Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

Totally different comments than what Tanev said though. He left no doubt that he took total responsibility himself. Those other guys would never do that. Why even mention your teammates?

I think Matthews meant to include himself in the passengers comment, and I interpreted the way he said it as awkward and guilty a little bit without the maturity to actually own up to it.

Sometimes you hear him put on a bit of a Midwest accent like why is this guy talking like a character out of Fargo.

The passenger comments ive heard in the past are usually from coaches post game and when i have heard it from a player, they usually include themselves because they dont want to show arrogance excluding themselves. 34 as the C, didnt do that. With him admitting he was injured at locker clean out, he should have held himself accountable after game 7. Tanev showed leadership, accountability and a team mindset with how he addressed the passenger comments. At this point, no chance i would ever wear a 34 jersey.

I would say a 1 income $50-60k per family living in Clarington then Markham is POOR but you can define however you'd like
They both worked and the father admits himself he spent 20hr per week on hockey. Poor is living paycheck to paycheck, renting. Not living in an affluent area like Markham, spending half a work weeks worth of hours every week on hockey and Im sure they owned a house. They might not have been well off but poor they were not.

It was fine. He isn't Gary Roberts but he didn't sound awkward or anything.
I'm the last one to support Matthews but I agree from that 5 or 6 second clip there's nothing to cringe at. Nothing awkward between any of those guys in the clip. I'm actually a little bit surprised to see Auston actually trying to pump up the dressing room there. Didn't think he even had that much in him.

Auston Matthews has been a playoff disappointment so I would look at shopping him.

How about Leafs offer Matthews to the NYI in trade to keep Auston and Mitch together as Marner has been rumoured to long island?

Auston Matthews to NYI for Matty Barzal C ($9.15 mil ) + Noah Dobson Dman (RFA) + 1st (which is 1st overall)

Former #1 overall for a future #1OA.

The additions of Dobson and also future stud #1 Schaefer are a huge upgrade to the defense.

Would NYI's make this trade and would Leaf fans like this trade?

Leafs should jump on that like I would a Twinkie.

Then trade that first overall for a 1C because Barzal ain't it.

Yes Paul worked as a team trainer but it was usually his 407 fee and a little more but then again not every year .. it was a way to move team sponsorship money to him

Old man Marner admits it cost him $15,000 - $18,000 a year in this video here.

But yeah it wouldn't surprise me to find out Mitch got extra special privileges as a kid because his daddy pulled some strings.
It depends on da year but lets say minor midget year with Flyers where he was not trainer of team .. this is likely correct figure .. but what he does not disclose is what team gave him to switch from Kings .. all GTHL teams get compensation back from OHL for right to draft players from their team .. because of supposed non profit rules teams must make their books so that there is no profit being made by da GTHL team however much of profit gets paid out in salary for doing org work like for instance booking ice for team or buying team jerseys .. so for a team books perspective it might show a Paul Marner cheque for ???? but what no one sees is cheque going other way for services rendered to org .. there was an investigation into this, including team gthl teams sell for millions (like JT), but it went nowhere .. and this is more than a Mitch thing fyi .. but kids/folks who have 1st round ohl potential all get recruited and every year there are many deals in place .. even occurs in ohl with white envelopes with cash given to kids .. all kids gets da weekly stipend but sometimes more cash shows up in da envelope my friend .. there are thousands of dirty little secrets out there in kids hockey

I work in a homeless shelter.

I'm immersed in real poverty every day. You're talking about a guy receiving thousands of dollars in illegal kickbacks so his kid can play hockey for free. I don't think we're operating on the same working definition of what constitutes poverty.

I'm pretty sure Marner wasn't too worried about where his next meal was coming from growing up.

Evan Bouchard being a defesemen has more points 73 than Auston Matthews 59 in playoffs in 4 less games

Thats 14 points differential
Let that sink in

It's not even about point totals with Matthews. It's can you bring a consistent playoff brand of hockey and actually look like you can tilt the ice, dominate every time you're out there and giving your team the best chance to win. Do you look like a superstar that is driven to win. And the answer is nope.

Doing all the low value grunt work and prematurely going into your Steve Yzerman transformation like a decade early doesn't earn that much respect.

He’s not really a captain. I don’t think he gets the role. Don’t remember which player or Leaf said that the Auston in the room is not the Auston we see in the public as fans in the media. But part of being captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs is you’re also captain of the fanbase to a degree. Pelley had it right to say they need to reconnect that relationship with fans.
And Matthews always referring to how they ignore the outside noise is a direct shot at the fan base. This speaks to how a loyal but somewhat noisy fan base that bleeds blue and spends millions to support their team is not just unappreciated by some of the players but is their perceived enemy. The entitlement is astonishing but I think some of these guys are just selfish. It would surprise me if they took the C away from him. They should though.

Gotcha .. da world we live in hockey by definition is only for da rich .. i totally get it .. i was fortunate to be able to put 2 boys through da system .. go oilers go

I could see this attitude coming back to haunt the Toronto Maple Leafs and it’s something the Keith Pelley regime will need to take a closer look at. At what point does all this passion turned to anger turn into widespread apathy. You can love the Leafs but still soft tune out the team. Those Maurice, Wilson, Carlyle era games, I didn’t watch them all the time. You don’t like the noise but won’t be a good thing when this quiets down.

Man lucky for Matthews and Marner they don't play in Boston or Montreal. They would have known what noise is.

They have been babied for too long. Noise.... Just so sick of everything with this guy
It's always something....

Bro you got outplayed by Philip Danault

There was a clip of Berube's, locker room speech, where he said something like, play for each other. I thought that may have been a shot at the fans.

If Marner sends some into fits for lack of preferred engagement, Barzal will make them miss Marner.

Maybe Horvat instead? Dobson and Schaefer?

Worth thinking about that’s for sure.

That’s taking it a bit too far. I think, actually I know for certain, he meant let’s play for each other, your brothers, families on the ice….make scarified for your line mates, take the hit….
If he actually said, let’s play for the fans esp little Tim in the stands…. then we know that’s fake.

I don't think the poster was trying to say marner lived in poverty. Or can you quote the poster saying that?

This started because someone mistakenly said that marner was rich and privileged which wasn't the case.

At what point does the anger turn into apathy? When I heard the comments by Matthews and Nylander on locker clean out day, that's when it happened for me. I don't know either of them, so I want to be careful about judging them based off of what I see on TV, but I find both of them so unlikable, I don't care what happens to the Leafs if they continue to build around them.

I'm not even angry anymore. In fact I wish I were. But I just don't care. I wish I did. But the era of the "core four" has drained every ounce of care out of me. For years I watched nearly every game, that won't be the case next year. It will be as you say, a "soft tune out" for me until major changes happen. I so dislike this current version of the Leafs that I can't bring myself to try anymore.
