Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

Doubt either of their families were "poor", more likely middle-class. There are no poor kids in hockey in the GTA.
Yeah I’m pretty sure they were upper middle class growing up.
But there certainly are poor kids playing hockey in the GTA, but they are quality players and teams or leagues cover most of the tab, if not all. You are sort of correct though there are no poor, average or even above average players playing hockey in the gta.

He was injured all season but then goes to play in 4 nations instead of resting the injury? And why would 4 nations even let in an injured player in the first place??

And then won't even disclose what the injury is

It all makes sense..... right?

It's totally the same injury as the playoffs last year , which means it is chronic not good.
I think it is a back injury .
The good thing is his contract is up in 3 yrs.
This time his greed worked against him.

When looking for trading partners I think LA might be the only place with a fashion district and a soft media like Toronto where Matthews might be willing to waive his no move.
Byfield and Clarke makes sense for both teams if Holland wants to make a splash and is willing to give up Byfield. Maybe they can take Rielly for something and a small cap dump.

I read somewhere that Mathews has streptococcus of the blow hole. It causes people not to shoot straight. Could be wrong though.

I'm all for player privacy, but once the NHL got into bed with the sportsbooks, it's insane to me that we haven't moved to a place of more transparency when it comes to player injuries - similar to other sports like the NFL.

People are now placing millions of dollars on outcomes of games and various events involving players, without any knowledge of how healthy a player is. It genuinely blows my mind.

One thing about being a captain. I just watched a Barkov documentary and he’s probably the most quiet captain in the league

You don’t need to be vocal to win. But when he does talk everyone listens

He leads by example. In the documentary the coach was saying he would be at the rink before anyone else at 6:30am working on face offs by himself. And it started to rub off on the team. Other guys were coming in early and it just created this culture

The less you say the less chance of saying something stupid like that passengers comment of Matthews.

Matty can be persuaded to go wherever Mitch decides. These guys chemistry works so well together during regular season, and they're best friends (which seems to matter more to their generation than professionalism). I'm sure Leaf management could broker this.

why does everyone want this loser who's lost 4 straight series to the same team in round 1? how do we improve? I thought that was the point? or are we just carrying pitchforks and out for blood?

Why did not one ask him to elaborate on the "passengers" remark on Monday? Or did I miss that?

They didn't. They also aren't asking why he didn't sit out during the season, or why he went to 4 Nations. They also didn't ask why the Cup Champs and 2-time finalists were "hungrier", or why the Leafs weren't "on the same page".

They say they wanted Matthews to defend the fans from his friend Tkachuk's comments, but I guess they forgot that Matthews cries about "the noise" and disrespects the fans every 2 weeks. Why would he defend the fans from comments that he agrees with?

So, a yr aho AM was just cured, and that was my heart of the reason why he didn't perform in playoffs. No one would say what injury. He went thru off season, no surgery, no explanation, then hurt again, no confirmation, no diagnosis just a secret trip to Germany, played poorly, admits to injury, but no details and now just another secret off season, no surgery no explanation.
Captain Secret is out of line with leadership responsibility.

You blaming him ? The guy is just starting to break out. Damn you are a tough critic when it comes to Tkachuk, McDavid, and Draisaitl but you are a pushover when it comes to the 3 amigos. You aren't Shanny by any chance.

he's 23 and starting to breakout.

I'm being fair on losers including our 3 losers and im tough on p***yes who bolt from the spotlight like Tkachuk.

Love me some Patrick Kane though.

Anyways losing 4 straight times in round 1 didnt get the leafs guys any grace when they were "breaking out" why we going to do that for a guy who will never be as good as the guy your trading away and is now also establishing the track record of being a loser. how does this trade make us better? instead of straw manning answer that question.

San Jose sure has some great young talent.
