it's not the crime it's the coverup
It’s also the crime.

As much as I admire the guys will
To win and ability to raise the level of his play in big games, I’m sure that if @93gilmour93 had this happen to his daughter/wife/sister/mother, where a bunch of adolescent males surrounded her car very late at night at night while she was alone, he wouldn’t be so jovial about it.

This was a gimmick event from the NHL for Matthews, McDavid and Marner to finally win “something.“
This is funny and I thought pretty much same before it happened. However the two games I watched between Canada and USA was the most entertaining hockey I've seen in awhile and definitely am happy they put on this event. I hope they punt the all star game circus and have something like this every year instead. Be nice to have more teams though.

He didn't have a bad game, but he seems to shy away when he gets tired and legs are burning. Just doesn't have that extra gear. Crazy talent no hustle

I don’t think Matthews played poorly yesterday, quite the opposite. He almost ended it in OT but Binnington made a miraculous save from point blank range.

Yes, he loses his coverage on McDavid for the OTGWG by incorrectly pressuring Marner. You would’ve thought he would know Marner’s tendencies to draw coverage and pass to the open guy being his teammate on the Leafs, but he simply lost focus and started puck watching.

The bigger problem is his lack of reaction to losing. He’s the opposite of a guy like MacKinnon who looks like his dog got shot when he loses a big game. I don’t think Matthews has the mentality to win at all costs. He certainly wants to win, but some other guys want it even more than him.

You can’t inspire your teammates if you cannot show the desire to do whatever it takes to win.

I know as a Leaf fan I will come off a bit biased here but through the early part of this tournament I thought both Marner and Matthews looked very pedestrian.

Both players brought it in the final game, Matthews had 2 assists, and created numerous chances in OT, solid defensively. Corrado actually broke down that last play and it was actually Fox with the defensive miscue here

Marner was one of the few players that was able to buy some space for Canada, MacKinnon was the other. It actually kind of reminded me of a much younger Patrick Kane playing for Team USA in those Vancouver Olympics.

I don't think Matthews is the reason they lost, it is unfortunate but he can hold his head high, he played a good game.

That's just my 2 cents.

He mooned a security guard in a gated community while with a few buddies and was probably hammered. Nobody died
Was Matthews 12 when he did this?

That’s a Toronto Sports Network review. Matthews cheated on the play. He steals the puck there and he can head up ice for glory. Bad idea. Cost his country.

For NHL and international, Auston Matthews has now lost all 7 matches he's played in where it's a do or die situation for both teams

2018 playoffs vs Boston (game 7)
2019 playoffs vs Boston (game 7)
2020 playoffs vs Columbus (game 5)
2021 playoffs vs Montreal (game 7)
2022 playoffs vs Tampa (game 7)
2024 playoffs vs Boston (game 7)
2025 four nations vs Canada (gold medal match)

He hasn't scored a goal in any of these 7 games either....it's becoming painfully obvious that Papi is the Harry Kane of the NHL
All the Leafs core players hadn't been any better until last night when Marner won.

If you break down Marner's tournament despite scoring the OT winner in game 1, he was invisible in 3 of the 4 games. The only game he was very noticeable was the final. Maybe he's finally starting to figure it out or maybe it was a fluke. Guess we will see in the playoffs in a few months.

Thought he was the best US fwd not named Brady last night. Is it simply bad luck none of those three go in last night? Somewhere along the line he has to propel his team to a no doubt deciding game win and not rely on a bounce

The math alone on that just doesn’t make sense.

Even a peewee house league player could have covered McDavid on that shot with Mitch Marner putting the puck on a golden platter for him right. Come on! Get real

As a Leafs fan and Matthews glazer, you just do not leave the front of the net. Not when it's Connor F****** McDavid in the slot.

Fox absolutely lost his guy but you stop the threat, Marner along the boards isn't the scoring threat in that situation. Plus as the C, the slot is his duty. It was an overall defensive breakdown, but regardless of Fox losing his man, you don't leave the front of the net to challenge a passer along the boards.

The entire purpose of defense in hockey is to stop the play from advancing. Sometimes it's by using the body to separate the man from the puck, sometimes it's positioning to cut off a passing lane, sometimes it's having a good stick to force passes to the outside/non-threatening areas. In that situation the play is, cover the slot, challenge McDavid for position and tie his stick up. Just make it difficult for him to receive the puck/shoot the puck.

Fox being out of position allowed Marner to have time to make a pass or a play. Matthews going out of position allowed McDavid to become an immediate high danger scoring threat.

I think Matthews had a very strong game overall, he was phenomenal the entire night IMO except that play. And unfortunately that play sealed the game. I'm sure he's going to learn from it, but you absolutely just cannot do that. It's just shitty because he had such a great game prior to that, but the error was so big it over shadows the 2 assists that even got the game to OT + the 2 dangerous scoring chances he had.
great post

whats your argument for placing Eichel or Barkov over Matthews? Eichel and Barkov arent even ppg in their career. when its all said and done Matthews will be higher on the all time list. stop being biased.

unless you think because they won a cup they are better. if so I guess Barkov and Eichel should place over McDavid and MacKinnon?
Eichel had 26 points when he led his team to a Stanley cup. Without him there is no cup in Vegas. I'd easily pick any of then over Auston "tummy ache" Matthews for a playoff run even if Matthews is theoretically a better player.

Didn't the Leafs win their playoff games when he was injured and then lost whene he was back?

Lol

Hey at least he knows how to raid Janet Reno's closet for the awards show fit.

Other than scoring the winning goal in their first game and assisting on Canada's last 2 goals ie. the tying and medal winning goal he was basically a bum?

Interesting...

Gee I sure hope he doesn't do the exact same thing in the playoffs, that would be horrible!
