It's not one quote. It's minimum 5 years of loser behavior. Nobody is coming to rip the posters off your wall, but not all of us are 12 year old fanboys.
The funny thing is theyre wrong. I outlined why in a post the other day. But basically this fan base has worshiped the ground Matthews and Marner walked on for 9 years and only now are kind of turning on them. This is a hilariously easy fan base to please, where other cities would've run these players outta town years ago

Or how about these kinds of shitty leading questions:
"Your teammate Steve played great defence blocking a shot. Does it motivate you seeing that?"
Would be great if the guy said... "Sorry man, I actually didnt even see it".
Instead, you'll get a canned answer something like.... "Ya, Steve's block motivated all of us. What a great guy"
And then the reporter ends the session with a big smile on his face like he just asked the best question ever in pro sports as they go to commercial.

We should forget what he's done over the course of his career because... reasons. Life doesn't work that way. His one quote is the cherry on the Loser Sundae. Sorry, those of us that follow the Leafs actually pay attention and remember these things.
Right this idea of Matthews having to make it right is up to the players and how they felt about the comment. I understand the vitriol but this is just fans wanting their pound of flesh.

He's a great player but IMO, not a great captain.
For these international tournaments, I don't think it matters much who's captain. All the players are stars, they all know how to play, many are captains on their own teams, they just make the whoever is considered to be the best player the captain and that's the end of it.
Matthews is the best player, so he's the captain. It's always the biggest star on the team, it's never someone like Hyman.

My opinion is that it was easy to pick Matthews as captain because it really was quite meaningless over such a short stretch of time.
So more symbolic than functional, so give it to the "high profile / high award" player without really expecting it to amount to anything.

It's funny... Tkachuk and Brad Marchand were totally complimentary towards Leaf players, while, conversely, Captain Invisible Matthews attacks his own players with: "too many passengers".
So your opponents say nice things yet your own captain who you have gone to war with all season rips you. WTF is that?
And, anyone here who has played any team sport knows there is no recovering from what a captain has said like this (and in front of the entire world!).
