Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

If you want injured 69 goal scorer Matthews to leave you need to talk to someone lol

Turning on Matthews because Marner dragged him down (and he did) is foolish

Anyone blaming Matthews, report to the closest pond or lake or ocean and take a swim

blaming it just on marner is foolish too.
if Mats Sundin could get points with Jonas Hoglund in the playoffs, and Matthews is a hell of a lot more gifted than Sundin. what does that say about Matthews? but sure let's blame it all on Marner.

I think he would be staying if he didn't say what he said post game. I think that will anger everyone that matters, and all avenues will be explored.
He is utterly despicable. The level of arrogance and lack of accountability is utterly despicable.

Say what you will about Lead Feet Tavares, he never said anything like that as Captain.

I've never been a big fan of Matthews and hated the decision to give him the 'C' because he has never been the captain at any level he has played at.

But after his post-game comments last night I am coming to despise the guy. No decent captain throws his teammates under the bus like that. No decent captain lacks the self-awareness to understand that with his lack of production he, and his little buddy Mitchy, are the biggest passengers on the team. His comments also point to a division within the room, with prima donas like him and Mitch likely setting themselves apart from everyone else.

Yes, he has a NMC (after Kyle Dubious I think even Carlton the Bear has a NMC) but they need to move on from him. He is Casper the Playoff Ghost and is likely toxic in the room. He has to go. Hell, I am completely soured on Marner now too but would almost want to keep him over Captain America.

Come on Tre, break the internet this summer by trading Man-Purse Matthews.
!!!!!!!

Yes you're right but Marner was to Matthews the same as Holmberg was to Nylander. The lines Berube fixated on were not competitive in the same way they were before Maurices tweaks for game 3.

Matthews did also give me my new Passenger 67 custom title which I love.

Turning on Matthews is dangerous. Wellness checks available. Come on Leafs Nation. Get it together.

Must give AM benefit of the doubt now that he won't be taking care of a young child on his line.

They gave him the C because the best goal scorer on the team. And he's under contract so he'll be around for years.

The team knows JT and Marner will be gone soon and you cant give it to any gritty role players like any Adam Lowry second or third liner kind of player because the team constantly signs/drops those kinds of players every year trying to find those stop gap players for a budget salary.

Their only other alternatives would be Nylander or Rielly.

which is a dumb reason to name someone captain. because not even one year later the best goal scorer on the team is all like "well the whole team sucked, don't know what happened, blame the noise out there, i guess."

what a captain.

You know I'm one that thinks firing Babs was the nail in the coffin for this core.

MLSE let entitled brats call the shots instead of having them deal with some strict parenting

The results speak for themselves. It's such a colossal waste of so much talent. You can't undo what AM and Marner are now. I think we need to move on from both of them

My brilliant way out of all this horror:
Matty and Mitch are joined at the hip, as a super-duo able to read each others minds on the ice during the regular season and work magic, and as fast friends off the ice.
Ergo, it makes sense for Leaf management to work with them both right now to send Matty alongside Mitch to whatever team those two would agree to go to together. The return of assets to Leafs has to also be commensurate with the enormity of the other team receiving both M&M together in this trade.
Someone please forward this to Brad Treliving so he can begin to broker the deal. Thank you.

yeah well. Babcock was his own special kind of headcase.(not saying you're not wrong) but just saying.

all i know i've been screaming about everyone earning crap from day one. everyone was like omg daisy you can't do that. he's our #1 centre and he's this and that and whatever. well. congrats. here we are!

in an over-sensitive world...sure

To me..he's just a regular hardass hockey coach.

I have no issue with them getting rid of AM. If the return is good...take it all day.

This team needs an enema.

jury is out for me on matthews for me based on what his injuries end up being, but the personal accountibility 100% has to change for all these guys.

Doesn't it seem like he is always injured in the playoffs? It can't be the excuse every time

If he had lingering issues then he shouldn't have played at four nations
i agree about 4 nations, last year vs boston before he got hurt he was what we always hoped he would be in the post season, i think theres hope for him still personally, but im open to anything at this point. im ok if they all go but thats not gonna happen so im trying to be reasonable about changes.

Best goal scorer on the team? Who f**king cares? That does not make one captain material.

Better players than he will ever be were never captains - Bossy, Lafleur, Orr, etc.

There are ways around that.

They could have left it with Tavares this year.

And why do they need a captain? They could do it by committee until a real leader emerges, or when they sign McJesus in free agency.

He's basically a higher-tier Phil Kessel. Good piece for a team with an actual leader.

Another huge mistake was the players they chose to bring in as mentors - Marleau and Thornton, two guys who never won a damned thing in their careers. They didn't bring in winners, or even guys with grit and balls, they brought in two guys who were happy to sit in California and fail every year.

MLSE has a "woke" problem. However, you want to define that. They're more interested in virtue signaling than building a good hockey team.

The Dubas era made me want to puke. Remember when they did a press conference cause Reilz yelled 'Rag-it!'? LOL. Why would any old-school warrior-type player want to deal with an organization like that? I wouldn't.

The result is Marleau, Matthews and Marner playing house and the team dressing in Halloween costumes for insta.

I think we're moving on from it, though. Shanny being gone will be a good start.

I am going to say this.

I'm not going to poop on Marleau and Thornton for being loyal because we've pooped on people here for not being loyal. Also. Marleau and Thronton have won things in their careers. they couldn't get it done in San Jose. i don't think that's fair on them at all. (you can not like them - but i'm not going to deride what they have accomplished just because they haven't won a cup).
