For NHL and international, Auston Matthews has now lost all 7 matches he's played in where it's a do or die situation for both teams

2018 playoffs vs Boston (game 7)
2019 playoffs vs Boston (game 7)
2020 playoffs vs Columbus (game 5)
2021 playoffs vs Montreal (game 7)
2022 playoffs vs Tampa (game 7)
2024 playoffs vs Boston (game 7)
2025 four nations vs Canada (gold medal match)

He hasn't scored a goal in any of these 7 games either....it's becoming painfully obvious that Papi is the Harry Kane of the NHL

He’s obviously Charles Foster Kane.

But where do these threads come from? Every single year in the Spring there are multiple threads about how Matthews is not a big game player, and now after this best on best more of those threads pop up.

There's a pattern that Leafs fans refuse to see, you all want to shout "The haters, the haters, they just hate Matthews!" the reality is that there's a reason these threads pop up and it's that the narrative is true, when the chips are down Matthews folds. he has his entire career and Leafs fans refuse to see it.

Everyone that is saying Matthews was the best player on the ice last night is looking through papi colored glasses. Brady Tkachuk drove that team last night not Auston Matthews, and for the rest of the tournament leading up to the final, Matthews never recorded a single shot on net until that final game. That's inexcusable for the supposed best goal scorer in the world.

But he was injured right? is that excuse going to follow him for the rest of his career?

Marner .87 ppg in the playoffs, Matthews .87 ppg in the playoffs. Yet somehow Marner is the problem. It must Matthews Selke defense then right? good thing he was able to cover McDavid in overti....oh wait, nevermind.

Matthews apologists will continue to make excuses for him his entire career because he can score goals in the regular season, but his lack of heart when the games matter most is disgusting for a supposed superstar.

The point you choose to miss is pointing to that game and saying he isn't a big time player just makes you look like you didn't watch the game or are incapable of understanding what you are seeing besides goals (in which he was the primary assist for both).

There was no reason to re-open the discussion aside from having an axe to grind. Had Matthews won with the OT goal everyone wanted, instead we're talking in a "Marner is 0-7" thread. It was lose/lose as a Leaf. Someone had to lose.

Hockey is funny.

Matthews was one 90%-likelihood-goal (and a miraculous Binnington save) away from being the #1 hero of the Four Nations' championship game (with 1 OT goal and 2 assists on three USA goals)... and instead that 10% likelihood save was made and so Matthews is the biggest bum ever.

I love ripping on Matthews but this is a weak thread. He had a good tournament and 2 assists in the Championship game. He actually is pretty good defensively, OT notwithstanding.

You’d think that people who watch hockey would have at some point noticed the other 4 skaters on the ice and the other 13 in the bench.

Teams win or lose together, trying to make it about one player is juvenile.

Will Marner’s success at the Four Nations coupled with Matthews’ failure make for bad blood in the Leafs’ room?

Its a shame as save the obvious defensive lapse on the winning goal Matthews had an excellent game.

Two primary assists on the US goal, tilting the ice offensively and strong defensively (save one play).

It comes down to results though so criticism is warranted. The difference between being a good player is results driven- it’s the fine line of losing vs winning, generating a shot vs scoring.

Personally I think it was more so the last 10 years and also him being directly responsible for the winning goal

He did captain his gang of thugs on a successful run traumatizing and sexually harassing a black woman in Scottsdale.

It's not like he totally lacks leadership skills.

I have been saying this for a long time about the outcomes of big games. Luck is a very big factor and as you said, it could have easily been the Americans who won and today the entire Canadian team and management would be under scrutiny.

In saying this, there is the pressure of being a team captain/leader, and not all players are cut out for that role and that might be the case for Matthews.

He did have his chance to win it. I also remember he got robbed by price in game 6 OT which would have clinched that series. The team already played defeated before the drop of the puck in game 7 though.

I'm not going to say he can't do more, but there is a certain element of simply being bested by the other goalie.

It's not surprising you are unaware.

Matthews himself failed to notify Leaf management at the time of his criminal misconduct and it wasn't until several months later that his misconduct became public knowledge.
He mooned a security guard in a gated community while with a few buddies and was probably hammered. Nobody died
