650 goal career.

This is pretty misleading. Ovechkin had two of his three worst goalscoring seasons in the middle of Stamkos' prime. No different than Matthews beating Ovechkin in his rookie season when Ovechkin had an off year. And Matthews was "neck and neck" with Ovechkin last year, losing by only one goal.

I think including Stamkos' rookie season is equally as questionable if the question is about who is the better goal scorer presumably at their peak. It would be like trying to determine who the better playmaker was at their peaks between Crosby and Thornton and including Thornton's rookie season to bolster Crosby's case since Crosby came into the league more "NHL ready" than Thornton and didn't have a down rookie year.
 
I think they're pretty similarly talented as goalscorers comparing them through same ages. Stamkos had a better start in terms of totals and finishes, mainly due to circumstances and better health, but I suspect Matthews will make up for it assuming he won't suffer a similar injury to Stamkos.

The bolded part says all you need to read in order to understand just much stock to put on comments like these.

"This trophy is worth less that that trophy because I say so".
