Want and afford while still building a winning roster are two different things. Several clubs already have elite player who are better than Matthews so adding him would ruin the internal cap. Colorado, Edmonton, Vegas, and Florida to name four.
Vegas doesn't have anybody better then Matthews same thing with Florida.
I assume you are talking aboutEichel and Barkov and that's ridiculous, I understand that they both have won a cup.
But if that's all it takes then Patrick Maroon, Kirk Maltby, Kris Draper, Chris Kunitz, Max Talbot, Pascal Dupuis, Zach Bogoisan etc. Would all be better then Mcdavid and nobody would suggest that because that would be ridiculous.
Player A is better then B because Player A has a cup is not how this works.

Eichel and Barkov were key players in leading their clubs to the Cup. They are also great regular season players. Plus they take less of a bite out of the cap than Matthews. They are both better. Why you mention those other players, like Maroon, makes no sense. Maroon and guys of that level are tag-a-longs and only play supporting roles.
Matthews is a great player. But there are obviously teams who wouldn’t add him because they have players who have proven to be better and cost less.

Here is the point more succinctly: there are several teams who wouldn’t take on Matthews because they already have elite players who are better, cheaper, and proven winners. These clubs cannot afford Matthews.
If you think Matthews is a better player than Barkov and Eichel, that’s fine. Imo neither Florida nor Vegas would trade their guy for Matthews.

He was pretty good the other night against Canada although people are making him out to be a lot better than he actually was.. the Tkachuk goal was a total blooper for example.
The biggest thing is that for a guy with the hype he gets and the money he gets needs to be a lot better. At one point a few years ago people were saying he might challenge McDavid a bit and now its easy to make the case that there are a few centers better than him. There is no world where anyone would take Matthew$ over MacKinnon now as an example.
Matthew$ has a whole other gear that you get to see very occasionally, but I think he's just gotten to used to things being handed to him and doesn't even realize himself how great he'd be if he just threw it into that gear for whole series at a time. And how if he played like that he could take things rather than being handed them.

and yet he will still place behind Matthews when its all said it done, your one of the odd ones that would.
Barkov has a better argument than Eichel does. its funny how opinions change on a player so quickly, when Eichel was in Buffalo things were much different on him. truth is Vegas have had better overall teams.
Matthews has 150+ more goals than Eichel,
100+ goals more than Barkov and around 70 less points with 150+ less games played
also with less time in the league he has more awards than both Eichel and Barkov combined.
Im sorry but they arent better than Matthews and when its all said and done they will likely both finish behind Matthews.

When players are in the same tier of great then absolutely the Cup makes a difference. Eichel was the key to the Vegas Cup. Matthews (imo) is a great player too. But until he has playoff success and a Cup to show, he is at the lower end of the tier he’s in with guys like Eichel and Barkov.

Eichel and Barkov arent in the same Tier as Matthews man how exactly are they above or in the same tier so far behind in almost every category. Barkov is slightly ahead in points but with 150+ more games played. you have zero argument to place them above. that one cup doesnt exceed every category
is Toews better than McDavid and MacKinnon because he won 3 cups? no they arent. is Barkov and Eichel better than McDavid or Drai because they won a cup? No they arent and the same goes arguing against Matthews.
Eichel: 1.14 PPG
MacKinnon playoffs: 1.3 PPG
Drai playoffs: 1.45 PPG
McDavid playoffs: 1.58 PPG
Matthews playoffs: 0.87 PPG
Add in 0 goals in the Four Nations and it’s clear this guy becomes a ghost when it matters. This tournament has demolished every defense Leafs fans have had for him over the years and that’s that. There is no coming back up from this unless he wins a Cup and also leads the Leafs in goals or points.

yet when their careers are over Eichel will still be ranked behind Matthews. you wouldn't even draft Eichel over Matthews in fantasy leagues. Im sorry if you dislike it but Matthews is the more elite talent no matter the playoff numbers.
